Zappa pushed his musicians to be better at playing his music, but he does the same with his listeners, always being open and curious, becoming better listeners by listening to his compositions .

I was a typical teen rock consumer in 1975 when Zappa music was introduced to me. After getting that taste of such different ideas and textures, pop music seemed trite to me. Through the classical influence in Frank's music, I've become more inclined to listen to 20th century avant-garde composers. You don't get that music education listening to the biggest hit pop music. I saw video of Frank on Dinah Shore show from 1979. Jan & Dean were on the program as well. They were huge in the 60s during the surf music days, along with Beach Boys, but by 1979 were just a footnote. I bet they were sitting there on the same program with Frank and thinking, "We're such frauds."

A LOT of the current rock stars of the day went to those Garrick Theater performances. Lennon, McCartney, Clapton, Hendrix. just to name a few. McCartney was especially enamored with Zappa. The Beatles took a major shift in songwriting thanks to the Influence of "Freak Out"...

Too many people misunderstood Frank as just a weird guy who sang funny or dirty songs. He was always composing. There are photos of him on a plane, script paper on his lap. Somebody asked him why he didn't take vacations. He said, "What am I going to do, sit on a beach and write music? All my stuff is here." Composer first and foremost. When he was in the wheelchair after being pushed from the stage in London, he spent that time writing the music and hiring a 20-piece orchestra to record it, as well as the next album, different but great. 9 months to the day after the London incident, he mounted a tour with that 20-piece orchestra. Any other "pop star" who went through that trauma would be eating handfuls of painkillers and staring off into space. Frank went right back to work. "The Present Day Composer Refuses To Die" -Edgard Varèse, but perfectly suited to Frank Zappa.

Hey Rory. Long time Zappa fan and significant Rory fan. I havent seen this documentary before. thanks. You know, the first half of this soundtrack of this covers many of the early Mothers albums that to my knowledge you haven't really reacted to even though you've done so much Zappa. Please try a side of "We're Only In It For the Money, "Uncle Meat" or even "Lumpy Gravy" . I think it'll fill in some gaps for you. The second half of the doc (from George Duke on) show that Zappa knew what he wanted but he also was able to see the talent in others that they didn't even know they had. Amazing mind.

I've said it before...it's a little of both. But... let's be honest....Zappa was a magnet for weird people. His fans, and his musicians... most of them...including me...are just not normal. It should also be said that sometimes his musicians were less than happy to be utilized in his way of...well utilizing. Sometimes, he would take some crazy thing that someone in his group did (or said)... and turn it into a song... and then make THAT PERSON sing that song about something embarrasing that they had done or said. Not all the musicians were big fans of Zappa doing that to them. lol.
