FPV Reviews: The DroneKeeper Mini

The DroneKeeper Mini is such a simple idea, and yet it's brilliant. In it's simplest form, it's a beeper with it's own battery that starts to beep when there's no movement for more than 30 seconds.
You can get them from NicheTek here - www.nichemall.net/index.php?ro...
I took it out for an in-depth test - I didn't have any lipo situation where the lipo ejected this time, but I dumped the quad down in long grass that would have been very challenging to find without any alarm system.
It's easy to stick on a lipo, so I'll be using these as another level of protection against losing my models. I think they'll also come in very hand with the small planes I tend to fly

Brilliant! Liked the demo, didn't mind the wind noise, wasn't too long. Nice job! Interesting that the company is backordered and doesn't currently accept orders. I actually like that; most companies are happy to take the customer's money even if they cannot deliver. Nice find.

Need one of these .Really needed one 2 weeks ago.Just bought a new Hubsan 501,to replace a $60 quad that flew away.Never dreamed I would spend that kinda money on a drone,so $25 seems like a cheap insurance plan.By the way,I was reading alot of the comments here,you do an excellent job of replying.Keep up the great videos.

7demo7 Hey look so it is lol... I also first saw this on your channel back with the old version. I also have a review of this and yes it's great! Hopefully they'll come out with one that can work with higher voltage so it can handle voltage spikes on 4S.

Great review mate, I was just looking at that gadget yesterday and was happy to see you reviewing it today! Deffo gonna get one as sods law says when your quad crashes far away, the battery flies out.

It makes sense to use your controller and iPad or iPhone to get in the vicinity of your drone and then precisely locate it with a loud audio signal. Thanks for demonstrating this. The field test was important because sound can echo, bounce and deflect so especially in an overgrown field like your location you demonstrated how difficult it can still be.

I would say this is a must for us LOS fliers, purely for the fact that an onboard beeper will die as the lipo dies. Wish I had one attached to my Graphene a month ago, quad was found but poor battery was never to be seen again despite 2 long hour searches. Great stuff CK
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
I always figured LOS guys had much more of a head start finding stuff, but given a big model can be seen in the air easily 500m away, and won't necessarily crash straight down - I can see your point

Hi, one? say the quad is hovering mid-air in GPS mode for example and the beeper starts to sound, then say I move the quad from the static position into a moving position will the beeper turn off, or do you have to manually turn it off by the switch, hope this makes sense?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
As soon as the beeper starts going, then it must be manually switched off. In the case of a (very still) hover you could change the motion sensor trigger from 30 seconds to 1/5/8/10 minutes

After seeing the ones you had on Sunday decided to order one. Especially after my buzzer was packing up (now making a mouse like squeak) after a crash or 2. So a good backup. Love the idea of just moving to another quad. Loc8tor review?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Did some testing with the Loc8tor today, few more bits to do and then the video will be up. Some aspects of it a really good, and some not so good. So there's no one clear winner there... it's going to depend on the sort of places you fly. (some edits to come from Sundays flying as well... I just need more hours in the day)

I actually picked a couple of these up a while ago after I saw them mentioned on a YT vid. I haven't played with them much, so thanks for testing it out for me! :-). The reason I liked this so much is because I experienced a battery disconnect on a small quad. I had to review my DVR before I could find it. This will save your quad if your have a battery disconnect. Have you explored wiring it as a low battery voltage or as a beeper on a Tx switch?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
I looked at the instructions - so can do it, but the simplicity in it's default wireless form I think it it's best feature. I guess if I just had a single quad, then I might wire it into the battery, but as I will move this between a lot of models, it doesn't fit in as well. That said, I might do something else with one of them in some of my planes

How do you compare this with a gps tracker? Or is your drone too small?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
I view this Dronekeeper product as the ideal thing for a race-style small 200mm ish quad. Something you get in the air quickly and fly around trees and do silly things with. A GPS tracker is a bit big, and can take time to check it's got a valid signal etc. So that is more appropriate on something larger that you might fly further away

I once lost my hexacopter in a giant rape field and the only thing that helped me find it was the reception strength display on my graupner radio. Since then I have a GPS/GSM thingy on the big drone but will now get this dronekeeper for the tiny stuff, thanks. btw, the GPS/GSM thing costs about 25EUR, its very nice to have one.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Nice - over any larger distance (and as long as the lipo has stayed plugged in) I find using radio telemetry and a direction antenna on my goggles a great way of tracking something down. The GPS thing is great, but I feel overkill for the little things. A case of getting the right tools for the right models. I feel your pain, getting through a rapeseed crop is like swimming through treacle

