For me he's the ultimate dramatic tenor. The overtone in his dark spinto like voice is unbelievable. Properly supported on the body there has been nobody who can sing this scene, on record, like Corelli. RIP Franco and bless you for recordings like this
Corell was one of the greatest opera singers that ever lived. Notice the perfect timing the rich and depth of his voice and the perfect intonation. Absolutley outstanding performance.
In my humble opinion, Franco Corelli was the greatest dramatic tenor of the 20th century! I have watched this video of "Ah, si ben mio. Di quella pira!" at least 100 times and it still makes the hair on my arms stand up. What strength, power (and in Franco's case, physical beauty - which never hurts)! He will always be my favorite operatic tenor.
Trust Pavarotti to only judge the power. When he was young and healthy he was all about power, and even in poor condition he tried to continue on power as his main offering. Corelli was so melodious, so precise, so expressive, but some people only get the power. I pity them. Beati pauperes spiritu.
@@towmlvb3423 i love Corellis voice dearly, he is my favourite tenor, with maybe del monaco second, but... first of all he had his flaws, especially in pronounciation, so if you mean precise as in musically precise, yes, lyrically he wasnt.. and he was more powerful, expressive and most of all dramatic than he was melodious.. my father saw him in Vienna, where we live, in i think 1971 in Don Carlos (if my memory doesnt betray me), especially if you see him live you notice his flaws, like pronouncing and singing every role dramatic, no matter if it suits the role.. but having said that his dramatic touch, his crazy attitude to singing, his stellar voice, his idiosyncrasis, all of that exactly make him one of the greatest tenors to every breath.. and my favourite.. he wasnt as technically perfect as pavarotti, which i like a lot less, but he was the only Corelli

IMO, Corelli was the best tenor of the 20th century. His singing on this aria is as close to perfection as one can ever hope to hear. Outstanding. Absolutely great.
I have heard most of the best tenors, including Corelli many times, live at the Met. from the mid 1960s through 2018 and have come to the following conclusion: There are great tenors and then there is CORELLI!!!
IMO, Corelli was one of the greatest ( if not the greatest) opera singer that ever lived. This performance is as close to perfect as any human can perfom. The mans voice was incredible. Absolutely great.

I grandi della lirica..Corelli..Fleta..Byorling..Gigli..Del Monaco..non rientrano nel bagaglio culturale della nostra televisione di stato..Ci viene proposto il chansonier di musica leggera BOCELLI in questa romanza...spero di essere stato chiaro

Se è stato dimenticato Corelli figuriamoci Gigli,Lauri-Volpi, Del Monaco, Distefano,Bergonzi...Tutti tenori eccezionali ma il problema principalmente è un altro: l'opera,la musica,gli esecutori non sono più al centro dell'attenzione dell'ascoltatore medio,gli si preferisce tutto ciò che è scenico, e perdonate la prosaica espressione ma oggi attirano più un paio di gambe e due tette sul palco di un teatro dell'opera che tutto il resto. Giusto per ricordare un episodio: il Walzer di Musetta di Aida Garifullina,quando fece quello spogliarello in stile Nicole Kidman

Niente fà vibrare le corde dell'anima e del cuore come Franco Corelli , in lui c'è il vero colore drammatico, la passione, la forza , l'eroismo,, la perfezione vocale nel vibrato e nel fraseggio, nelle mezze voci e negli insuperabili smorzati, devo dire che ancora non è nato chi lo potrà pareggiare. Stupendo!!

Corelli just got a talent like many others and had a hard work on this. Don't think, that he is a better, than all, because he is your admire. Don't think, that whats impossible for you, but possible for others is a reason to idolize. Maybe, you have talents too, but don't know about this and talents are different.

God gave us his gift, voice, and it is just up to us, what to do with this. Corelli had a bigger gift than others:) And sorry, but I have my own believes. Beautiful, very beautiful and elegant tenor. Corellis diminuendo is so beautiful and controlled. Very difficult aria to sing like this, many tenors sing it forte or mezzo forte when you have to do diminuendo. It's because they do not have such a good technics like Corelli has.
The seamless legato, the expressivity of the tone, the lavish use of portamento and other nuances,in the service of the greatest tenor voice (apart from Caruso) in recorded history make this a performance for the ages!
Questo brano cantato in tal modo io credo inarrivabile e sono convinta che lo stesso Maestro Verdi ne sarebbe rimasto a bocca aperta, eppure c'è ancora qualche testa vuota che si permette di fare il pollice verso !!! Probabilmente loro sono in grado di fare di meglio . Ma possono fare e dire quello che vogliono, un altro TENORE FRANCO CORELLI la natura ancora non lo ha partorito!!! I love Verdi´s music, the Stretta has been my favourite melody in this branch for more than 20 years - and THIS is certainly the best and most powerful Manrico I have ever heard and seen. Really, this IS Manrico. A giant of a tenor, a truly magnificent voice that just as brilliantly calls to battle as it vows love and protection to his beloved bride. And he even looks like Manrico and Siegfried in one! Thank you and mille grazie!
One of the best things about RU-vid is that younger audiences, especially younger singers, have the opportunity to see and hear the great artists of the past. I heard Corelli's Calaf in Turandot (w/Birgit Nielssen) when the Met used to tour...this was at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA in the 1960s. It was thrilling and beautiful beyond words. Corelli had not only the gorgeous voice, but the movie star good looks to make everyone swoon.
I'm not an opera expert, but this voice seems amazing to me. In relations with the same singers that are present in this piece here on youtube he is my favourite, no doubts.
