Thank you to our Supreme Patron Jane for this request! Wow, these guys are even more ridiculously good live! Bill and Fripp were ROCKING! This is from the "Three of a Perfect Pair *Live in Japan 1984*" and was rereleased in 2004 on a DVD titled "Neal and Jack and Me"
Tony Levin was playing the chapman stick I am guessing? I could not for the life of me figure out what it was in the video LOL Adrian's vocals fit this song perfectly. What a groovy little track, man.

So here's the thing about that riff: I watched a video where Fripp explained this - Belew and Fripp are playing almost exactly the same thing (there are like two notes difference in the entire sequence or something), over and over again, with no alterations. The reason why it sounds like they are throwing extra things in there is because their respective riffs are in DIFFERENT TIME SIGNATURES. So they start off the same, then they diverge, and then they merge back together, going in and out of phase with each other. The ebb and flow of this repetition is what makes it so hypnotic. Add the fact that they seem to be using the same guitar tone so you can't tell who is playing what part and the result is a truly ingenius, singular piece of music. I'm sure some other band has done this but I have no idea who they might be.

Oh, I highly recommend you listen to Adrien’s first two solo albums, lone rhino and twang bar king. They’re both brilliant. This KC is very much a fusion of the creativity of Adrien + Fripp (and everyone else, obviously). Adrien is wildly creative; the lyrics are all him, and his playing woven in with Fripp makes this incarnation totally unique.

Belew was a drummer before taking up guitar. Part of what makes him such a good support player IMO. Seeing KC in '81 with this lineup literally changed my musical trajectory. Probably for the worse financially. :) As impressive as Belew is with all the big stars & gunslingers, seeing him front his own band - The Bears - were some of his best live performances.

Tool listened to this band and emulated some of their techniques. this is 40 years ago and Crimson was "Bleeding Edge Prog" Playing the Chapman Stick made Tony Levin very unique and he's played on numerous recordings. Then Fripp & Belew are playing Roland Synth Guitars while Bill Bruford plays Tama/Simmons drums. This show is in Japan and the Japanese simply LOVE King Crimson and they make Tama and Roland instruments. These guys INVENTED this music and made electronic drums, Sticks and Synth guitars beyond COOL.

The guitarists - Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, are playing in 2 time signatures - 13/8 and 14/8 respectively. That's why this song plays with your head. Then imagine singing while playing one of those guitar parts!! Fripp has always played while sitting on a stool because he was taught that guitar is meant to be played while sitting down, no matter what other rock guitarists might think. Of course I would never accuse Robert Fripp of thinking like anybody else. Then add in the incredible percussion of Bill Bruford and Tony Levin's bass and enjoy the results!

Lee: The first time I heard this, I thought I had entered a black hole. Then when Fripp and Belew separated by one 8th note while picking in 7, only to re-sync up a couple measures later, I thought I was Dr. Manhattan from the movie Watchmen waking up with a hangover. Then I saw them do it live, with Belew singing at the same time he's bending time and my head exploded. Talk about a band breaking new ground!? When I'm an old man with the shakes, I'll be trying to use a grapefruit spoon and slit my wrist with it if this comes on. I dare surgeons in California to operate to this song...

Tony is playing a 12-string Chapman stick. He helped popularize the instrument. It's kind of a mix between bass and guitar, since half of it has bass strings and the other half has treble strings, and it's commonly played by tapping the strings (like Tony is doing here) instead of fingering or plucking them. As a bass player, he focuses more on the bass strings, but the instrument is super versatile. Check Tony's own band called Stick Men to watch him put the instrument to full use. And yes, they definitely influenced Tool. Funny thing is that, at some point, the bands toured together and Fripp got impressed by them, to the point he now claims there's more influence of Tool in KC's music than he ever heard KC's influence in theirs.