@JohnFHendry

Very important subject especially with all the new fast micro brushless quads coming out. They just disappear. But this solution is not loud enough, not even close unless you are a dog. Many people's hearing can't even pickup the high frequencies. If you are going to use sound as a beacon it's better to have a short high energy lower frequency ringing burst of sound produced every couple minutes rather than a constant high frequency beeping draining the battery. My 47 gram UMX Radian ended up over a half mile away once and the VTX lead me right to it with guessing where it likely flew to so a signal to measure is much better for finding RC aircraft. I can't hear the beeper used in a Tarot 130 if it lands upright with the beeper facing down into grass standing 3 ft away upwind. Flip it over and it's not that much better and add wind or city sound and your noise floor hides it and you need to get on your hands and knees to find it in the grass where 8 ft is the max hearing range of the beeper when downwind to it. Wings certainly have their advantages....

Can the 30 seconds time be adjusted as that is too soon and would get sick of it going off on the flight line
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Brian Slator Yes. According to the site the firmware should allow you to configure between 30 secs, 1 min, 5 mins, 8 mins or 10 mins. I should have one with this newer firmware so I'll try and get 5 mins tomorrow just to double check that's the case
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Just tested it by changing to 5 mins - works well. You need this little tool they sell for $0.60, or you can make one from an old servo lead - but it's easy to change the settings using it

I'd be interested if you could set it to go off after say 15mins of inactivity - at the point when I'd actually properly lost my racing drone - not when just waiting for race to finish for instance.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
You can change between 30 seconds (the default), 1 minute, 5 minutes, 8 minutes or 10 minutes. It requires a little tool (they sell them for $0.60, or you can make one from an old servo lead) that connects to the signal pin and ground pin and then you tap another pad which changes the settings. I just changed my timer to 5 minutes and it all works as expected. Take a look at this PDF for instructions - www.nichemall.net/downloads/DroneKeeper_Mini_User_Timer_Setting_FW2.0.pdf If you are finishing more than 10 minutes ahead of a regular race - then it must have pitstops for new lipos or something :)

Hey there, new sub here and brand new to the hobby. Just in the "research phase" as I've not bought anything towards it yet. This product seems like a good thing to buy before I build my first drone I see. Anyhoo, You have a great voice! What region of the UK is that accent? You almost sound like Alan Watts to me, who is a great inspiration to me. haha Keep it up brother!
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Yes, unless you are going to go on the micro end of things (say, less than 180mm size) in which case it may become a bit large for the frame, I do think it's very useful on any quad - and I put this on all my flights now. I don't think I could assign my accent to a particular place, I'd describe it as a "southern english", although I was born in the north, so up until the age of 5 it was very different (or so I'm told at least)

Just a comment, a lipo voltage alarm does a very similar thing to the dronekeeper mini because if you crash and cannot find your drone it will start to beep when one of the cell is below the set voltage. This is how I found one of my drones. The voltage alarm also shows you the voltage of the battery and will beep when the battery is low.(lipo voltage alarms normally cost 2 bucks on ebay) Hope this is helpful.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Yes, and it's not bad as a last resort (as they are so cheap) The problem in this idea is that you can't really predict how long it'll take before your voltage drops low enough for it to start sounding... or if it'll stay plugged in the lipo
@neilvantonder661
@neilvantonder661 7 лет назад
Isn't the chance of the voltage alarm unplugging and the dronekeeper unplugging the same.Also the voltage alarms have two buzzers compared to the dronekeeper's one buzzer(meaning its louder).And if you crash your drone by the time you get to the area where your drone crashed the battery will probably be low already, if not just have a little sit and listen for the beeps.
@RCFlyer85
@RCFlyer85 7 лет назад
Just a heads up to everyone flying mini quads running 4S lipos these things can't handle voltage spikes so if you guys are running high power 4S build or anything above you will most likely smoke them if you have it connected to your lipo so for anything 4S and up I would suggest running it in Wireless mode only just don't forget to charge it up every now and then
@P44man
@P44man 7 лет назад
I wonder if it would work, if you had crashed it in a tree, or if the breeze would keep the branches and thus quad, moving too frequently to trigger. Still, a pretty useful little device.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Yes - there's a power on alarm which you can set to 30/60/90 minutes, so even if motion continues it will start the alarm off. Nice to think they had thought of that one/

