At 45:16, Ross Douthat, I think the question is (as per Newman): how do we distinguish change that is "development" from change that is "corruption" ?

Fr Martin using the word "silenced" in describing the corrective tamping down of the promulgation of inherently heretical theology during the course of the pontificates of John Paul ll and Benedict is a clever choice of words. He is speaking to the world, a world awash in victimhood and the exhaultation of personal liberty over true liberty. He is very smooth. I understand how he appeals to some.

Absolutely loved this. Y’all need to do this again. Love both Fr. James and Ross Douthat.

Father Martin is being less then forthright here in his comments. To claim that he is merely trying to get people to think and discuss through the parabolic method is ridiculous. Think and discuss in the service of what? Martin obviously - from his many writings - has an agenda at least as thick as that of any of his peers. Also, where does he get this notion of the "primacy of conscience"? Conscience needs to be both formed and informed. If not, it can lead us far afield of the truth - as witnessed by some of his own beliefs.

Where? it's church teaching. I'm not a Fr. Martin fan but there is such thing as primacy of conscience

Wow 31 minutes in and Douthat sounds alot more honest and forthright than the priest. Also the way Martin characterizes his opponents is extremely condescending. Maybe we need to go back to more fisherman in the priesthood.

Two very intelligent and obviously faithful men trying to articulate what they think is Gospel truth, Catholic Church truth and theological truth. They are a lot smarter than I am, but I wish Fr. Malone had asked each of them if he thought his own thinking could possibly be wrong. If we really want to encourage civil debate of complex issues in the public square, it might help the conversation if we could first acknowledge the need for some humility about our ability to fathom all the things that God patiently reveals. As the discussion continued, I couldn't help but think that God was looking down shaking his/her head.

Pope John Paul and Benedict NEVER said you couldnt dissent from the Pope. This is a lie. Fr. Martin is a classical sophist. He is a rhetorician that says nothing...

Father Martin seems to focus WAY TOO MUCH on words and feelings. Whenever necessary, Jesus Himself would use harsh words (Hypocrites, Satan, etc) in order to correct people. Correcting someone who is in error by speaking CLEARLY is also a form of LOVE.

Fr. Martin has no problem with asserting the black and white issue that homosexuality is created by God. Fr. Martin, says one thing and then says the opposite.

Fr. Martin seems to apologise a lot for being pious: I think that's probably OK for a priest, isn't it?
