First time I listened to this song was in 1998, I think. I was 9 or 10 years old, and I woke up one night around 3AM and couldnt go back to sleep, so I turned on the radio to entertain myself. A few songs later, this began to play, and I couldnt tell why but it sounded outta this world awesome to me. I didnt know a word in English back than, so I couldnt take notes of the lyrics or who was playing it. Some fivd years later, I accidently found it again, on youtube, and thats how I came to know who Zappa was. Such a great song and such a great artist. I mean, you don't even have to understand what they're singing to have fun and enjoy the music. Gotta love it.
1998,l and then five years later you found it on youtube? Unlikely. RU-vid wasnt founded back than, and even 2005,seven years from 1998, it was too unpopular to have it on the side.
Saw The Stinkfoot Orchestra 8/22 Winston's Ocean Beach/San Diego. Met Ray outside - nice guy - so I gave him a tour shirt I found in storage from a "70s Soul Jam" show given to me by the bands. He liked it so much he put it on and said "It fits perfect, my family will be jealous and will want one" and wore it throughout the show. Thanks for putting me on the pest list, er, I mean, guest list, Ray!
It contains a dig at Bowie, using lyrics from Let's Dance & references to the video of that song. The 'cheezy atom bomb explosion' being a direct reference. Bowie had pinched one of Zappa's musicians & was never forgiven for that. (Adrian Belew, who Bowie enticed away to be on his tour)
Be in my video Darling, every night I will rent a cage for you And mi-j-i-nits dressed in white (Teeny-little-tiny-little) Twirl around in a lap dissolve Pretend to sing the words I'll rent a gleaming limousine Release a flock of Ber-herna-herna-herna Herna-her-nerds Wear a leather collar And a dagger in your ear (Stabbin' and a-stabbin' and a-stabbin' and a-stabbin' at you-ou-ou-ou-ou) I will make you smell the glove And try to look sincere, then we'll Dance the blues (oh, yes we'll dance the blue) Let's dance the blues (what a terrific idea) Let's dance the blues (oh, you'll love it it's a way of life) Under the megawatt moonlight Pretend to be Chinese I'll make you wear red shoes There's a cheesy atom bomb explosion All the big groups use Atomic light will shine Through an old venetian blind Making patterens on your face And then it cuts to outer space With its billions and billions and billions and billions and Be in my video Darling, every night Everyone in cable-land Will say you're 'outta-sight' You can show your legs While you're getting in the car, then I will look repulsive While I mangle my guitar Reen-toon-teen-toon-teen-toon Tee-nu-nee-nu-nee Moo-ahhhh Reen-toon-teen-toon-teen-toon Tee-nu-nee-nu-nee Moo-ahhhh Reen-toon-teen-toon-teen-toon Tee-nu-nee-nu-nee Moo-ahhhh Tee-nu-nee-nu-nee Moo-ahhhh Tee-nu-nee-nu-nee Moo-ahhhh-wah-wah-wah After all the close-up shots of you In bondage leather They'll spray an alley with a hose And then we'll mind the harbour Dance the blues together Let's dance the blues again (sure we will) Let's dance the blues again In the middle of an alley Let's dance your face Let's dance your lips Let's dance your nose And then we'll dance your sinus Wooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooooooo It's definitely a case of moo-ahhhh
It's "MINE the harbour," actually. Like laying mines that blow up boats, you know, wartime stuff. Wherever they were playing was close to a Navy base. Such was Frank's humor.
I really like Bowie (in fact he's among my favorite musical artists) but I don't take any of Zappa's jabs personally. This was the best song of this segment of Zappa's career (maybe) making fun of the two best songs of this segment of Bowie's career, but it goes in several directions, and winds up just making fun of MTV tropes (which, like any ingrained tropes, are funny to make fun of). I wonder what this song would be like if it were about RU-vid instead of MTV...
@@hickorymccay2994 Aye, it’s a real shame FZ died when he did. Another 20 years worth of his acerbic wit would’ve been great! Not to mention all of the mad music we missed out on.
@@franzmeier2128 The videos for Let's Dance (megawatt moonlight, red shoes), China Girl (pretend to be Chinese), and Dancing In The Street (dance the blues in the middle of the alley).