i lost my copter a few weeks ago, to not let it happen again im currently working on a 2x2cm pdb that sends a radio wave every 10 seconds which can be tracked in a circle of about 50m by a handheld radio w. directional antenna. Sounds awesome - let me know when you've got it ready. It doesn't sound to dissimilar to some of the 433 rx's that can send out an SOS tone that you can use directionally on a handheld radio - but a standalone solution would be cool

What about chrashing onto a tree in the woods? The wind may move it constantly with the branch it hangs on and prevent it from beeping than. So "low battery-trigger" seems a good idea to me. Pros: - No need of cellphone network (works where no phone works at all) - simple - lightweight - cheap, no contract needed. - robust Cons: You must be near to it. Not usable for long range flights (when you are not really knew the location) No way to find it using an electronic map only 1-2h beeping (so you have to find it by that time) I use a tractive-pet-finder www.tractive.com Pros: The battery lasts four days. it provides GPS-Data on a phone. Also I can make it beep (not so loud) by activating the beeper at my phone There is a map (at the phone or browser), where I can track it. If someone carries my drone away (find it) I can also track where he or she puts it than Cons: It's heavier (40g) It only works where cellphones work This is more expensive and I need a contract (causing more costs) The best would be a combination of the two I guess;)
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
This certainly isn't a "fix-all" situation. For me, this is your 200ish sized race-style quad. Something where you generally fly within 500m of yourself, but often put it in the situation where you are going to crash into trees/undergrowth etc. As far as the "what happens if it's in a tree branch in the wind". Aside from the motion sensor alarm, there's a power-on timer as well (selectable 30/60/90mins) so after you power on this long, it'll start beeping anyway. For long range flying, it's less useful... it depends on the circumstances. If you have GPS co-ords on you OSD, then you can get a decent last known position and go from there... but depending on what you have and what happened you could of course be miles away from where your last good know position was. GPS trackers are fine as long as they have a good GPS signal (not upside down) and cell coverage - not always great out in the back and beyond. There are low-frequency trackers that works over a long distance and you can use a directional yago style antenna for. Fixes the cell/gps issues, but price goes up again. If there is the perfect one-fits-all solution out there, then I haven't seen it yet :)

Two & a half hours does seem like a long battery life beeping, but it may take longer to find your drone if it is far away & you're not sure where it came down. Also if you fly near environmental noise it could take you much longer to find it while it is beeping. You may not even hear it until you are close, and walking close enough to actually hear it beep may never happen. Especially if there is other noises that are louder & overpower the beeping sound you may never get close enough to hear it. I think they should make a cheap tracker GPS device that you can track your drone with your phone. I know they make one but I think it is pricey. Worth it if you have an expensive drone.

The Dronekeeper mini, for me at least, is a great product for your race quad style model. Usually you are max 200-300m away, and often going through trees where you can crash into overgrown stuff and lose easily. There are more involved products that work as radio beacons, there are existing GPS trackers... but these are larger and require more effort to setup - so they need a larger model, where you'd install on it and leave it there. So it's really a case of what's best depending on the situation you fly in

well your right it is loud ,. i mounted on my dji phantom 3 std, or 4, worked like a charm, found my quad fast it works fine, but not so good for the dji mavic pro....I mounted it on the back of my dji mavic pro, turned it on and in flight my mavic pro started to slowly yaw? right and left and after a few minutes in flight it lost gps and went into atti mode and drifted with the wind ? odd? so I got it to land and took it off and the dji mavic pro flew like a champ. so I put it back on and the same thing happened again so be careful if you mount it to your mavic pro,, thanks for posting keep up the good work

Weird - wouldn't think it would give any noise on the frequency ranges that this would affect anything. I don't have the right sort of analyser to test this. I didn't really see this as a product for a phantom/mavic - more of a race-style quad where you are going to put them into the trees/ground a lot. I would hope if you phantom went down you'd have a good last GPS co-ordinate of where it happened, with a nice visual map of where it would be on your screen ?

if its up in a tree in windy conditions tho- it may never arm in movement sensor mode. a timer is all u need.finder - set it to 15 minutes. press a button to reset when u land. most ppl fly under 10 minutes, so if your if flight went to 15 mins, without resetting - more than likly there was a problem, and an alarm sounds.

