This version is from the 1982 european tour...right up to the end of the "Blowjob/Bidet" section. At this point it cuts to 1971 flo and eddie band... Ian Underwood on sax and then Zappa playing a telecaster lent to him by a music store in england... because his equipment was burnt in a fire the other day...one of Frank's more unusual solo's on guitar. Then... after the solo it cuts back to the 1982 european tour.

If you want to hear John & Yoko with Zappa you need to listen to Disc 6, Tracks 1 through 5 of the box set "The Mothers 1971"

Look for the newer extended release of the Fillmore East LP. It contains the set that Lennon did with the Mothers. There is Video of it as well.

COMMENT 1: Despite a slow start, there's lots of improv to cherish here - the 1971 portion contains one of Frank's most unusual/refreshing solos [complete with quotes from then-unfinished tunes], the 1982 portion, besides the flashback to the mid-Yellow Snow-incident, has another example of Frank-as-director challenging Tommy Mars as if he were a Crystal Maze contestant. It's just that, well... There are literally a thousand King Kongs to choose from - and if you were making a King Kong to-do list, this album-track wouldn't be nearly as high up the priority list as ... Stockholm 1967 ("the real Ian Underwood!"), BBC TV 1968 ("starring Don as Dr Jekyll and as himself"), Boston Ark 1969 (the medley, with both Gardners soaring), San Fran 1970 ("by George, he's got it!"), Paris 1970 (a whole lotta Jean-Luc), or even the Jazz Noise Here version (with Bruce's tantrum and Kurt's climaxes)

IMO King Kong got better as FZ aquired better players so I would suggest any King Kong after '69.

What a great show and a great tune this was... "The ARK" a live 1969 album recorded in Boston has a great version of "King-Kong" much different than this one. Starts off with Uncle Meat. Really Raw + Dirty sound.

King Kong is a vehicle for jamming; there are probably hundreds to choose from and this is just 1 of many that Zappa released officially. Some great solos here

Zappa probably "borrowed" much of it from Eric Dolphy's Iron Man.

King Kong was written in 1965 or 1966... it was taught to the Mothers of Invention in 1967 or early 1968. Since then... it has been played by almost EVERY version of Zappa live touring bands. This is the Steve Vai touring band. This is not the version that John Lennon (or somebody in Lennon's entourage) "Stole" from Zappa...if you're interested... that version is right here... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T2LTFtm67EA.html The melody which represents the "head" of this song which is now considered a Jazz standard and is found in many "fake books" of Jazz players all over the world, can be heard at 1:32 of John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's..."Jamrag"

COMMENT 2: The issue with Lennon is that when Lennon released his mix/edit of the Fillmore jam (on the bonus disc of Some Time In New York City) he didn't credit King Kong as a track, and consequently only gave Zappa credit/royalties for the Scumbag portion (which, incidentally, he also "spoiled" by submerging Howard's adlibbed lyrics). But it is probably the result of record-company interference, at least in part. Because even if he failed to recognise the inclusion of King Kong as a discrete "tune" , the handwritten notes on the inner sleeve of STiNYC have confusing timings/credits which indicate that Lennon was planning to release a different edit of the event from the one that's actually on the album!

@@Royale_with_Cheeze You're overlooking the whole issue with the handwritting track timings on the inner sleeve which clash with the actual disc. Based on those, insomuch as they can be imagined to ever make any sense, "Jamrag (Lennon/Ono)" is the hand-signal transition into King Kong., and "Scumbag (Lennon/Ono/Zappa)" encompasses a bit of Say Please, the theme statement, the Aawk jam, Scumbag, and a portion of Small Eternity.

Great song but this isnt the correct version with lennon. This version is from the rainbow theater the night Zappa got pushed off the stage and almost died. The one with Lennon is from his performance at the filmore east you can tell by all of Yokos screaming in it lol. I've seen a few interviews with Zappa and it sounds like it was a record studio move more so then Lennon's.

John Lennon stole?! What BS! Lennon got the titles wrong and gave Zappa credit for a different song. People have been spinning a web of tall tales on a lot of different events lately.
