I think towards the end of the series (particularly, after Niles finally confessed his feelings for Daphne & even Roz was shipping them), they had kind of tempered their feud & if not become friends, at least came to an understanding & respected each other. Most shows would play that string until it breaks (or it goes off the air), rather than let relationships grow.
Roz and Niles were pretty much friends by this time. It was only his indifference to her, and his jibes in the first half of the show’s run which slowed down the friendship. They were pretty close by the end of the series. Roz didn’t need to sit vigil for him when he underwent heart surgery but she did. There were very few jibes between the two characters in the last couple of seasons.
Roz woulda always looked out for him I think even in the earlier seasons. Just because you don't get along doesn't mean you suddenly abandon people you know to a crisis. That's the difference between not getting along and actually loathing another person. Plus she has to work with Frasier. Its not gonna be great going forward to have to explain why you did nothing when he was on his way over.
In the closing segment, Niles brings the aprons back on hangers, cleaned and pressed, and proudly holds up a card case with his own supply of stirring straws.
Making "the last straw" a literal thing was a stroke of genius. I had never seen this done in a sitcom before this episode. Best line (and one of the best of the entire eleven years, for that matter) = 2:01 "This man's tips alone have probably paid for all the pot you'll ever smoke!"
This scene is so wonderfully written, but the kicker for me is the slow, gradual breakdown of Niles. He doesn’t go crazy, or fly into a panic, he just goes, sits down, gets naked, and tunes everything out. Panic attacks hit people differently and props to the writers for going this direction, not just because it’s better for the comedy gags, but also a little more honest.
I worked with a guy who had epileptic seizures. He would get completely quiet, then do an odd task, like take a box of kleenex, carefully open it completely, then remove all the kleenex, and carefully place them back exactly where they had been before. We would give him a Pepsi, he'd quietly drink it, and a few minutes later, he'd be fine. He was always a nice guy, pleasant to work with.
Roz really came through for Niles in this episode. Her actions demonstrates her unyielding loyalty to her friends. And Frasier really kept cool under pressure to see to his brother. Roz and Frasier make a really great team!
The funny undertone here is that Roz and Frasier bring the necessary experience to this situation: Frasier has dealt with his brother's flipouts, and Roz has helped shepherd plenty of naked drunks through the morning after.
@@captainvladmir7535 Exactly. As Frasier mentions, it wasn't the first time Niles had a panic attack. So, instinctively, Frasier kinda knew what was going on and knew how to deal with the situation.
Its a real testament to the actors and writers that something as simple as "its the last straw" could make me laugh so hard. DHP is fantastic. The timing and the delivery are so in sync
+Nate Robinson As I noticed that when I watched it, it would not surprise me if the changed a lot fo the script/sequences, just to fit that line in. Hahaha :P
This is one of my favorite Roz moments in the whole show! She doesn’t fully understand what’s going on, but she knows that her friend is in danger and takes immediate action to keep him safe. It’s worth noting that she’s able to keep an entire cafe full of people from calling the cops using nothing but her voice. You can tell people believe her act. And even before she goes full throttle, she tries to comfort Niles (she’s the one who orders his cappuccino and tries giving him her straw). Peri Gilpin really made this role!
@@Panwere36 hit the nail on the head. Roz was likeable because in the end all she was looking for was love, a genuine connection. She recognizes that in Niles, even though they are so different.
@@Snapepet "This was a bit before his surgery." His surgery was in Season 10, Episode 8: Rooms With A View. This clip is from Season 11, Episode 8: Murder Most Maris. (Interesting...both were the 8th episode of their season.)
@@Lewiss7423 You came here a month later just to have your troll moment. You offer nothing of substance regarding the show. Climb back under your bridge.
Trust me there's nothing worse than waking up naked with a bunch of cops standing around.......I bet! ROTFLMAO I love how they add that last line on to the scene, just brilliant
I love "Don't touch me"..... in fact I love everything about this scene. just BRILLIANT.... second favourite" you're not getting in my car like that" hilarious!!!
+lisvender It's great, how they portray the two psychiatrists in this manner, because it is fairly consistent with really psychology 'people.' They are generally very quirky, have many OCD's, and can have cerebral shut-downs where they basically lose their mind.
I understand that there are a fair number of psychiatrists/psychologists who go into the field in order to learn to deal with their own neuroses and such.
I love both Niles and Roz. Niles was a true comedic gem, and I loved how Roz became a friend to everyone in the family, not just Frasier. DHP and PG were wonderful in this show, as were all the main cast members.
I love how Roz and Niles always had an antagonistic friendship of sorts, but this scene proves that under the casual snipes Roz does genuinely care about his well-being, and how much she's grown to care for him since they first met
Love how Niles responds to Frasier’s hello with a laid back, “Hey..” Niles had never talked like that and you know something is wrong! 😂 DHP is amazing.