Seeing your reaction to this reminds me of when I first saw this 40 years ago. My buddies and I in high school, we were just getting into 70s prog - Yes/ELP/Genesis/Kansas. Had heard of KC but never listened and honestly for my 17 year old brain maybe KC was a bit too obscure. This vid is from a concert vid they used to play on MTV, of all places, back in the day. So my buddies and I are watching this and were just blown away. Same questions you had, like what is that thing the bass player is playing! Trying to figure out the times and such and also seeing Bruford use the Simmons electric drums in a very different way. I took about another year or so for me to mature enough to finally go down the KC rabbit hole. I love the 3 80's KC record with this lineup. Three of a Perfect Pair is a bit of a letdown but the other 2 are awesome, my favorite being Beat. I read something in the 80s, maybe an interview with Bruford, that this playing in 2 different time sigs is called cross rhythms as opposed to polyrhythms. Whatever its called, I love it. Brufords tune, Beelzebub, is a good example of it where in the beginning section the drums and bass are playing in a different time than the melody riff. I forget the times but its something like 9/8 over 5/8.

thanks for this. the level of technique in this track might render it sterile in other hands. but we have fripp, belew, levin, bruford. god what a monster lineup. I saw their penultimate live concert at the Greek Theater Berkeley. I'd suggest checking out some of KC's later albums, often ignored. there's some amazing stuff on ConstruKction of Light and Power To Believe. and maybe my ATF, a fripp solo track... Breathless off his solo album Exposure. as a drummer you'll appreciate Narada Michael Walden's contribution. brain-filling. the dissonance of fripp vs levin is bordering on atonal but it's a short track. go on, you'll have fun. :-)

Adrian Belew will always be my favorite KC frontman. They stole him from Talking Heads who stole him from David Bowie who stole him from Frank Zappa. His style of guitar complimented Fripps well then add his ability to play animal or other sounds. Seing them live in 2003 was an eye opener in that there were many complex parts I had always assumed were Fripp or Tony on the Chapman Stick that were actually Adrian. Tony played standard bass or the Stick which is a custom finger tap played instrument. He was the biggest name to popularize it. Later KC bassist Trey Gunn primarily played a similar but larger later descendant called a Warr Guitar. They have a very distinct sound to them.

Then they checked sales figures and instead asked if Tool would like for KC to be _their_ opening act! Which they did for a tour, during which a lot of the material for the album "The Power to Believe" was developed.

In before the block. The Chapman Stick came out in the 70's but never caught on beyond freaks like Tony Levin. 😉 You can also often see him playing it when he tours with Peter Gabriel. It evolved into the Warr guitar, which a future member of KC -- Trey Gunn -- played. The drum mix is pretty weak on this video IMO. Bill's playing sounds much fuller and better integrated into the rest of the music on the studio version.

Mean Mr. Fripp is gonna betcha My understanding is that Fripp has been in court with his record company for decades and he doesn't want the monetization of these videos going to them, so he flags everything.

Well I don't turn monetization on for KC videos:) so hopefully he notices that lol

I was led to believe Fripp had eventually regained all his mechanical copyrights - which is why the entire Crimson catalog is now in the hands of Discipline Global Mobile - in which case the anti-reaction-channel crusade is just him being a vile noxious abusive amoral spazyshitglob, as always.

So Crimson sounds like Tool years before Tool played? You always need to see who was first and who sounds like who.

I literally said like 5 times that tool stole the riff from KC. You should finish watching the video before commenting 😆

something about the mix in the strong parts quit some of the intensity. Listen the studio and others live version by your own :)

It blows my mind that you're a drummer and did not even mention Bill Bruford. He is one of the best drummers to ever exist.

Bro, I've got like 10 videos dedicated to bills side projects alone. Not including his time with Yes or other KC videos. He is my favorite drummer lol

I get the sense that Fripp can be a bit of a dick, but there's no denying the man's talent and influence. I love this lineup so much. Belew was a fantastic frontman, with a great voice and fantastic lead guitar skills. Bruford and Levin are a HOF rhythm section. And Fripp is Fripp. Talent oozing all over the place here! BTW, love the Olias CD behind you! 👍🤟

Love- NOT - how you extol the atmosphere as you destroy it with your continual interjections. Maybe turn off your mic during playback so we're not subjected to a constant stream of irrelevancies and digressions. Save 'em for your wrap-up. Just a suggestion. Enjoying the selections whether picked by you or subscribers, less enamoured of the ever interrupted flow. 😒🤐🙄😉🤙🏼🎶❤️✨️🎄🎅🏼🙏🏽

King Crimson has been together since the summer of 1968….I doubt if they sound like Tool…since they invented the sound.
