The Story Behind The Album And The Why: In this point of time, Frank had recently (1979) won a legal dispute against Warner Brothers Records that awarded him not only a hefty sum of financial compensation but also ALL of his recorded output stored in Warner Brothers safe, which included the material he had recorded for Verve which WB had bought back in 1970. Essentially, the money was used to build his home studio (named The Utility Muffin Research Kitchen or UMRK for short); founded his own record label initially called Zappa Records but shortly thereafter became Barking Pumpkin Records; and he fitted the basement of his home into a recording vault. Another important detail to know is that Frank had, since the early 70's, been recording practically all his live performances. The Albums: Initially three separate albums 1. Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar; 2. Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar Some More & 3. The Return of the Son of Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar sold by mail order only because Frank was certain that only a minute portion of the American market would be interested in purchasing these recordings; probably only musicians. For the European market, he simplified it as a 3 album box set under the name Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar. The box set began to be imported in America from Europa so Frank withdrew the three single album format that same year and only the box set remains, which was generally preferred by fans anyway. The material in these recordings are the guitar solos section of many of his more popular compositions, all played live mostly in 1979 (there are very few tracks played as early as 1976). It has been widely circulated that the three Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar titles are taken from different performances of Inca Roads. In a nutshell, that's it.

The story about A Pound for a Brown on the Bus is when the Mothers were touring England, Jim Black was bet a a pound to pull a brown (old name for mooning) out the tour bus.

Another tune from this triple album set is "Canarsie" just as spacey as this one. PS: On planet Canarsie everyone looks the same.

The "Play your guitar" albums were improvisation. Solo sections culled from concerts.

The logical next step is "Black Napkins" of Zoot Allures. It's a sinnister heavy hitter. Must, imho, listen to the original studio version for full effect

Among Zappa's guitar playing, I like this one next to Trying to Play a Solo with These Guys Is Like Trying to Grow a Watermelon in Easter Hay and The Muffin Man.

@@Frunobulax74 No, the official name is "Playing A Guitar Solo With This Band Is Like Trying To Grow A Watermelon In Easter Hay."

@@ZappafansAchilles- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you must own an extremely rare copy of the Joe's Garage album. Frank said that was the original title inspiration, but the song was never officially released as such.

Pink Napkins is the solo within Black Napkins. Frank just titled the solo itself, without the main body of Black Napkins, as such.

By a million miles. Maybe there is still 'an extended version" floating in his vault somewhere.

@@marcvanderiet5592 Black Napkins lasted 17 minutes in that gig. The solo known as Pink Napkins was much longer than this "snippet" for sure. There is audio of the entire concert here on YT. Just look up Zappa Feb. 17, 1977.

One recommendation I can say is doing your reactions after the song. At least, maybe for Zappa's music. It feels weird when you interrupt it. No offense whatsoever, though 👍
