This is a restored audio recording of an interview made by Willis E. Mcnelly with Frank and Beverly Herbert on February 3rd 1969. The interview explores the origins of Dune, and details Herbert’s line of thinking in terms of politics, ecology, religion and other concepts in their relation to the book.
The original audio of this interview was sourced from archive.org, and it had high background noise, a huge amount of AC mains hum and inconsistent volume levels in many places. I have removed most of this noise where possible, and processed the audio for more consistent dialogue levels - this should make it much easier to listen to. The last 3-4 minutes had some loud machine noise and distortion from the recorder, which unfortunately proved impossible to get rid of completely.
Given that this recording was likely made using a dictaphone in a kitchen or living room of the Herbert home, there are some natural background sounds present. You may hear a clock tick and ring on the hour, or a cat meowing for attention, or tea/coffee being poured. Other than a few overly loud table thumps (which have been reduced where possible), I feel these sounds communicate the candid nature of this interview, and so have decided to leave them in.
