We had a question from a viewer asking what the frame loss is when using 3 monitors, so we decided to "investigate" and share the results in this short video.
Hope you enjoy!

I have a three monitor setup on my MSI Aegis Gaming Desktop, with 13th Gen Intel i7 with 16gig RAM, as well as an 8 gig Nvidia 4060 GPU. I must add that I have overclocked my machine using the MSI Afterburner, and turned off HAGS in order to optimize performance without sacrificing FPS. My x-Plane graphics settings are set to very high in almost all categories. ( I like a high quality imagery during my flights). In my unscientific test, I used one monitor for London England, since it is extremely graphic heavy and I was able to get between 40-60 FPS sometimes even slightly higher. After using all three monitors, however, my performance took a deep dip down to 15-20 FPS in London. Sometimes slightly better. The good news is that in most world scenarios, the three monitor setup was able to tackle up to 30FPS. Overall I am happy with the performance, even when it occasionally dips down to 15 FPS. (...almost forgot to add that the three monitors are setup for 2k not 4K... I am not entirely sure that my current system setup would be able to handle the 4K load at all.) Just my two cents worth.

Great comment and thanks for taking the time for such a thoughtful comment. I am currently on M1 Ultra Mac Studio with three 2K monitors.I have some settings turned up to max and some pretty low, especially shadow settings. These particularly eat the frame rate. I get between 18-24 fps on the ground, depending on the airport and 25-30 in the air. Waiting for M4 Mac Studio next year since there isn’t going to be an M3 Mac Studio or Mac Pro.

Nice video Richard. I’ve just come back to XP12 from MSFS as the latter triple monitor option is distorted. XP much better for this type of setup as you can adjust the zoom and alignment. A weird thing happening where the triple screen seems to max out at 30fps. But its also great to hear someone else who’s happy with “normal” frame rates, its defintely worth the immersion and like you I wont be going back. Keep up the great videos. Richard (X-Plane user of some mature years based in London)

Thanks so much! I want to visit London… and Paris. But Paris will have to wait. Bedbug problem. 😂 Both are on my bucket list though. But anyway, I LOVE the 3 monitor setup. Can’t ever go back to single monitor. And yes, frame rate reading is not nearly as important as visually how it looks. Thanks for the comment.

Interesting and well made; may I ask you for confirmation your pc specs?

Cat3 Design out of Australia. Just google it. Should be able to find it pretty easily.

I run XP12 triple monitor and find it unpleasant when it dips below 30 fps. That's on a 2080 Super, so I'm thinking about updating to a 40 series. I'm still unsure how much it will help with the CPU-bound nature of the sim currently. This is on an i9 12900. Hopefully Laminar will work on the CPU efficiency and ability to split it over more cores soon.

Interesting. I find that on my Mac Studio, 15 fps and above looks pretty smooth. Thanks for watching!

With my 4090 in xp12 in 1080 3 views , just 20-30 frames , in msfs in 4k about 50

2k screen you said. not hd, not 4k. so what was the resolution?

2K is HD but not UHD which I what 4K is. But resolution is going to depend on your computer (I’m using a fully spec’d M1 Mac Studio), specifically graphics card/GPU, your games graphics settings and for X-plane, the airports you fly into and out of make a difference as well- point is, there are multiple factors that effect frame rate. With X-plane, I’ve found that 15 fps is adequate to make x-plane run smoothly. And really, it’s the smoothness of the game that matters, not so much the frame rate. Screens eat through a TON of graphics. Our frame rate for one screen was 50, for two frame rate was about 33 and for three screens, frame rate was about 20. But again, frame rate depends on a variety of factors.

@@WingITFlightSimI run two monitors in HD, (1920X1080@60hz), and I’m getting the same results. If I run the monitors at the default refresh rate or 120hz the frames drop even more. It also depends on what settings you have in your graphics tab in XPlane, fully cranked will drop frames fast, especially in heavy density airports. Graphics card is also an issue, I run GTX1650 WITH 4gb ram….so if I’m getting good results with that then there is hole for great frames using something like the new RTX Cards! Hope that made sense 😀

Couldn’t agree more. The airport, graphic settings, and a host of other factors play a significant role in frame rate. Great points! And it made perfect sense.
