Hello Sam, I enjoy hearing your thoughts on the change of heart about some of your fragrance collection. It shows a realistic view point about how taste or view point can change. Your thoughts about the reality of pricing being way out of line especially for packaging is very apt. Thanks for your video! 🌹💛~ Jenn
Since having only started collecting in the last year or so, I’ll let myself have a little more time with my perfume wardrobe before doing a similar declutter - but I’m definitely inspired to do so when the time is right! I’d also really like to see how you’d curate your collection down to 20, what process/methodology you’d adopt to do so.❤
I hover around the 20 bottles mark. Thank you for being so straight talking about the overly expensive brands and renormalising normal pricing. I categorically won't spend over £200. I won't even try them. I've found anyway that I really like the niche brands between £100 - £150 like Violet, L'Orchestre Parfum, Olfactive Studio, and you can get travels with them. Don't always want or need a huge bottle. Maison Matine is also a really cool brand I enjoy, the scents are simple but still interesting and the pricepoint is super fair at £55 for 50ml! Great video Sam 🌼
Those Serge Lutens colours freak me out too. I have La Fille de Berlin and I love it but I have to be careful with where I spray and what I wear. I think it's great to edit one's collection sometimes, even though my collection is under 30, there are still some perfumes that just don't get enough wear. I'm also becoming more open to decants. As much as I love having the bottles, a lot of things I love I just don't need 50 or 100 ml of.
I've been into fragrances, albeit in a signature scent way, since the age of... idk...9? But within the last 6yrs I've ramped up my once affinity for fragrances into an unreasoning obsession. All that to say: 200+ bottles later and I've found I'm over it. Don't get me wrong, I want to keep at least 60 of them (even though that's still pushing it) but the rest has to go. I just dread going thru the hassle of selling them. I hear of too many nightmare stories to be motivated to do so. But there's no other option outside of giving them away. Anyway, thanks for bringing up such a real topic. Hope to see you soon!
I love that you show unique fragrances that aren't mentioned as much. My nose is more sensitive than it used to be, so I decluttered most of my gourmands for softer, greener skin scents.
The oddest thing is the opposite has happened to me. I hated gourmands until this year. I have always preferred chypres and green based fragrances, then something happened recently that has drawn me to strong gourmands this winter. I don't tend to declutter simply because I know my tastes go through cycles and I'll find myself rediscovering old favorites. It's fun shopping your own collection.
I had an interesting experience with Lyric Woman by Amouage. Although I like the scent, I realised I only wanted a full bottle because of the bottle... After 2 decants I said no to that purchase but I was obsessed for a long time with this one. Now I am glas I did not buy it. But I still think the bottle is beautiful :) I still have Cuir de Russie in the EDP version and after 30ml of use I cannot wear it anymore. On my skin it becomes like "viande fumée" after a couple of hours, my most expensive perfume and I smell like meat. Great video as always, thank you!
I have the same problem with some fragrances that I bought at the beginning of my fragrance journey. Now they just smell ok to me and a bit boring. I think my taste changed a bit and boring is not OK anymore when I have other amazing fragrances in my collection 😄
I am downsizing and streamlining my fragrance wardrobe too! I think I’ve reached a good state now where I can comfortably look at each one in my inventory (I keep a list in my phone) and I can say what I truly love about each perfume. ❤
I am beyond shocked you are decluttering the Boadiceas! I remember the first video I watched of yours (I think the one with your sister guessing the prices) you were very much in love 😂
Btw Sam do you know if L’Erbario carries Hedera anymore? I’ve been dying to get my hands on that one but it seems impossible. At least here in the states.
Funny I actually got rid of the 2 BTV I owned and all of my Parfums de Marly including Oajan. I'm trying to just keep the ones I love with a goal of getting under that 100 mark. I keep missing it lol Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
I have a relatively small collection, and do not declutter that much really. The last bottle I got rid of was Bois des Iles, I have come to realise that I do not care for sandalwood, especially when it plays the main role. The vanilla perfume you mentioned, L etang Noir sound intriguing by the way!
Finally succumbed and ordered L’etang Noir today. Managed to track down a bottle of La Themis to, which is harder to find. Can’t wait to receive them. I’m preferring fragrance oils and attars right now rather than a spray. I just find it lasts longer and less irritating on my skin.
