When i bought my kemper stage it was the only thing i was looking into when i switched from using a helix lt. I wanted a floor model format for simple gigging options, at home use and something that's easily transported. Number 1 priority was quality of sound and the FM3 was the only other option. With just a few buttons, less complex chains and 1amp/1cab only i immediately discarded that as an option. Having said that I just signed up to the FM9 waiting list for Europe. I love the axe edit, the 2 amp/2cab options and signal chain variety with high quality effects. With kemper i quickly realized i am never going to do profiles of my own so i was limited to purchasing 3rd party profiles with very little tweaking opportunity. In some sense you have to hunt for the tone that you hope you'll like based on overproduced youtube videos and you get stuck with having to scroll through a lot to find something that you like that matches your style, the music, the mix etc. Also the dedicated controls gain/mid/bass/treble etc do not translate into how the amp would behave when tweaking since those are set Q controls on the Kemper. Don't get me wrong the kemper sounds great despite it being 10 yrs old but in my case the sound is only as good as the profile i find. That means i have very few opportunities to be in control of the sound. That means blindly buying profiles.

Yeah but still it means it can expand in a limitless way. With other units you are limited to the amps they offer. For instance I have learnt that there is not much amp sims for Hughes & Kettner amps in Fractal or Helix units. But they have Kemper profiles.

It comes down to what you want and are going to use it for. I have an FM3 and love it. The single amp and cab model chain sounds great and the effects are awesome. Basically giving you a sound similar to you running a tube amp thru your cab with the effects you add on. A solid basic rig. But I am constantly running at the edge or out of processing power. Now everyone has what they like and use and I commonly don't use much. Compression and an overdrive pedal going into the amp into the cab with an enhancer, delay and reverb after the cab. And that creates tones I love. But pushing the delay and reverb up to higher resolution settings where they sound much better and really improve the overall tone, pushes the processor to it's limits. So,.. if you think you want more than that, buy an FM9 or AXE-FX III. Cause you won't be as limited.

Yep, you're right. I've always been a single guitar player from a trio to 5 band members. I had to make all guitar sounds for my bands for each songs: Acoustic, clean, crunch, Hi Gain, and multiple FXs and Amps for each song. For that reason, I need 9 or all 12 buttons. The 3 buttons will not work for me.😅

I gig with FM3 with FC12..... I'm in a cover band and I like to emulate the amp and cab of original song as much as possible, FC12 is too big, but I don't like kicking buttons above other buttons, the seamless amp transition and lower CPU value is worth the change to FM9 alone, I'm always fighting to keep CPU value down on FM3. I'm on the waiting list, for what It's worth it took me 10 months to get my FM3 last time I was on waiting list.

I sold my FM3 because I couldn't get along with the 3 switches. I bought a QC but quickly missed all the great effects Fractal has. I have been a Fractal user for over a decade now. The QC amps sounded good but lack so many fx bummed me out. I sold my QC and will be purchasing the new FM9. It's the perfect amount of foot switches and I get all the Fractal goodies.

Hi, thank you for sharing! I think it's an interesting discussion: may I ask why you didn't buy an FM3 + midi controller (a midi controller cheaper than the Fractal ones). I'm asking because I'm also undecided if it is better the FM3 + cheap midi controller (to have even more flexibility: if you want you bring with you the whole package or just the FM3 for more compactness) or the FM9, which is more expensive but offers an all in one solution. As regards QC FX, I do agree, so far they are limited...I hope they will close the gap with future firmware upgrade, as I really like the form factor. Thank you!
@user-on8rf1yf4g

Why not change to Axe FXlll + FC-12 ? FM9 is still very much limited by the capabilities of the processor twice that of Axe FXlll. When I began to constantly exceed the processor limit when drawing up presets, I firmly decided to change to Axe FXlll and FM9 will not lead me astray :)
@r.llynch4124
@r.llynch4124 3 года назад
@@LeoGibsonGtr FM3 plus midi would work ok but I think overall FM9 makes more sense if you have the extra cash. Some people don't have that extra cash so FM3 is cheaper to own. Might revisit the QC in a year or two. I too love the form factor of the QC. It's so easy to use as well and amp tones sound great. It's the future of modelers.

