I love Greg’s humility. I am one of the people who commented on the headers and I think it speaks volumes about your knowledge and intent to build a permanent home, given that you went back and re-oriented them. What you have built should certainly withstand one hell of a snowload, not to mention any winds. You sharing your elbow injury was pretty tame as far as I'm concerned, but social media has become very sensitive. I hope there are no complications removing the staples and that everything has healed well. I guess we will have to settle for a non-visual update 😉

Take a look or try mixing your batch facing away from the form. The mixing blades are typically designed to throw the mix into the drum facing one way the. When tipped the other way it will work the mix outward to dump just like a cement truck. They reverse the drum but by tipping the portable mixer you reverse the direction.

Greg just a tip on pouring concrete. I have been told to take a hammer of some type and peck on the boards on your forms and it makes the sides of your concrete look a lot smoother. Keep up the good work and great videos.
@derekread8220

You can also use a hammer drill (the type you can lock in the hammer effect) against the side of the formwork with a scrap piece of lumber between the two to achieve the same effect.

Hi, concrete is a mixture of sand, stone, cement and water. Bags with ready-mixed materials are only supplied with water. If the manufacturer's instructions on the product are followed, a concrete with the strength they indicate is obtained. If you change, for example, the amount of water, the strength of the concrete changes. Typically the concrete is desired to be more liquid and this is achieved by adding more water. Unfortunately, it changes the strength of the concrete. The water dries out and leaves a concrete with shrinkage cracks as a result, reduced strength and a surface that erodes because the water pulls the cement up to the surface, so it is missing from the mix. A surface without sand and stones which wears off quite quickly. The first mix which had little unmixed material was perfect in consistency to become the strongest concrete. The next ones had way too much water. A tip, put the water in the mixer first, save 1 liter of dry concrete mix in the bag and mix well, add the last liter at the end. Then the drum mixer can better mix the concrete. A forced mixer mixes better than a drum mixer and is more forgiving with the sequence. If you want a softer concrete, you add plasticizing liquid or you vibrate the concrete without changing the mixing ratio. I became an apprentice bricklayer when I was 14 and started mixing concrete in a large drum mixer and I learned how to mix concrete from my colleagues and my employer. I got scolded if the mixture was too dry or too wet. Later in life I learned the theory behind mixing concrete as an engineering student.

From my experience with concrete, you are better pouring this type of pad a little on the way side. Oil the forms before you pour to insure they are easily removable and work the form edger with a brick trowel to insure a good finish.
@CARyan08
@CARyan08 2 дня назад
The band you nailed to the house wall to hang the rafters on, if you didn't use structural screws into the wall studs to attach, in addition to the nails, this is a must. The load on the roof is transferring onto the band and the contact point of the rafters on the outside wall. The farther you go down the roof towards the outside wall, a higher percentage of the load is carried by the outside wall. The opposite is true going back up the roof towards the band. Most house roof structures [built to respective local code] can withstand 20 pounds per square foot. As a rule of thumb, saturated snow weighs approximately 20 pounds per cubic foot. This relates to snow potentially weighing from 1 pound per cubic foot [dry snow] to over 21 pounds per cubic foot for wet snow. Think of it this way, a 200 SF roof, with 12 inches of wet snow on it @ [21 lbs/CF], = 4200 lbs sitting on your roof. That's basically a small/medium size car sitting on your roof.

The headers aren’t something that creates an immediate fail. It’s usually a long slow process over 15 to 30 years. Over time they bow and windows start sticking or in extreme cases the glass breaks. The roof line starts getting wavey. Glad you fixed them. Glad the arm is healing well.

i am proud of you Greg you changed them.. meaning the headers and yes it is a code violation anywhere i built. and so next time you don't have to put a 1/4 inch piece on outside slap one inside of 2 X 6 so on outside it is flat with the face of a 2 x 6. i even sometimes glue mine. put a 2 x 4 or whatever i am using down first,.... run glue all over wood. Slap a piece of plywood on top of that,... more glue and then 2 x 4 or whatever i am using to make header and screw /nail it together. personally i use screws when i glue.. because it holds better while glue dries.... and they are soooooo tough. Sadly though taking them apart they don't come apart very easy. You pretty much destroy header. But i am glad your healing well..... Katie is always looking sunny with her bubbly personality,.... pets look awesome so keep up the great work. Take care be safe. and please oh please invest in some good scaffolding. i used to do like you did until OSHA stopped at my job site and fined me big time for code violation on sketchy scaffolding. and i know its on your place out in the middle of nowhere.. but always think safety.... we live longer that way... and running down that board is why you build headers on there edge instead of their flats.. you heard the crack right? and then the bounce you got? well that is why you don't lay headers flat. and just saying that... that is why your rafters are on their edge and not flat either.. no strength 💪 💪 on flats just edge. but i am soooo proud of you two.... awesome work keep them videos coming.
