What a brilliant album for 1969. Used then state of the art technology like 16 track recording. Apparently it was the size of a house. The album that announced to the world that Frank is a brilliant, gifted musician/composer etc. Great track, like the rest of the album.

I heard about a guy who was at a Mets' game, and between innings, 'Peaches' was played by the stadium organist. Imagine sitting there in the stands and finally realizing that Zappa was being played. The Saturday Night Live version of this song is a bit different, with more guitar. I even think that Zappa plotted to have the first drum solo on SNL, with Terry Bozzio doing the honors. They all killed it. For some, 'Peaches' is the origin and essence of Zappa... but they are musically myopic. You won't like everything he did, right away. It's a process to understand everything he tried to present. All your fans here are a wealth of information about the gift of Zappa's music. The "Conceptual Continuity" is there, if you seek it.

I can’t believe it took you guys so long to react to one of Frank’s most masterful compositions! This is most definitely one of my top favorite Zappa tunes. I never tire of hearing it. On the surface it seems simple but more listens reveal the complex arrangement and many layered harmonies. It’s just beautiful! Thanks for this reaction!

This is my ringtone. When this album came out I was 18. I already liked the Mothers, but if I was a fan of anyone. it was Jimi Hendrix. But when this came out and listened to it in a recordshop for the first time I got goosebumps on my back and became a Zappa-fan until this day. Really like your work

This is IMO his finest track and for most Zappa fans his signature song. What I like is that he puts instruments together that are never put together before in the way he does it, and he changes "feels" and tempos in different passages in the track.

One of Zappa’s absolute best. It’s just such a goddamn joyous-sounding and perfectly-arranged piece of music. And it’s the perfect showcase of Ian Underwood’s talents. He plays all the woodwinds and keys on this song. That’s one of my favorite things about Zappa: he was always quick to show off his guitar virtuosity, and he had a massive ego, and yet he would still do songs like this one where he took a backseat and let the other amazing musicians with whom he worked have the chance to take center stage. And then you have Shuggie Otis doing some impressive work on the bass as well. Hot Rats is just an amazing album altogether and- quite possibly- the best album Zappa ever put out.

There are several versions of Peaches floating around multiple albums. This one had a few Mothers on it but also some Jazz session musicians.

Besides the many album versions Peaches ended many concerts - or at least was included. I think I heard him some four times live from 1973 to the mid 80s and I guess the song occurred every concert - but I'm not sure. Its a long time since!

This is included in almost every live set Frank did in concert. It was one of his favorites to perform. I never saw a full Zappa concert but I stumbled into a sound check and watched the band for about 20 minutes. They played this song.

As for the meaning of the name "Peaches en Regalia" the story I heard was while staying in a hotel Frank received a fruit basket which contained peaches. As the sun shined on the peaches in their fancy basket he was inspired. Thus the name.

Frank has a slew of food songs over the years. Call Any Vegetable, The Gumbo Variations, Electric Aunt Jemima, Duke of Prunes are all fun. Frank took much of his music from everyday life: his Conceptual Continuity. Social mores/religion/politics/sex/life on the road, it's all there. He saw his life, and all life as music - the big vibration.

The best adjective I have for this song is 'majestic'. It is an iconic anthem. It's like Zappa is saying: "Oh, you think that song is good? Okay, hold my beer and listen to this. Then we'll talk."

One thing to remember is that Frank used recurring themes is his music, he has musical touch stones, and there are a couple in this song. A lot of them are established on this and earlier albums.

This is my ringtone, but I use the version from the first 3-inch CD in the world relesed in 1987. A cover of the piece, recorded by Zappa Plays Zappa (including Zappa's son Dweezil and former Zappa alumni Steve Vai and Napoleon Murphy Brock), won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in February 2009.

The Hot Rats album was dedicated to his first son Dweezil, and I always felt the opening song on the album reflected how happy that made him. You can't write a song this beautiful in a bad mood! ;-) It is also a song that translates very well into an orchestral piece, and the clip I am attaching to this reaction is a small ensemble performing it. It is hard to compose timeless music, but Frank could time and again. It always sounds fresh and never dated, cuz it's ZAPPA! Using a myriad of sounds to create an experience that rocks. Classic.

For us that have followed Frank over the years it was like Christmas when The Hot Rats Sessions was released, a 6 CD record recorded at the Hot Rats Sessions. The first record is mostly recordings that later became Peaches En Regalia. Great to follow how he works. And a lot of the recordings at the session later bacame other songs on other albums.

