On setting that one stud wall by yourself I noticed that you lifted with your back. You should squat down, get your fingers around it and stand up. Lift with your legs. Ha! just a little coaching. Your video series is spectacular. Thank you many times over, you're very generous with your time and knowledge. I too am a solo operator. Your tips on tacking alinement timbers in place, framing stops to adjacent walls and so on are excellent reminders to think things through. Very well done. Very well indeed. We're going to pull the trigger on our own house/shop soon. Your video series reassures the devoted wife that the project is manageable. For now she pretty much stays in the kitchen radeling those pots and pans but that's part of the plan too. Thanks again and best regards young man!

I’m just finishing my Barndo up now. That’s some strong glue, but I wouldn’t have used it myself. I put thin foam down under my treated lumber to keep the moisture off of it. Even treated lumber eventually rots if it stays wet. The foam keeps the moisture away from your lumber. I held them in place with ramset nails.

Did you have any concern with hitting your pex tubing with the nails? That’s why I didn’t use them
@Silvertip1958

Smart Easy DIY we didn’t put those in, we’re in a fairly mild climate. But I would have used the 22 cal nails if I had. I’ve been using them for 40 years. I’ve had to tear down temp buildings that had them and they don’t penetrate more than a 1/2” or so. Hopefully they put those lines deeper than that. I wouldn’t have used a drill and bolt though, you have to take those pretty deep in the concrete.

This is really cool for a DIYer, to be able to do it at your own pace concealed away within the barn structure. But aside from that I’m wondering what the pros are of using the barn at all? If you have to frame it out anyway, what does doing it inside of a barn offer? Couldn’t you just frame everything out and then adhere metal cladding to the home if you wanted a metal exterior?
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 7 месяцев назад
Yes you certainly could. I wouldn’t have had to frame the walls besides the horizontal girts but I just decided to for a little more stability for the drywall.

Hi Cheryl which joists are you referring to?
@j.edwards2181
@j.edwards2181 2 года назад
Great info! We want to build our home inside a historic wood barn, using the barn as a shell. The walls and ceiling would also act to strengthen the barn, since they would be almost touching the shell. The existing concrete floor shows signs of movement/cracking, so we'd like to 'float' the floor. We'd frame in floor joists to the new walls to enable that. Any resources you know of that would help guide us through this? Thanks.

Thanks so.much for previous reply. you are amazing. Which #video best shows the connection of the post to the double truss or single end truss? I was planning on using. lamimating /gluing and screwing three 2x6 and leave the middle 2x6 a bit shorter at the top to connect with the bottom horiz. 2x6 of the truss and bolt it. any thoughts?
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 4 года назад
Thank you so much! Yeah I think that should work OK. On the middle ones that were double trusses I ended up notching out part of the post and sitting right on the post and then I lagged it in with some really heavy duty 6 inch lags. On the end trusses I put a 2 x 6 block on the outside of the post for it to sit on and then lag both of them really well into the post too. In the video where we set the trusses I tried to show that a little bit.

How tight to the bottom of the truss did you build in order to still swing the wall up? 1/8"? Our shell is done, concrete pour tomorrow. Hoping to start framing next week. Our shell builder suggested we try to get the interior walls to right under the truss to add some load bearing capacity.
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 4 года назад
If you want to build one extremely tight to help with loadbearing I would suggest building it in place. Like doing top plates and bottom plate then doing one stud at a time and toe nailing it into the plates. Otherwise I would say you have to leave about a quarter inch otherwise you’ll never get it in place as you tip it up. If they’re non-load bearing but you want to tighten them up you can use shims on top after you stand it up.

Hi . Can you put Rocket Stove for heat the Pole barn house or not if all the pole barn build from the wood and the person can put side where to set the rocket stove heat and build it from Rock even the floor. Can i do that in my pole barn so it can't cost me when I use electric or even heat from gas?
@SmartEasyDIYer

Yes I believe you could heat with a rocket stove just fine. Check out honey do carpenters aircrete rocket stove ideas on RU-vid here. They work really well from what it looks like.

How do you attach the wood frame to the steel frame? Are their holes already drilled in the steel to bolt the wood studs to them?

Thanks for your videos! We are building a shop/house with heated floors and will start framing in a couple weeks. Your videos have been really helpful! I wanted to ask you about your stud spacing. It looks like you are using 16" centers, is that right? Is it possible to use 24" on the outside walls and 16" on the inside walls?
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 4 года назад
Thank you Kimberly that is much appreciated! Sounds like you have a fun project! Yes that’s correct I did 16” just to make it a little sturdier for drywall but you can definitely do 24”. It’s not weight supporting since your posts are taking all the weight. Good luck I hope it goes well!

I did not see any truss brackets attached to the top interior walls... Have you experienced any truss uplift (cracking in the upper corners) of your interior walls???
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 3 года назад
No problem at all. The trusses are lagged into the tops of the post so they shouldn’t go anywhere.
@michaelambrosia
@michaelambrosia 3 года назад
@@SmartEasyDIYer if there is truss uplift, it happens most in the center...sidewalls don't experience much of that. glad it hasn't happened though
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 3 года назад
You mean in the center between the posts? Because the trusses are sitting directly on top of the posts and they are lagged in really well so I don’t see them ever lifting up.

@@SmartEasyDIYer no center of the trusses in the middle of the house. humidity and temperature causes the trusses to expand in a way that causes them to bow and lift up in the middle

How did you secure your walls to the trusses? Are you worried about truss uplift?
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 5 лет назад
I’m not worried about truss uplift since I anchored the trusses directly to the posts with quite a few big lags. I nailed the wall sections to the posts on the end studs and toe nailed them in the top and bottom plate as well. I anchored the bottom plate on the concrete with caulk and anchor bolts. Thanks
@sfaunt5669
@sfaunt5669 5 лет назад
@@SmartEasyDIYer The uplift I was referring to is when the top chord is cold and in the while the bottom is warm in insulation. Causing the truss to bow up and tear up sheetrock and wall structures. It's been noted before that a truss has pulled up so hard that it pulled the floor plate off the floor. I only ask because I'm looking to do the same style building and have been advised to use Simpson's truss connectors.
@SmartEasyDIYer
@SmartEasyDIYer 5 лет назад
Oh ok. Well I used Simpson hangers on the trusses but that was for the roof perlins that went between the trusses on edge. I’ve never really heard that uplift be an issue where I live. Maybe it’s different too since I doubled up the trusses.

This comment is old, but I came here because I’m curious about this as well. About to frame my interior walls and wondering if I should use truss clips rather than connect my walls tight and nail them. Less worried about the drywall than distorting the trusses over time or pulling up on interior walls. My understanding is the moisture changes during different times of the year can cause expansion and contraction of the trusses, causing them to pull up and down slightly. Guess I’ll keep watching RU-vid videos! Seems like most people just nail them but I might just get the clips and it might be overkill but…
