This is my attempt at my favourite Frank Zappa tune. It's by no means a note for note cover, just jammin'. The drums are custom made Shaw Percussion maple toms and kick, 8 ply 20X18, 6 ply 10X8 and 15X12 with a 13X6.5 Bubinga stave snare.
if you still playing 9 yrs later. Post more covers man. For people trying to learn through videos not drum books. This cover is exactly what i’m looking for you to learn this song
Seriously there are zero flaws. Not even any in the musicality of it. Amazing technical performance, groove, time, feel, creativity, just everything. PERFECTION!
Damn dude! I've been listening to Frank since I was four years old; never been able to figure this song out. Good chopping bro. You damn nailed it! I love it. KEEP IT COMING!
The original album, Overnight Sensation featured, I believe, drummer Ralph Humphrey, a very technical and IMHO underrated drummer. I wore out to copies of this album. Ahh 1973.
Wow Graham! Amazing job, the fact that you could even figure it out is amazing, but your performance is also fantastic. Such a great Zappa tune too. Coincidentally, this song has been stuck in my head for the past four days!
So glad your dad shared this link with me. Graham you are one fine drummer and the kit you are playing is excellent. Hats off to Shaw percussion and the music you and your family make.
Very nice work on a typically complex Zappa tune which is up there in my "favorites" list. You have a great ear and excellent, tight, succinct execution! Great job. I'm a fellow drummer and Zappa fan and have been for 48 years! Frank, his incredible bands and his drummers were a huge influence to me coming up from twelve years old to today! Keep the Zappa covers coming please! The Shaw drums sound excellent too by the way!
This deserves WAY more views. A zappa drum cover has got to be one of the more difficult choices. The drumming in his music is perfectly arranged! Major kudos to you man, keep rocking!
VERY fricken groovy Graham!! Now, with zero disrespect to Nadav Rogel here, quints or sexts don't really matter when you know where you're going and can dish out the chops to the '1' like that! :) Sometimes overlay covers can be a bit boring (perhaps predictable is the better term?) and it's nice to see someone interpret things a little differently, of course while remaining in context. Your cover was excellent!
o0Zappa0o Thanks so much!! I'm still kicking myself for missing those quints haha but yeah, I was just in the zone and feelin' it, the rest of that take felt so good it seemed a shame to toss it out over that. I really gotta do more of these, Yellow Snow Suite next? Fifty-fifty?
Man wtf how did you play it lol. I've always wondered whether Zappa drummers had a score or simply an intention given by Zappa and would basically improvise the most part.
Oh it's definitely still here and making noise on the regular! I'm actually doing quite a bit of session work from home for a few local artists. Also working on ideas for some instructional videos in the new year, so hopefully there will be some new stuff to check out soon!
