Frank Shamrock Thinks Dan Hendo is the Strongest of all Time 

Don't get it twisted. Frank has plenty of ego still. He's lucky if he did shed some of it through old age. But you're right, most old timers seem to be more of what they were, when they were young. Good or bad. However, Frank was always a difficult human being to get a long with.

I think technically Don Frye or Marco Ruas were the first true mixed martial artists. Frank was amazing with his skill set but just not the first

@@jmsmith6 And the reason Frank was Don 2.0 was because he had so much exposure to guys like Funaki, Rutten and Ken while in Pancrase. Those guys were all both submitting and KO'ing people well before Don Frye ever came along. Don would eventually have done it all anyways because he was already proficient in wrestling and Judo even before he started boxing after college. So tying it all together was eventually going to happen. But Frank's style was born as a mixed martial art. Frank didn't ever even begin training until after he got out of prison and 6 months after he began training he fought and beat Bas Rutten in Japan. So unlike Don, who had trained in several individual arts separately since he was a teenager, Frank began training several all at the same time with training partners that were all already several years deep into fighting in a mixed martial art environment that included striking, wrestling and submissions right off the bat. Frank wasn't the first to train in multiple different arts. But he was probably one of the very first to begin his training in a style where there was little to no separation between styles in the form of individual art training. A true pioneer of modern fighting and absolutely remarkable when taken into context of mankind as a whole. Being one of the specific individuals in the 200,000 year history of mankind to progress unarmed combat to what it is today.

@@Danlovestrivium agree with your take. in the sense of Frank being a pioneer, he was probably the first guy (along with Tito, believe it or not) who approached the sport from a scientific angle and tailored his training to reflect that. during the prime of Lion's Den, Frank walked away coz he didnt agree with Ken's training methods, which were a lot of old school tough guy BS.

@@brianmeen2158 Don Frye is a legend, but he was just an old school tough guy who trained in different arts. Frank approached MMA as a SPORT and himself as an athlete (same goes for Tito). there's a reason prime Frank and Tito were so far ahead of the competition back then

Henderson had a neck injury. It fixed his shoulder in place and a little high. Also left his head with a tilt. When you watch his fight interviews you could see he had to rotate his entire upper body to look around, because he couldn't turn with his neck. He could throw that overhead bomb of his really well, but he wasn't physically capable of a variety of punches what with his injury.

The guy that I used to train with(small mma school in the Midwest) trained with quite a few different mma guys. He said the strongest guy he rolled with was Jake Shields. I was as surprised by his answer as you most likely are.

What was different? LOL. He was very very broad-shouldered, wrestled his whole life, and eventually made multiple World and Olympic teams in Greco Roman. He never looked like a bodybuilder but for him to be named the strongest by another fighter isn't all that surprising to me. Dan always looked "stiff" to me but that's probably because he wasn't very flexible. That doesn't mean he couldn't or would't be freakishly strong, which he was. Consider that Greco is all upper body ties. There are no attacks below the waist. I don't think you will find one elite Greco guy who isn't incredibly strong and I'm not talking about lifting weights.

Dc is strong and was in his prime, hendo was already old. Consider DC was an olympian and not that far removed from his olympic days. DC is a natural heavyweight who fought at 205 to avoid conflict with Cain. Its not that surprising really

I liked Hendo’s response though. He’s like, I wouldn’t say he was technically better, I’d say he was heavier than me. And ya Dan fought at 185 and 205. Eventually guys just got too big. Dan was 185 and went up. DC was a heavyweight who went down.

@troy8231 There's a caveat thought.... DC as impressive as he was especially against Jones Hit so hard , yet if Dan hit you it was over , even if you were Fedor. In thier respective primes Dan Knocks out DC. I'd say thats a fair statement.

Yep I believe it was Extreme Fighting 1. That was an awesome bout with Igor and Mario Sperry. Controversial/weird ending though. I watched it live on PPV. You can probably see it on RU-vid somewhere. 👍👍

Cormier was in his prime and Hendo was in his 40s.. Hendo is also smaller than Cormier, and although strength matters in grappling, technique matters more. Cormier is a better wrestler. Are you slow ?

@@jonthompson1068 they were both LHWs. Last time I checked they fought this fight at LHW. DC is short and used to wrestle in a middleweight like weight class.

Because it’s not functional strength you just look aesthetically strong I remember doing jujitsu and rolled with this older guy I was in my early twenty’s this guy was mid thirties early forties and was strong didn’t look it but was solid as a rock I think he worked construction working hard makes you have that kind of strength pushing your body to the breaking point physically will do that

Are you ok? You answered your own question, Dan was a true 185er who went against a prime DC who was a high level Olympic grappler and former HW. DC wrestled 96kg and Dan wrestled at 82kg lol that’s a huge difference in size for wrestling so of course he’s going to get tossed around. But even Rogan has talked about how strong and durable Dan Henderson is, said shaking his hand is like grabbing a piece of Oak.

When they first fought Ken Shamrock was like 41 or 42 years old. Tito retired from fighting the first time around the same age. Tito beat up on an old man in that sport and most people don't bring it up bc Ken was so good people didn't see it that way...but the man was over 40 come on. Father Time always wins.

I'd like to know as well, though I believe frank. He has no horse in the race here as he doesn't particularly like Ken. My best guess is that his second pro wrestling stint ruined Ken's body. You can see that in the Otsuka fight where he tried to be a kickboxer - and actually did very well - and had a LOT of trouble taking Otsuka down, who was a blown up middleweight, if that.

Yeah I honestly don’t think Ken was as strong as he looked . I mean, go watch his early fights - he never really bullied people around with his strength. Definitely a very strong guy but just not as strong as he would have you believe And yes, Tito completely manhandled Ken. I’ll never forget watching that fight live with a friend whose favorite fighter was Ken 😝
