I was recently amazed to discover that there is another Martin Ballade (#2) for flute and piano. This is an arrangement of his Ballade for Saxophone. Martin himself arranged it for the flute. The authentic manuscript was discovered in 2008 by Marya Martin. As the First Ballade is such a favorite and beloved piece of mine, I can hardly wait to get the news out! A wonderful addition to our literature! This is played by Emmanuel Pahud and Francesco Piemontesi, pianist.

Thank you for posting. One of the oddities of this piece is that the music of this "Second Ballade for Flute" actually predates the original ballade for that instrument: the Ballade for Saxophone was composed in 1938, and the Ballade for Flute in 1939! And one small correction: the name of Frank Martin's widow was Maria -- not Marya -- Martin. I had the great honor and pleasure of meeting her over several years while attending the annual meetings of the Frank Martin Society, in Geneva and Lausanne. She was incidentally a professionally trained flutist herself.
