This guy wants to compare D&D to classic war-games as if he's making some kind of point, but the whole thing that makes D&D distinct from those old games is that the figures on the board are more than just faceless soldiers who exist only to kill and die. They're characters. The fact that D&D offers such a wide range of backgrounds, racial heritages, and professions is exactly what makes it, ideologically, a celebration of diversity at its core. This guy is literally mad over one of the foundational pillars of a game he claims to love, because he lacks the imagination to actually play it.

As a white, human male, I don't think I've EVER cared to play a regular human man in a DnD game. I always want to play some kind of weird bullshit, like a Warforged Rogue, Tiefling Bard or a Minotaur Paladin or some other sort of crazy fantasy shit. I think the most "normal" thing I've ever played was a Dwarf Cleric. There are so many possible choices in a game like this, that it would be foolish for the art in the books to not reflect the many, many, MANY different combinations a player (or DM) can engage in. Having that reflected in the art of the book the players will look through the most is perfect for inspiration. And it's not like anything's stopping you from just playing a doorkicker dungeon campaign with a human fighter and an elf wizard and all that "basic" shit. These dudes are so WEIRD. And they can't even say "go woke, go broke", because I'm pretty sure 5e has been their most financially successful edition ever, and has been successful in appealing to a more diverse array of players than it ever has been. And yes, the female orc paladin art he keeps putting up is cool as fuck. I've seen it in official materials a few times and it kicks ass. I'd want a card of her in Magic the Gathering.

@@TheGateShallStandTo an extent. It’s all about balance. Too much restriction, and of course you’re going to limit creativity. I worked with my DM to create a unique player character, and the restrictions helped. I made a Half-Dragon sorcerer, who uses the stats of the Dragonborn race, but instead is the product of a human woman and a male dragon (polymorph into human form) having a kid. I asked the DM if feathered dragons existed in their world, so I could give her feathers. I worked with the DM to make something that fits their lore, but was also fun for me. She started out looking mostly human, but was gradually gaining draconic features because of her unhoned polymorph abilities. The DM would throw in a wildcard like “your character wakes up the next morning with a tail!” We ended up creating something super interesting because of the restrictions, but also, some leeway on the DM’s end.

We all are going to have different perspectives and experiences with these things. And I would love to hear where ours diverge. I may be mistaken, but I do not believe my brother was one who ever wear a cut-off shirt, or would. I honestly do not know when precisely it became 'uncool', guessing early nineties(?), but by then I was out of school, and let's face it- after school a lot of what others think becomes a non-issue for you and vice versa, hehe. But even in media, Miami Vice? Nagel prints? HUGE. Even though most of my late teens and early twenties, I had mainly a black wardrobe, I can honestly say it was never an issue. Okay... I'm from the 90s, I've played since 96, I hate to stoop to this trope but... this guy is JUST closeted. He wants more men, he was lots and lots of overly designed men. And I can say this, because the first thing he made me think of is an artist named Anhes, he is a master of vaguely fantasy furry men with impressive design and coloring techniques. His stuff is just gay. Like, it is gay pinups for as far as the eye can see. When they're wearing clothes, it's gay pinups that could probably fit into a D&D books somewhere. I can literally only remember seeing him draw a woman in a full dress and at angles to give no real shapeliness. Or he would prefer a Jugg4 type, he also does explicitly fantasy art with musclegutted lion men who look properly sword and sorcery. It's also very gay, but he does do women on regular occasions. I am a bi furry and I game, this barely makes an impact. I don't care about all the boring human and humanesque images. I'm here for the anthros, and there aren't many of those. So really my only concern is that the mechanics are intuitive, streamlined, and functional, and that the game is properly balanced. I and others at the table will provide everything else. (Heh, I've been experimenting with making a Tabaxi cleric who is openly based on the style of Anhes, just so you have this muscular cat man in flowy robes giving blessings and mercy.)

The western style Orcs is probably just a regional thing, those are just the Orcs from Anarauch or something Orcs that live in more Celtic or Nordic styled regions of Faerun are probably more Tolkien-style And on what you said about not liking the word Orc - I agree! In The Elder Scrolls they’re called Orsimer, I like that term a lot more

Rightoids trying to stir up drama in TTRPGs is always so funny to me because over 90% of the content is player-created and optional, so they can't use the same arguments for TV shows, games, books and movies. It just becomes abundantly clear that they have an issue with minorities.

“I don’t have enough enough imagination to do what players who aren’t straight cis white dudes have been doing for decades and making making characters who are like what they want to see and aren’t pictured just liked myself. I can only imagine myself being exactly like what is the drawing, I can’t be a white guy fighter if the fighter isn’t a white guy”. What a clown.

This is at least a partial attempt at rage-baiting. I imagine some part of him does believe what he's saying, but a lot of this is so stupid that the idea that it's intentional is hard to swallow. Demonstrable and silly gate-keeping, all of it - subtract all of the fluff and explanation he offers, and what he's saying is "D&D was mostly us white males playing in the beginning and I don't like that it's changed." Who argues from such a limited, almost childish perspective? It's possible he's proud to be this...way, but he's also choosing his words carefully. He knows he's offending some people. And just hoping they reach out and say something, because then he can use that in another video and on and on and on. Just play the game your way, dude. JFC. Edit: I would be REALLY interested to see how he treats drow players or NPCs in his private campaigns. Now that I think about it, I've known one or two people who treated even friendly drow characters like crap while they're "in character." Now that I've made the connection.... yeah, I can see those guys being racist.

Anyone who's played D&D for any length of time knows this argument. It comes up every few years - I remember the exact same whining when 3E came out because it dared to have some non-white people in prominent positions, I for sure heard it about 4E just because the grognards hate that edition so much, and now this dude.

This guy’s definitely the type who’d say: “The only wizard that should be in DnD should be the one of the Ku Klux Klan variety.” I always find it hilarious that they have worlds with many kinds of fantasy races with subspecies and cultures, but draws the line at humans of different ethnicities and genders.

I love the "it has not turned out so well for disney", "Go woke go broke" and so on argument. The worth of Disney has increased from 165.25 bilion 2023 to 176.10 bilion 2024. That's an increase of almost 11 bilion dollars and the year is not over, how is that "not turning out so well" or "not working".

He keeps (incorrectly) claiming that d&d used to be one specific way but also fails to realize that the game is more popular than it’s ever been and that’s partially because of a RU-vid show composed half by women.
