Au Canada, point besoin d'équipement high-tech. On est né dans la neige, on fait nos propres skis et raquettes avec ce que nous donne la forêt. On assome les ours avec nos poings et fait de très bon steak cuits sur pierre chaudes avec cette viande. Et nos adversaires, on les élimine avec nos tomahawks géants quand on est paresseux. Sinon on utilise une bonne claque sur la gueule et si on veut faire de l'esbrouffe, alors on utilise nos poings comme avec les ours.... Voilà comment les vrais hommes du froid agisseent! :D

Good to know, the French Chasseurs Alpins and the Italian Alpinis was the first to use beret to represent their culture but UK was the first to regulary use the beret.

I beg to differ. The French mountain troops beret (also worn by the artillery regiment , the 93ème RAM) is originally the Bearnese shepeherds beret. The RTC black beret was adopted by other branches of the Army albeit dark blue ( except paratroopers : red , Foreign Legion : green Army light aviation : royal blue) and bent leftwards. The French commandos marine ( which are Navy) are the only unit in the French military who are wearing their green berets bent rightwards ( British style) as a reminder the corps was first set up in the UK during WWII and trained in Achnaccary together with the SBS under Lord Lovat.

The béret of thé Chasseurs Alpins is different from the Classic French béret. It is larger. So you can put your feet in it. It is called « la tarte » (the tart).

Other troops proficient in mountain warfare could infiltrate through those passes and flank you. Also training like this prepares you for arctic or winter warfare generally. Guerrilla warfare frequently occurs in mountainous regions as well, see Afghanistan for example.

Because when you have to go get badguys in those kind of terrains and climate you'd better have people trained to or be ready to lose half your men to frostbite, ravines and ambushes.

Well, France southern (Spain) and eastern (Italy/Switzerland) borders are all just snowy moutains so it's nice to have troops able to defend them, but I don't think they're a primarily defensive asset. They're named "alpin hunters" for a reason: their main role is to "hunt" enemies that would use the protection of snow and moutains to avoid regular troops. Since vehicles and regular infantry can't access this terrain, it's perfect for insurgents fighting a guerilla, and so it's nice to have soldiers that can deal with it.

During the battle of Alps, in 1940, in less than 3 weeks, the Italian and german troops lost 6500 men and the French Alpine hunters with their mountain artillery less than 600 men. L'appel d'offre a été spécialement définit pour exclure les sociétés françaises avec un simple critère ; un minimum de CA sur l'année précédente dans le domaine précis demandé. C'est un choix politique pour nous cloisonner sur du matériel allemand. On a exactement le même scénario sur notre prochain blindé lourd. Nos gouvernements successifs espèrent que l'Allemagne nous laisse la conception du prochain chasseur en contrepartie. A l'heure actuelle on a rien.

If the Chasseurs Alpins aren't "elite infantry", almost nothing on this planet is. "Elite" isn't just used to describe SOF units or commandos but units or corps that really excel in their field. Special forces/commandos aren't infantry anyway. Nobody calls them "elite infantry" for that term to be inappropriate for the Chasseurs Alpins lmao. The GCM are commandos/pathfinders of the French Mountain troops, so a commando unit within the elite infantry corps that is the Chasseurs Alpins.

@@maxlamenacefr That's the perpetual confusion. GCM and GCP in a way are special forces... for the brigade. They do not do special operations. The GCP are pathfinders. If we use the same classification, the US special forces... are not special forces, only Delta team is.

A lot of countries consider the Alpin's hunter as elite troops, France might not but for instance the US consider them almost like SOF, but I agree they are regular troops, only a part is actually "elite"

Hey Frere! In France, we were not elite force but every other infantry regiment who came to train as a stage with us, there were suffering, therefore we are better than any other infantry. We fought in Afghanistan, in Norway. Even the legion and the paratrooper don't do that - So Respect! Chasseur un jour - Chasseur toujours (hunter one day - hunter for ever).

Il y a aussi ecole EMHM. Il y a des Saint-Cyriens Lieutenants qui choisissent les chasseurs. Respect aux Paras - Mon oncle etait engage para.

pretty much all the equipement has or is in the process of beeing replaced. FR F2 is beeing replaced at this time by a scar H version with an excellent sighting system, all troop carriers are in the process of beeing changed too

the FRF2 is my favorite rifle of all time, fun fact : it's a HEAVY modified MAS36 as far as i remember

FRF2 is one of the best sniper rifles in 7.62x51, far superior that the ones used in the US forces

Mouais ça aurait pu fonctionner sauf que les bataillons de Chasseurs à pied sont plus anciens que les Cacciatori delle Alpi et les Bataillons s’appellent Alpin car ils s'agit de Chasseurs à pied positionnés dans les Alpes donc "Alpin". Ça suit la même logique de nom que les autres bataillons comme les Chasseurs d'Orléans, Chasseurs cyclistes, Chasseurs portés, Chasseurs à pied parachutistes, ou Chasseurs mécanisés.
