Brahms originally counted it as No. 7 and other publishers later counted it as No. 9. But this has been revised since 1978. Also, Breitkopf & Härtel, publisher of the symphony, considers it be No. 8. But surprisingly or not, the other counting is still often used, even on CDs or in concert programmes. 😊