@@user-on8rf1yf4g I do have ax3 but only for recording use. Portability is an issue with it though. I need an all in one solution for the floor. FM3 is great for most people but I couldn't deal with the 3 switches for some reason. FM9 should workout perfect for me. QC is great if you don't need much fx. The QC fx quality is not there yet. Maybe in year or two?

I feel the same way- but better gear can actually help you to play better for many reasons- the tone and motivation to play. If you want some good instruction- check out zombieguitar and guitartricks. I joined both and really like them- and I've been playing a while. I can learn from anyone and each site offers unique info. All of this said, gear and effects are great but never rely on them to cover your tone. Be able to play unplugged with a metronome. Level 2- play the song twice, exactly the same! One of the best concerts I went to was Chris Cornell playing unplugged for 2 hours- just a chair, acoustic and a glass of water. His kind of talent is rare. Enjoy your FM3!

Hey I’ve been battling this dilemma forever - would appreciate some advice! So I am both lead guitarist and lead singer in the band (I also play flute and a bit of sax) so my choices are between this and a Helix Floor. Obviously this has more DSP and as a new model coming out vs an aged flagship model this *should* sound better, but does the Vocal functionality of the Helix make it a better choice as in all-in-one (considering I could use the Helix to add Vocal Delay+Reverb for a flute solo) or should I be focusing on buying a dedicated guitar processor for my guitar and then leaving VocalFX management on the mixer? (Can I route Fractal to control my mixer’s mic effects via foot pedal? Or can I use a tablet or iPhone to wirelessly control my mixer via bluetooth? That would mean I basically supersede the vocal benefits of the Helix. Would appreciate some input as someone who gigs ~200-250x a year and is new to modeling but not performing
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
Hi Olivier, personally, if I had to sing and play I would probably buy two different processors, as I would also like to have pitch correction like you have in the TC hellion. Alternatively I would go with a unit that offers also a mic preamp, and as far as I know, the mic preamp is available int he Quad Cortex, the Helix Floor or the Fractal FX III Thank you for your question!

Ottimo video, bravo Leo, come sempre!

@LeoGibsonGtr 3 года назад
Hi Maurizio, interesting...but I don't know...maybe something in the 500€/$ could be very cool, in order to compete with POD GO, MG 30, HR MX5, etc... but I'm not sure that this would be imply such a big limitation of the DSP power that their algorithms could not even run...or a severe compromise in quality that I don't think Fractal is incline to do. Another point is that a cheaper unit would imply higher sales volumes...and this imply (I think) a change in Fractal distribution policy... Obviously if someone knows, please drop us a message. Thank you!

@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
Hi, first of all thank you!!! This is a difference between the FM3 and FM9 that I didn't mention in the video... I would answer reporting what Fractal is saying: > "Some old stomp boxes, i.e. Univibe, fuzzes, etc. have a low input impedance. This low input impedance will load down a guitar's pickups and change the frequency response of the pickups.[...] if you want to exactly model one of these old stomp boxes you need to replicate the impedance loading" > "Variable input impedance is a nice feature if you want accuracy but it's not that big of a deal and certainly doesn't make one device better than another. Personally I prefer the sound with it turned off." Personally I agree with what Fractal is writing. Thank you once more for pointing out this difference!

Hi, the FM3 says for desk use? Does it work well for live use? How many patches or sound options can you have for one bank, 3? So for example, you could have clean, rhythm and lead patches on a bank but that is the max? Nice thing about FM9 is having extra patches per song.

