I have always been fascinated by fractals (by alsways, I mean like 10+ years) and I've wanted to make a fractal music for a very long time. This video is the gathering of different ideas I wanted to explore, to see how it would sound and how difficult it would be to compose a fractal tune.
That was a lot a fun and made me want to explore this a bit more and compose "real tracks" using a fractal structure. Time will tell, in the meantime, I hope you have a fun time watching this.
Thanks for passing by.

Wow, that is so amazing! The second version I like the most. And I can't quite describe the feeling of it. What the whole thing maybe is lacking is a little soul in my opinion. It sounds very robotic. But it's very difficult to make a concept like this come alive, I'd have no idea how to approach it. I think the beauty of fractals comes especially to live when they are a little more vibrant and complex. I also believe what Bach was doing with his songs was kind of going in this direction. It was very mathematical and flirted with the idea of repetition of a theme in a bigger picture. Maybe it'd be most interesting if one cannot see the mathematical side of it at all at the first listen.

The same melody faster and slower is a common part of fugue subjects. And the first 4 notes of the example melody are the same as that of The Art of Fugue (by Bach), not to mention at 7:20 it sounds bit like a clavichord lol! A vague suggestion: fractal patterns seem like it would suit granular synthesis so maybe modify a max4live device? Nice vid, thnx!

I thought about writing some sort of fractal piece for some time. The only idea I would have to make this even more musically Interresing would be to write a longer more complex base melody beeing able to give the feel of chord changes over time with added iterations.

Hi there :) thanks for your valuable contribution towards real fractal music. This video has inspired me, truly. Not sure if you'll see this after 2 years, but I have an idea for you. I've been exploring this concept: 1) input a chord into a feedback loop in ableton (via return track, that is routed back to the input) use for example an e-piano for chord input 2) add a soft clipper in the loop (venn audio freeclip for example) 3) add resonant filter peaks that can be moved by hand or automated to the loop (depends on taste) 4) add a gate for the excitation shape in the loop (gatekeeper for example) 5) add a resonator in the loop for tonal control (xynth audio rezonator for example), feed it with the chord notes that are played 6) add spectral dynamics control 7) add delays within the feedback loop 8) route this loop to an output track 8) add the same gating to the output track 9) add reverb on output track (just a little, blackhole immersive is epic for this) Optional: - add sausagefattener in loop for extra grit - add harmonic enhancer in the feedback loop You can play around with the excitation level amount using the resonant filter peaks within the loop. You require feedback protection and the spectral dynamics control is not that easy to get right. If you see this, send me a pm in soundcloud and I can share more detail. It should be a dynamic recursive feedback loop with selfsimilar elements due to longer delaytimes within the loop, that actually plays chords and can thus be very versatile. Should at least be partially fractal, at least that's what can be heard, I feel Here is a sample: on.soundcloud.com/PrZHhXd9aL1Qbf577 (using very sharp gates from gatekeeper to hear the effect of transients) I believe an advanced version of such 'dynamic timbral fractals' is being used by Felix Greenless (Hypnagog, Terrafractyl). Listen to this first example: on.soundcloud.com/YWQKAYp4yr4fbVEc8

;) With your video you've inspired me to put effects into live feedback loops. As a thank you I'll share with you and your community an easy starting point. If you'd make a video about it, I'd be delighted to see it 😊. Return track: (part of the feedback loop) Xynth Audio Rezonator. Then add gulfoss live in the loop and shinechilla in parallel. Excite shinechilla rhythmically with spline EQ. Maybe add other effects here Delay the return track to taste. Route the output of the return track to the audio track -> Audio track: (part of the feedback loop) First: sausagefattener (or leave it be, for other spectral dynamics). Second: freeclip (oversampling influences achievable harmonics by increasing latency when using smaller chains in more advanced loops) Third: Kilohearts snapheap with disperser set to 6kHz with or without keytracking use envelope follower to modulate amount & pinch for that liquid effect Fourth: an EQ for excitation manipulation (attenuate /-10 db !!!!!!) Fifth: Gatekeeper Then send to the return track (feedback is scary, start with super low levels!! I really cannot stress this point enough 😅😅. Route to sends only Audio track: -> Input from last audio track. This is the output track. Add the feedback protection rack (see below). Add the same gatekeeper (I've modified the 'plinkton' preset) and a reverb and you're all set! Important for feedback protection: drive.google.com/file/d/1RszN0rS4ye_5_UArsSmOg22122hkVTlg/view?usp=sharing Add it to the output audio track. You'll want to try to adjust the parameters of first gullfoss soloed and then after activate rezonator and increase the wet signal. After that, activate shinechilla. You can make knob- or mouse-gestures with resonant eq shapes in the feedback audio track (the first one). You can even let the longer feedback loop described above branch out from a shorter one that are tuned to the tonic or other notes within the scale. Higher notes will max your CPU quickly, because lower buffer sizes are required. Other than that, the sky is the limit! I wanna see AI try and fail at recreating humans playing timbral fractals in a live setup. I highly doubt it will ever beat a human feeling-wise. Let the fractal revolution begin

