If I remember right, in an interview Zappa specifically mentioned Ruth Underwood and George Duke (among other) as examples of who this song is referring to. Basically after spending almost 10 years with original crazed Mothers, orgies with Flo & Eddie-era Mothers (whom Duke was briefly a member of), suddenly his band members were now more scholarly music school 'serious' types who would rather play chess and read instead of indulging in the crazed rock & roll road life that fueled/inspired Zappa. Well, he Frankly (heh heh) found then boring, so he wrote a song about them. Ouch! Classic Zappa.
@Peter-K

Give that man a cigar, but you know what? It was a badge of honor to have him write a song about a band member. Bozzio got Punky's Whips, Vai got Stevie's Spanking...I'm sure there are others but can't think of them off the top of my head... 🤘

Dan likes down to earth pop rock jazz groove. Its obvious. I'm the slime, torture never stops, call any vegetable, Most of the songs Dan grooves to ,is on Zoot allures and Sheik yer bouti, the two albums zappa fan fakers never request.If it gets too complicated, he gets irritated. Sifa completely checks out, if its too aberrated. Remember his reaction to city of tiny lights baby snakes? - "Frank can get down and dirty with the rest of them". I can actually compile a list of zappa songs, from 66 to 88, that would be Dans top 10! I already agree with his list ,so far. but he's got 6 more to go he hasn't heard yet.

@adamnealis
@adamnealis 2 года назад
From memory, this song is a reference to the people in the band for the Grand Wazoo tour. Apparently they were serious musicians who preferred to read a book in the evening or something. I remember once, I was listening to this song with an ex-girlfriend, who asked "what is the point of this song?", meaning the lyrics. She finished the question as the guitar solo began. So I said "it's an excuse for this solo."
@globextradingsystemsllc1740

Lyrics reference the Bedroom society, my children, which some of his band members were accustomed to living that life. It wasn't towards the band members, per se. More towards the actual cultural phenomenon of staying home in your p,j's, watching TV, lazy waiting for the sales at Woolworth! Frank couldn't get along with those type of individuals in the society, which amounted to the majority of americans. His band members were members of that club. Look at it today, Even worse. The only difference is that we're on our smart phones and computers,while the reality and News programs continuously play advertisements, to shop your ass off and save money now. Akin to the sealed tuna sandwich reference in 200 motels. Suburban america.

I was in the audience when they recorded Just Another Band From L.A. they played at the Harvey Mudd college in Clairmont Ca. Captain Beetfheart came out and played harp falling down drunk. Zappa had him physically removed from the stage and called him an asshole as they dragged him off of the stage. 😜

In 1967, paleontologist Leo P. Plas, Jr., identified an extinct mollusc in Nevada and named it Amaurotoma zappa with the motivation that, "The specific name, zappa, honors Frank Zappa".[211] In the 1980s, biologist Ed Murdy named a genus of gobiid fishes of New Guinea Zappa, with a species named Zappa confluentus.[212] Biologist Ferdinando Boero named a Californian jellyfish Phialella zappai (1987), noting that he had "pleasure in naming this species after the modern music composer".[213] Belgian biologists Bosmans and Bosselaers discovered in the early 1980s a Cameroonese spider, which they in 1994 named Pachygnatha zappa because "the ventral side of the abdomen of the female of this species strikingly resembles the artist's legendary moustache".[214] A gene of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis that causes urinary tract infections was in 1995 named zapA by three biologists from Maryland. In their scientific article, they "especially thank the late Frank Zappa for inspiration and assistance with genetic nomenclature".[215] Repeating regions of the genome of the human tumor virus KSHV were named frnk, vnct and zppa in 1996 by Yuan Chang and Patrick S. Moore who discovered the virus. Also, a 143 base pair repeat sequence occurring at two positions was named waka/jwka.[216]

I remember your very first Zappa reaction was Andy from this very same album which is extremely dear to me. I don't think there is a weal piece on it. And it contains my all time favorite Inca Roads. To this song, I think it's all the boring people that Frank seemed never to have had patience with. When this came out I was 15 and I liked all the hilarious voice noises and stuff like that. The lyrics were beyond me back then, of course. But I thought even then that it was more one of the fun songs than serious music like the rhythmical intricacies of Andy, for instance.

Perhaps it is simply a critique of people who lounge around the day in their pyjamas. Perhaps Frank was of the same old school opinion as myself - if you're out of bed and up, put some damn clothes on...please!

We're still working on some things, but we have a better layout figured out now. You'll see improvement next week :)

Zappa was mean. Lol! He is making fun of his musicians and forces them to play it.

In the dire danger of getting a lot of heat, I think this is one of his more boring solos. Even back in 1975, when I came across this record (which I adore, by the way), I always thought when is this guitar solo going to be over. Everything on that record is so entertaining, except this super boring guitar solo. That’s the only reason why I don’t care much for this track

6:12 college dropout, band leader, creative thinker meets college educated pianist in a jazz/classical duet. The former is, of course, Frank Zappa, but the latter is no less interesting George Duke. Go look him up, he explains how Zappa delicately got him out of his "shell".
