Detailed instructions for tying Floyd Franke's Shiner.
Recipe:
Hook: 6X- to 8X-long streamer hook (here a Mustad 3665A), sizes 4-10.
Underbody: White Uni-Stretch.
Overbody: Opal Mirage Tinsel, large.
Thread: Olive, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Belly: White bucktail, cleaned and stacked.
Throat: Silver Doctor blue saddle-hackle fibers.
Underwing: Light olive bucktail, cleaned and stacked.
Flash: 6 strands of Olive Krystal Flash.
Overwing: Olive brown bucktail, cleaned and stacked.
Eyes: Yellow and black nail polish.

Floyd Franke called this the Franke "Lake Erie Shiner." I learned how to tie this fly by watching Floyd tie it at the Catskill Fky Fishing Center & Museum, when he would spend the day demonstrating his marvelous tying skills. Floyd was a good friend and mentor. You've done this fly proud, Tim. Thank you.

Great tip on making your own fly tying eye's. Buying prefabricated eyes can get expensive. The way you do it the color combination are endless

Nice fly, when I get this house sold and get moved into the motor home I'll have to tie some. Too bad I can't right now, I'm leaving for the Manistee River in about an hour. Keep the good stuff coming.

I saw this years ago. He ties it a bit different but the fish could care less. He noticed a lavender cast on local shinners here in Ohio , hence the blue. His fly uses a lavender bucktail rather than blue for smallies. However, I do think Kingfisher blue is a trigger for steelhead. Think I will give it a shot this fall with blue

Tim, that is a good idea using nail polish for the eyes instead of model paint. I use Testors and the caps always stick to the bottles.

Great tutorial Tim. Lots of your "tips" throughout. In central NY emerald shiners are called "buckeye" minnows. I've seen pods of them swimming the rip rap shoreline, they're very sparkly and semi transparent with big eyes. I've had success with black over yellow over white with a red throat and big eyed hair wing streamers where I fish. I'll try Franke's pattern, maybe tied sparse to go with the semi transparency. You mentioned "trout spey", are you familiar with Steven Bird? He had a column in Flyfishing & Tying Journal on wet flies and runs a blog called Soft Hackle Journal. That's where I first heard of "trout spey". He ties some pretty sweet dabbler style wets he fishes on the swing. Thanks for great videos.

Another good tip with these painted heads… While the adhesive on the head is still soft and not yet cured, use the flat portion of a pair of needle nose pliers or large tweezers - that is, the non-serrated section of the jaws - to gently, “squish,“ the sides of the head, giving it a flattened profile. This gives you a bigger, flat area to apply the paint dots that make up the eyes. Thanks, Tim David Hutton Palmetto Fly in Fish South Carolina

Huh I never knew this had a name I’ve been tying them differently but they work well for steelhead bottom bouncing try a white and pink for salmon I promise it won’t disappoint

Is there any specific reason this would be tied on a downeye streamer hook rather than a spey hook? What would the benefit be?

I've had good luck with the Mickey Finn which is similar to this fly so I don't see why it wouldn't work

If there are emerald shiners anywhere about, this fly will work well. Trout, Steelhead, Salmon, Bass, Striped Bass it doesn't matter. You may want to adjust the type of hook and its size according to species.