Cuir de Russie made me wince.. never tried the EDT but what a gem to let go of. I get it though!! Esp with the expensive/discontinued ones- release them into the world if you don’t wear them. I have had similar thoughts but will wait til I’m not pregnant to make better decisions 😅
Exactly - it would be selfish of me to keep! Definitely a good idea to wait until post-pregnancy. It's funny to see how your taste changes with hormones🌹Xo Sam
I felt this deeply! I have recently been realizing that I need to pare down to just the scents I actually reach for - to wear, that is, not just to sniff lovingly from the atomizer. I'm a minimalist at heart and I just can't take this clutter! I feel bad - I imagine saying to them, "You're beautiful and I still love you!" 😆 But, alas, it's time. Mine are Terra di Gioia (the only "de Gioia" that I enjoy) and Maison Louis Marie #4 Bois de Balincourt. I'm going to miss them though! 🥲
Like your approach. I have a fairly small collection (~20 bottles) but I have decided to sell some perfumes that I felt like I don't see the point of having them. I have found myself feeling guilty/overwhelmed when I bought some of those because I jumped on them too fast or bought the hype. Somehow, the feeling of have them there collecting dust is highly bothering for me.
I feel bothered too if I have too much or if I am not using things. I gave 2 bottles away recently that were affordable, but I was just annoyed having them and not reaching for them
I almost touched 50 last year and ended up finishing older bottles in my collection/selling/gifting some away and brought it back down under 20. I felt the same exact way, just having bottles looking back at me with dust that I couldn’t force myself to use 😂 felt guilty and very overwhelmed. Although I like a good amount of fragrances, there’s no need to actually obtain all if there’s no use for it. There are more important things we need an abundance of to feel secure and I personally just don’t see scented liquid as one. What I have does the job and more, then I can savor the experience and move on after finishing because I’ll actually be able to finish them lol
@@jaytibee definitely, you highlighted topic of getting things because they are great while not having use of them. I have decluttered Black Orchid because while I think it is incredible, I rather reach for different things when there is a time and place for it. Then, it is hard to actually really curate the collection that it will make sense. Same for Pure Musc by Narciso.. I bought it as a nice musk but found out that I always rather go for Fleur de Peau. Why to force it when you always have a better alternative ?
@@sykorovabarca this! It’s worse especially for fragrances that I have less events for. Like really formal events have been few and far in between for me in recent years so I don’t even need more than 2 that I think works for that occasion. Because I will always reach for the one that makes me the happiest when the time comes. The only thing I can do after downsizing to what I love and use, is avoid the same path that lead to accumulating dust collectors which is the hard part for most. It’s easy to get wrapped up but if I test a fragrance and it’s similar to something I have and doesn’t knock it out the ranks, then I move on. Maybeeee get a travel. If it beats something I own, then I know to buy it when I’m done with the current. Or if it’s really serious, gift/sell the one and buy the replacement. 😅 It decreases the amount of waste in the end so I’m sticking to it
Omg, YES! I own both Armaf Milestone and Creeds Millesime Imperial, They both have a slight "gasoline" smell to me. That must be that Violet leaf right?! So Im not going crazy! 🤪lol
Loved hearing the individual stories ❤️ Have you tried Diptyque's Eau Rose EDP? 🌹 Would love to know your thoughts. I'm after a fresh garden rose with some green to it xx
I only became interested in fragrances in the last year and it already bothers me that I have more than I'll ever be able to use. It isn't that easy to sell off fragrances here, much less at a reasonable price. So I'm quickly discovering the woes of storing things I don't want. Am trying to be more discerning about staying with decants vs buying bottles. And wondering if I can also downsize the bottles. Realistically, unless I use the same fragrance most days, 30 or 50ml may really be enough.
Did you really resell your Cuir de Russie EDT? 💔Although I don't appreciate Ambre Narguile - I'm in the minority - I love the fact that you're giving credit when credit is due.
I mean I love the scent... it's just a lot of money. I wouldn't get it if it requires saving up. There are lots of amazing rose ouds out there. I have a video on them. 🌹Xo Sam
I’m more curious about Corpus Equus now… it’s the only one of hers I haven’t tried, I didn’t realize it was leathery, I’d only vaguely read it smells like horses haha but I just read more and it sounds interesting! Cuirs Velours is already on my wishlist though so hopefully I don’t like Corpus Equus too!
Amouage Material is a scent I love but never wear. For some reason I'm never in the mood for it. I'm not quite ready to get rid of it but if in a year I still don't reach for it I will find it a new home.
@dajkm If you meant to ask where to buy the perfumes she is decluttering, I saw her response in another comment that if you’re in the UK, you can DM her in Instagram.
That's exactly it... I've loved the ones I've had, but... how am I telling people to pay these prices when I know they are inflated? It didn't sit well with me 🌹Xo Sam
I am NOT downsizing or "decluttering" my collection - that's kinda the point of collecting. Collecting fragrances is no different than collecting stamps, coins, cars, dolls, shoes, antiques or anything else. I think it is perfectly acceptable to have as many fragrances as one can afford, regardless of whether they "have a youtube channel". 🙄
This is the exact reason why I watch this channel - fragrances I haven’t heard about yet. BRAVA Sam for introducing many of us to new brands and for the great content that you do:)
Great advice on over buying, Im definately guilty 🫥. Also, I've heard that Boadicea scents focus on the opening and the drydown is.. meh.. true in your opinion?
