Synopsis: Otello has killed his wife because Iago led him to believe that she betrayed him with another man. He discovers that Iago lied and that Desdemona was innocent. In anguish, he grieves over her death and eventually kills himself.
Niun mi tema,
s’anco armato mi vede.
Ecco la fine del mio cammin...
Oh! Gloria!
Otello fu.
contemplando Desdemona.)
E tu... come sei pallida!
e stanca, e muta, e bella,
pia creatura nata sotto maligna stella.
Fredda come la casta tua vita,
e in cielo assorta.
Desdemona! Desdemona!
Ah!... morta! morta! morta!
(estraendo furtivamente dalle vesti un pugnale)
Ho un’arma ancor!
(si ferisce)
Pria d’ucciderti... sposa... ti bacai.
Or morendo... nell’ombra in cui mi giacio...
un bacio... un bacio ancora...
ah!... un’altro bacio...
(muore)
.
.
.
Let no one fear me
even seeing me armed.
This is my journey’s end...
Oh! Glory!
Othello is no more.
(Letting his sword fall to the ground, he goes to the bed
and gazes at Desdemona.)
And you... how pale you are!
And weary, and silent, and beautiful,
pious creature, born under an evil star.
Cold, as your chaste life,
now gathered to the skies.
Desdemona! Desdemona!
Ah!... Dead! Dead! Dead!
(furtively producing a dagger from his robe)
I still have a weapon!
(stabs himself)
Before I killed you... wife... I kissed you.
Now dying... in the shadow where I lie...
a kiss... another kiss...
ah!... another kiss...
(dies)

Even after Corelli officially retired at age 55, he at age 60 still retained the ability to thrill his listeners. R.I.P.

He did well here, here he does not use some habits he was flamed for in his best days, I did think his voice was magnificent even if he used some habits live over the years that raised some critics to call attention to them, here he is singing very well, though his last. I did respond above to Mr. Musala, to his comment about Lanza, a great voice (but it was not a dramatic voice for Otello), at least not in his short life time, dead at age 38, but the voice was very great, even though Mario L. was not an opera singer ( not basically,) but a great operatic voice for sure,. So when John Musalo mentions, as he did above, that opera critics said Lanza was "the best Otello in this" , he fails to mention what critic? In my time Del Monaco was the #1 Otello live and in fact I saw him sing the role in 1959, I was age 19, and no way was Mario Lanza better at Otello in the aria then MDM, nor did he sing it ever live, ML with a less dramatic voice then MDM had, ML was young in that rec. his last film at age 37 made in 1958, but it wasn't an "Otello" voice, at least not at that time, and he died at age 38, great voice though, an operatic tenor , not really an opera singer, though he did some wonderful singing, not just a lot of over the top stuff .

Sounds great for 60, even with all this echo in the recording. He quit sadly and mostly from suffering with nerves .

@mariaruskova6054 2 месяца назад
I think those "nerves" as he himself calls it, were panic attacks. I wonder how the medicine of the time could not help him? He could sing for another 10 years.

@@mariaruskova6054 yes I think the nerves where perhaps those attacks, as you said, today here the medicine is much improved over his time then.

Chapeau, Top-Video!!!

I can’t help but notice the words from all these final songs seem to reference endings...? Thank you again. I find this offering the most moving. Blessings for your generosity in posting these jewels.

I think, around this time he really came out of his shell again and seriously considered returning to the stage - at least he had multiple appearances and various tv interviews in 1981 and I'm pretty sure he also had his full Otello ready. But he probably listened back to these recordings and decided this is still not up to his own standards, and it's easier to deal with the pressure from the constantly nagging fans than with the pressure of actually having to perform anyway. But I also heard that he practiced and kept in shape essentially till the end of his life, so that if by chance one day he wakes up with THE VOICE returned he would be ready. He truly was crazy but in the best possible way, with utmost respect towards the art form and singing!

Don't forget this is sung live, not a movie with the sound recorded in a studio and Corelli is 60 years old here, not 35 as was Mario in the Serenade film in his recording of it made in 1955. Lanza had one of the most beautiful voices of all time, I always loved the voice, but Corelli was a great opera singer and a different type of voice from Mario and here Franco is past his prime at age 60.
