This piece for large orchestra should not be confused with the delicious " little concerting symphony"". Here, we have an ambitious work which shows that the inspiration of Frank Martin was fully compatible with large instrumental forms. The sense of proportions and of the global architecture is indeed impressive. This "symphonie concertante" should deserve the same fame than the Concertos for orchestra of Bartok and Lutoslawski. They address the same range of musical questions, and bring very attractive answers of their own.

This is a beautiful work with an impressive first movement, a brooding second, and a jaunty, march-like finale. Now to compare it with the original version, which I haven't heard in years.

Well, I had forgotten, but I prefer the original version, it’s more original

It's much better when it's petite.

This misses a lot of the 'zing and pep' that make the Petite so irresistible to me.

Copland did something similar in rescoring his Symphony no. 1 and taking away the organ. Martin's original string orchestra version with harpsichord, piano and harp has an indelible character missing from this version. More is - less.

You should change the title, it’s called Petite symphonie concertante!
