Well that's another one added to my read list, thanks Thomas. Looking forward to getting started on the Fractalverse series soon. If you have read it, would be interested in your thoughts on Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. Another sci-fi book with what I thought was a pretty interesting and unique first contact situation and the steps taken to resolve it.

Sure thing! Glad to give you another recommendation! 😁 I haven't read Project Hail Mary but I own The Martian and do want to get around to Weir's books at some point.

@@thomaswrites They are stand alone so far but think you will enjoy Artemis as well. Fun look at a not to distant future, with some interesting characters. Felt Weir was trying to show Heinlein some respect when writing it. Got a real Podkayne of Mars vibe when I was reading Artemis. Not to add to your work or reading load, but have you ever read any Spider Robinson?

@@thomaswrites Update: Finished Fractal Noise and really enjoyed it. Excellent characters, interesting plot, and decent ending even if left a little open. Would not mind a sequel to this book! Reading his To Sleep in a Sea of Stars now! Also came across a documentary on Harlan Ellison I had not seen before called Dreams with Sharp Teeth. If you have not watched it yourself. Highly recommend it, great insight into what a brilliant madman and writer he was! Sometimes think John Scalzi might be Ellison's illegitimate son, or maybe a cloning experiment that did not fully work!😂

@doberski6855 nice! Glad you enjoyed it and hope you enjoy To Sleep! That also sounds like an interesting documentary I'll have to check out!

Familiar with Paolini of course, but unaware of this series. Will add it to my TBR list. Thanks for an informational review.

Should I read a sleep in a sea of endless stars first, or fractal noise?

Honestly, I don't think it matters to much in either case. Fractal Noise sets up a lot of stuff about the world but the characters and plot are completely disconnected from To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. I personally read To Sleep first and then Fractal Noise but I think either way works.

Id highly recommend reading to sleep in a sea of stars first. After read that book, fractal noise just felt heavier. And i do agree that this book is his best work. It left me thinking of what happened after the ending. Such a great series

Did Alex Crichton get his name after Michael Crichton? .. I wonder.

Wondered the same thing when I first read the book. Wouldn't surprise me if that's an intended connection.

Why does no one mention the fridging of Alex's wife? 100% wife in the fridge and no one is talking about how cheap that is. It may be "realistic" but in writing it's incredibly weak as a basis for character development. That on top of the super weak lacking in payoff narrative ruins this book for me. Expected way more from Paolini.

I understand your criticisms. Personally, I was OK with Alex's wife being dead because it ties into the conclusion and themes of the book. I think the author also gives enough backstory scenes so that she feels like a character and not just a narrative device so I don't see it as fridging. I also did like the conclusion because it was more about the main character's arc and the purpose of the Great Beacon is ultimately irrelevant to the point of the story.

@@thomaswrites Fair enough, I think I'm just reacting poorly to the lackluster nature of most of these reviews, and i really hoped for more from Paolini but in the end I'm thankful for what he's doing for the fans. Also I have to admit that I didn't finish the books so I suppose I shouldn't be screaming about it online.

@@SirTallstone you're all good ! I think those criticisms are valid and well-articulated. I gave this book four stars because it was slow for me and I thought there could have been more happening plot-wise. I am interested to see what Paolini does next both in the Fractalverse as well as with his continuation of the Eragon universe.