This is so great ! I really want to try to achieve something like this. I was thinking about using a vsti patch with a big "complexity" macro. I would start with a pure sine wave for the lowest fractal layer, then the automated macro would add harmonics (by doing some FM synthesis for example) and other crazy stuff while raising in fractal depth :)

I just came across this video because I was thinking about trying out something similar myself. I really enjoyed watching your process and how you put it all together. I do have a recommendation for your transitions. you jump from the fractal melody directly into the next fracton music, I think it would be interesting to hear those melodies speed up and wind up into the tones that make up the same or a similar but different melody. You could also layer the same or other melodies at slower speeds to balance the sounds when they speed up into a monotone. I was thinking about making a song(s) or a set using tones that turn into looped melodies or songs/clips when they are slowed down, so the transitions would be the current melody speeding up into a tone that incorporates its self into the new melody that is a tone from the old melody that has been slowed down. and this concept could be really fun to play around with on a live recording were you can speed up and slow down multiple melodies at the same time in different octaves. However, I am a complete novice when it come to the practicality of sound design, and using daws, creating programs and other tools. So if any of these ideas sound interesting or give you inspirations, I would be happy to hear anything you might make out of it. And I would love to talk more about it because i have countless ideas for music, songs and sound design, I just haven't made time for myself to learn the necessary tools yet.
@Woochia
@Woochia 11 месяцев назад
I originally wanted to keep the part where everything speed up progressively until it becomes a tone. But there was 2 things that bothered me : - the transition was very long. It took a long time to really hear things speed up progressively, even if that was speeding up pretty fast - this part was chaotic and not very musical. So in the middle of a song to make a big break, why not, but for a musical example like this, I didn't want it to be mostly unmusical noise :/ The last issue is that I ran into the limitations of my software. You can't speed up a sound as much as I wanted, so I had to use tricks. All in all I decided to shorten this part as it was already enough to get the idea across. From there, anyone can do their own experimentation with these concepts ^^

Let's do it together, I'm right now looking for somebody to code a plugin that can do video/image resynthesis in a circle shaped area, so the line, that is collecting brightness and color information moves like the hand of a clock. So basically my take on it is doing image resynthesis on fractal zooms. I think this will serve you with loads of content for rhythmic risers, through a simple tweak and record workflow.

I believe it can be simply understood from a basic conceptual level, but in fact, constructing fractal concepts in the music field is not so straightforward. For example, consider establishing a basic rhythmic pattern consisting of two sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. For this, I use '1' to represent a note and '0' to represent a rest. Numbers close together represent the duration of two sixteenth notes, and a separate number represents the duration of an eighth note. Parentheses indicate the unit of time for this rhythmic pattern. Examples include: (11 1), (1 11), (1 10), (00 1), (01 0), (0), etc. With connections and increases in duration, the rhythm becomes increasingly complex. Adding dimensions such as pitch and dynamics, it becomes extremely complex. I think the difficulty lies in how to use fractal concepts to control the overall structure, or rather, to find a natural logical thread after combining various pitches, rhythms, and dynamics. It's like 3D drawing; how can I be sure that a hill constructed from many triangles is the closest to natural?

Did Bach apply this principle to his compositions of FUGUE - it seems similar.
@Woochia
@Woochia 2 месяца назад
It has some similarities :) though, even if some fractal patterns can be found in Bach's music, the principle of a fugue is different. In a fugue, the melody is played by a voice and is then repeated by another voice, then it's repeated by another voice, etc... While this happens, other voices play one or several other counter-melodies. It is not really the same melody sped up or slowed down.