My favorite song on the album is The Gumbo Variations. I listen to it while mowing, the lawn and while driving alone. (My wife doesn't care for it as much as I do.) And after watching your comment on this song being to short, The Gumbo Variations is a lot longer.

gumbo is rock and jazz solutions or resolutions that every one was trying to solve in those days...so the freedom of improve in a rock square format...Frank resolved it early along with mahavishnu and Miles.

Paul Shaffer and the band used to play this a lot on Letterman when they would break for commercials. You would hear the beginning going into the break and the end when they would come out.

This is the first Zappa song I heard! Way back in 1970, when we finally got FM (and a whole new musical world away from AM's top 40) the Spitz and Peebles show on WRTC used this to open & close their show... had to call and find out what it was... "It's Zappa, kid - go out and get some" which of course I did. Forever grateful~

In Jr. high I liked the "silly" and 'weird" songs, but then our bass player showed up one day with "Hot Rats" and said, "you have to hear this". We got high, listened, and got blown away TOTALLY. I realized Frank's compositional genius with this album.

"Peaches En Regalia" was one of a bunch of Zappa songs that were featured in the soundtrack of the '90s animated series Duckman. Dan, maybe you heard it there? Also, Dweezil Zappa voiced the character Ajax (Duckman's son). Edgy fun show. Worth checking out.

My first ever FZ, Gr. 10 art class. Always wanted to chat up Peaches, maybe get her to shed some of that cumbersome, uncomfortably warm - I'm guessing - Regalia. Love the tidbit about conversational cadences; seems so clear, makes more sense of his dizzying phrases, love his odd and interesting choices of harmony, counterpoink(sic!), totally cinematic, maybe Carl Stalling-esque accompaniment to imagined onscreen lunacy with imperial elements. pure seminal Frank.

Tonight show - Jay Leno - Kevin Eubanks and his band played Peaches a few times if I'm not mistaken, but that was in the 90s. He played several Zappa tunes, so I'm not 100% sure

I remember reading that Peaches en Regalia was a menu item Frank saw in some restaurant. 'En regalia' means with all the trimmings or lots of extras. So is it as simple as peaches with everything on them? Can't remember where I read this though. However, it all depends on what the 'peaches' are, I guess.

Never really cared much for this track. As a huge Zappa fan, I clearly appreciate the incredible talent that went into making it. Personally, I prefer The Gumbo Variations which might be coming up in the near future.

Frank was a percussionist who played the guitar. Listen to Edgard Varese' and you will see where Frank got his rhythm from.

The end of horns for Frank (interestingly, at the same time James Brown switched out horns for Bootsy, his brother Phelps Collins, and a guitar-driven sound). This album rubbed countless of his fans the wrong way at the time, though in retrospect simply sounds like yet another of Frank's demonstrations of genre mastery, this time more (or closer to) straight-ahead jazz. Little-Remembered Fun Fact: Peaches En Regalia served as outro music during Saturday Night Live's first (i.e., best) season, played over the fade-outs at the end of sketches and leading into commercial breaks. Love you guys.

Ah yes, Hot Rats was the first Zappa album I ever bought. With the exception of Peaches en Regalia I was actually not very happy with the album back then. I was about 16 and just started discovering Zappa from his more comical songs I've heard on Dr. Demento. Unfortunately there's not a lot of comedy on Hot Rats. :D I've always considered Peaches en Regalia to be one of those great Zappa songs to introduce others to Zappa. It's not too "out there" and it's a very beautiful uplifting happy melody that it's hard for people to not enjoy it. Save "Help I'm A Rock" for later and start out with Zappa songs like Peaches!

One of my fav Zappa songs off a great album "Hot Rats". I've always wondered how many people who came after Zappa were influenced by this album. It was 1969 so this was before all the groups that came later in the 70's. In particular I wonder if Steely Dan was picking up on this stuff. Glad you found it. Peaches in Regalia would loosely translate into peaches in Royal costumes. Regalia being a word that refers to all the official royal costumes worn by royalty at special events. Like in England when the have a royal wedding everyone dresses in traditional "regalia" that they wouldn't wear on any other occassion. It can also mean just any clothing that is very dressy or formal and traditional. So, peaches in Royal Garb??

Great reaction! Have you guys done Trouble Everyday off of the Freak Out album? Either the Freak Out album version or the Token of His Extreme live album are fantastic. I prefer live version as it is funky and has a tasteful but far out solo by frank. George Duke is on keyboards in the live version as well. I hope you guys do this song soon!

On Spotify, you can find The Hot Rats Sessions which include variations and the rehearsals. You might not want to sit through all 7 hours of it, but you can hear how this piece was constructed under Frank's direction, and it's really fascinating - I think, as musicians, you'll love it!