Nice. Thank you Leo! I just have a concern regarding the tone quality, does the tone quality in FM3 is identical to the tone quality in Axe-Fx3? you mentioned that the tone is the same in both FM3 and FM9 does this mean the tone in FM3 and FM9 is less quality comparing to Axe-Fx3 due to the "type of processors" in Axe-Fx3 "which is Texas Instruments" is different than the one in FM3 & FM9? The FM9 and AxeFXIII can produce patches that sound noticeably more complex (arguably better) than what the FM3 is able to do. Although it's true that the individual effects may be the same, the FM3 for example, cannot run dual amps and high-res. reverbs and h-res. delays at the same time- not even dual amps alone. If you don't need those things, the FM3 will still sound GREAT, but no, not the same. It's like having the same car but then you put a weaker engine in it. It will still look good, and the car has many of the same features, but it is not the same. You are also comparing an $1,100 (FM3) product to one that costs about $2,500 (AFxIII) if you include the footswitches...so it's not apples to apples.
@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT 2 года назад
@@mikezimmerman5633 Not exactly. You can't process nearly as much signal info. on the FM3 so in many cases it simply cannot sound the same. Individual tones probably- but not all playing together. Many complex patches on the FM9 or AxeFXIII will absolutely not fully carry over to the FM3 e.g,. dual amps, multiple hi-res. effects. The exception is if your patches are mostly simple with a low cpu load. Anything that is over 50% on the FM9 simply won't play fully on the FM3. Now between the FM9 and the AXEFXIII- you could port over nearly everything at 100%. If you need a patch that exceeds the CPU of the FM9 you have other issues. Rock legends didn't have any of this technology- just skill and really big amps (and hair!) Cheers!

I own an HX Stomp, and it allows for multiple Amps, Cabs, Distortions, etc. Like you, I don't run very complex signal chains. The Fractal units are built like tanks, so that could be an important criteria for a world travelling musician. Rather pricey units. I don't have any plans to upgrade what I'm currently using. It seems to me that we are at a point where modern Modelers sound similar and have similar features, particularly in the hands of an experienced user. Our senses are biologically limited, so there's a point beyond which higher fidelity audio specs become meaningless, unless one is reducing audio track speeds for some special processing effects. I think makers of Modelers should focus on what makes these units more user friendly, easier and faster to dial in, and more versatile. I'm always looking at how I can get more and better results out of less gear. Thanks

Hi Leo, What would you recommend for the best modeling pedal for direct recording guitar solos (overdrive and distortion sounds) into a DAW. Recording a miked amp sometimes can be a challenge with room acoustics, mike placement, etc, so I am looking for a really good way to get a great guitar solo sound direct. Hi Philip, well, it's hard to give you a definitive answer. All the modellers has pro and cons, according to your needs, and the absolute perfect one for every body does not exit (in my opinion). For recording at home you have a lot of very good options, like the NUX MG 30, the Ampero Stomp II, BOSS GT 1000 core, HX Stomp, Fractal FM3, Quad Cortex....it really comes down to your budget and your personal preferences. Of course the FM3 is a very good and solid option. Thank you for your message and sorry if I can not give you the "definitive" answer.

What would be an example of a way to utilize having more than one set of stereo outputs? If you have an FRFR speaker, couldn't you just connect your modeler to that, and then take the output on the FRFR to the mains if you are playing live? What situation would call for more than one output on the modeler itself, like the multiple outputs the FM9 has that the FM3 lacks?
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
Hi Alec, one example could be that you send the sound with the amp and cab simulation to the mixing desk and the sound without the cab sim to a power amp and cabinet. Thank you for your question.

Thanks Leo for the short info video. I wrote you yesterday or a few days ago when reviewing Headrush that I actually wanted to order the FM3. Was scared yesterday that there will be an FM9. However, the price is too high for me. I wanted a small form factor and the FM3 has that, single chain is enough for me. What I like about the big brother, however, are the more USB options "in_USB" and USB 5 + 6 for routing to the Out2. Maybe something will come with a firmware update if that is technically possible. You said expand FM3 with a footswitch, can you recommend one to me? The Fraktal footswitch is too expensive at 600 €, what is a cheap alternative to switch effects? Ease of use would be good Thanks and regards

Hi Christian, yes, I remember your message and actually I start researching for FM9 info thanks to that message...as I always say...your messages are super important for me! Thank you also for sharing your opinion and experience! As regards the midi pedalboard I use the Boss ES8, as it provides me the possibility to integrate a full analog chain and can be used as a switcher even for pedals. If you need no more than 4 footswitches, you can go with something like the Ampero Control (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7bPGg7vTP5w.html). Another interesting option is the Melo audio midi commander that can serve also as audio interface (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-naTeXd5boA4.html) or you can go with something like the Behringer FCB1010. I have never tried it, but I think it can do the job. Thank you once more!
