Vigée Le Brun painted Marie Antoinette for the first time in 1779. She described her experience like this: “At the first sitting the imposing air of the Queen at first frightened me greatly, but Her Majesty spoke to me so graciously that my fear was soon dissipated. It was on that occasion that I began the picture representing her with a large basket, wearing a satin dress, and holding a rose in her hand. This portrait was destined for her brother. Emperor Joseph II., and the Queen ordered two copies besides - one for the Empress of Russia, the other for her own apartments at Versailles or Fontainebleau.”
Now what got me is how Elizabeth decided that if they were gonna stare at her she would paint their eyes looking away. while Now forever in history their painted eyes may not stare at you and I, because they couldn’t stop staring at her…! Iconic!
@@sha1658 yes I can only imagine how much I wouldn’t like someone just staring at me making eyes!! And I’m sure back in this time it was 100% more awkward for her.

This documentary was irritating, due to the way they kept switching between past and future tenses when talking about past events. It reminds me of the character Dios in Terry Pratchett's book "Pyramids". (Dios wouldn't talk about people or events in the past tense.)
You mean the greatest royal propagandist in Europe ... hardly the greatest "painter", but then we can no longer expect objectivity when dealing with anyone who is non-male, nonwhite, and so on, only hyperbole.