Sounds like a nice idea but flawed in a major way because if it gets stuck in a tree it will never beep because wind will keep the tree swaying. I use a beeper I made, for £2 - mini lipo connected to a beeper which cost £1...same trick but beeps all teh time whilst im flying so acts as a nice warning to people that drone is not a toy ;-)
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
It's got a power on timer, so will beep after 30/60/90 minutes (selectable) whether it's moving or not. Nice you've got something that works for you, but if I had something that constantly beeps like that, I think I'd smash with it a rock after a few flights :D
@MatthewWilliamsFly
@MatthewWilliamsFly 7 лет назад
Hehe yes godo to know it also does the 30 min etc come on - thats the ideal feature. I do a lot of flying low level to film crop circles. there is always a immediate risk of downing into crop and it can take 1-2 hours to find a drone without a beeper. Some people have lost their drones forever in crop fields. So I prefer the constant beep thats always on because if it goes down I can get it back in minutes... personal tastes. Yes it irrirates the hell out of me for a few seconds before I take off - but when its way off its not even possible to hear it. ;-) Thanks for the video - well worth noting this device. I will pass the video on to droneuser magazine online if you are ok with that... as this is an essential device.
@timadams2594
@timadams2594 7 лет назад
I bought one of these, and one month latter the beeper went silent. I emailed them and they said that it was due to how I mounted it on the quad. HUM! Other beepers that are hard wired to the quad have not succumb to the same fate. I believe it is due to poor parts. I am going to solder a new beep on, but beware.

does it work underwater?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
I wouldn't have thought so, but I'll check back with the manufacturers, just to see if you could effectively treat one with rainX or something. Of course, sound travels very differently underwater, and so even if it worked - the sound isn't going to travel through the water and out into the air very well.
@ModitRC
@ModitRC 7 лет назад
The light would help underwater, and believe it or not the sound too.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
Doesn't work underwater (heard back from the NicheTek guys today) they also don't recommend trying to waterproof it, or putting it in something as the sound will muffle. If you are going to fly over water where you stand a chance of going in, there are these devices that self inflate when dropped into water (they are for boat owners to put their keys on, but have seen them used in RC as well)
@ModitRC

Soooo, what happens when it gets stuck in a tree that moves in the breeze?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 лет назад
This is now the most asked question. There's a power timer, so after 30/60/90 minutes (switchable) the beeper will go off anyway - whether it's moving or not

Aha! Great!.... I had heard, seen, ... about the drone keeper already... and unfortunately today I managed to loose my 5" Martian II on a field in long grass (and wasn't recording DVR... grrr), because the battery ejected. I actually ordered 4 now, since the price beats a complete build... and want to give some to friends too!!! Tomorrow morning, I'll go back to do a 2nd search, and still hope to find it :(

My drone keeper is half dead after tow days of flying, it was not shocked and well protected inside the kwad. In fact, it still work but at a quarter of the initial sound power. Seller said that the magnetic buzzer can dislocate inside with the deceleration when crashing. I thought It was disharged but it was not. I won't buy another.

Interesting story - thanks for posting. Did they offer you another one, or a refund ? The two I have had had a fair amount of crashing (I lent one to a friend who hasn't actually made a successful landing yet !) but still going fine. I'll keep my eye on them though

You could have someone else try finding it who didn't watch you "lose" it... Finding noises like that is easier with a tube to your ear to help directionalize the sound.

@CurryKitten

Some other people have mentioned that - I suppose it depends where you fly. In my experience, people have been very helpful, always keen to help return anything they find. It's one of the reasons I try and encourage people to put contact details on their stuff. Sure, you are going to get the odd person who thinks "finders keepers", the the majority seem to have good intentions

Agree, it's worth the price if you are able to locate even elements of the quad (assuming a bad crash). Probably only props cost less than this thing ... No FPV buddies nearby, but I'm just starting out. Plan to join an RC group soon.

Looks like a great system, but as you up the usable range like this, the complexity and price also shoot up. Looks to be a great system if you are flying medium to long range planes, but feels very much like overkill for your 200-size racing quad.