There's also that other episode that deals with Niles' nakedness. He discovered a nude beach, and was somehow talked into joining the others in their state of disrobe. He's so chill and laid back, his anxiety and stodginess gone with the wind... I forget how it happens, but he eventually returns to his usual reality, including his normal tense personality.
Waiter: “I’m calling the cops.” Roz: “The hell you are. This man’s tips alone have probably paid for the pot you’ll ever smoke!” Hahahahaha I laughed so hard
Great Line. Love Roz protecting Niles. For me, this show had the wittiest and funniest lines, and the actors were so on point. Great Show. PEACE to ALL.
@@jenpeterson3712 I watch these clips over and over when I need a laugh, and Frasier clips on RU-vid are always good for a laugh. One of my favorites is Niles and Daphne with Alan Cumming as the yoga instructor. Hilarious!! PEACE.
Other comments already said it but I also love how Roz is so protective of Niles. They’ve been through so much and despite arguing a lot they’re there for each other. Like siblings
@alphanerd7221 Not the best choice of words, but Frasier did talk Niles away from the situation (the cafe & all the onlookers). No need to be so argumentative.
How very different this scene would have played out 20 years later. Every customer in the Café would have had his or her mobile device out and there would have been live streams from Niles' breakdown before Frasier had any chance of talking to him. And Niles career would've been over with the videos of this incident going viral and being on the internet forever. Oh times and people have change a lot, not everything for the better
Every era comes with its advantages and disadvantages. Social media allows people to reach out to each other, all across the world. And it goes beyond technology. Forty years ago, an actor like David Hyde Pierce would have had to hide his being gay from the public at the risk of getting blacklisted, jailed, even killed.
@De St Hide from you maybe. Tom Hardy is constantly hounded about his unspecified sexual orientation by people who're obsessed with acquiring celebrities for their team. Frankly, it's none of their business.
Sterling Ross Yeah! You're absolutly right! I watched that show just bc Kelsey Grammer. I really like him. But Niles became my fav character, bc I like the way he is. DHP played him very well. Now he's one of my fav actors too ;D Thank you for that amazing show♥Kelsey Grammer and DHP in one show...best couple ever (so that's my opinion ^^)
Honestly the directors of Frasier definitely made the best choice of the show's history casting David Hyde Pierce as "Niles". Originally it was just because he looked eerily like Kelsey Grammer in the early 80's (first appearance as Dr. Frasier Crane in Cheers), but in very short time it became so evident that Pierce portrayed Niles's character perfectly, with an exacting amount of lovable pretension, and almost stole the show from Grammer. In all honesty, the most heartwarming part of the show in my opinion is when Niles and Daphne finally become a couple.
I like Niles, Roz, and Bebe the best. DHP had impeccable timing. Peri Gilpin was super natural. And Harriet Harris as Bebe Glazer is just a flawless character actress. She could do a one woman show. Jane and John were also charming, and Kelsey carried the show well, but the first 3 made me laugh the most.
Roz is just awesome in this scene. "The Hell you are! This mans tips alone have probably paid for all the pot you'll ever smoke. Just back off cowboy!" Just brilliant!
A brilliant scene, and it really does show off how far the Roz and Niles relationship has come! From mutual loathing to genuine friendship -- it's pretty nice.
Amazing how this is hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. I love Roz so much❤ She is a badass with a mother's heart❤ They had such an INCREDIBLE cast of actors on Frasier.
As funny and comical as this moment is, it actually hits on a more deeper meaning in showing that no matter how together and successful a person can seem on the outside to others, they too, are people who are human and have fragile moments where we all get to those low vulnerable moments where we really depend and can use some love and support and understanding from somewhere outside of ourselves to find that magic person or moment that will help to pull us out of our despair.
Amen. To add to your beautiful statement. To understand what someone is going through. You have to know the things that have affected them and how they got there in the first place. The sad thing is that a lot of people do not realize that we are all connected in this world and NO ONE is immune to misery, misfortune, or tragedy.
This is a testament to all the characters, Niles being a gentleman paying for their coffee, Roz being the quippy bad ass and Frasier keeping kalm in psychiatric crisis
+Kyle Butler the great thing is thought....we have now 2 broke girls which is just shitty sex pun after sex pun....then you watch shows like Frasier,Seinfeld,friends,cheers... and you get to watch all those seasons and laugh at true comedy.
+MovieHound17 yeah I know what you mean I've started watching blackadder again and its amazing. Those 4 are my fav american comedies plus parks and recs.
Lucy Hunt thats a great one 2...The Office is another gem...It lost a lil steam after steve carell left, but was STILL wa funnier than some shit out now.
I *love* Roz here. She and Niles always had their differences but man, she really went to the wire for him here. Frasier had some of the best character growth on TV, while it always retained consistency.
One of Niles' finest moments (together with his Flamenco dance when Elvis Costello guest stars as Nervosa's new live performer). This shows never gets boring.
"I'm calling the cops!" Roz - "The Hell you are!!!! This man's Tips alone will probably pay for all the Pot you'll EVER SMOKE!!!!" This is by far MY FAVORITE EPISODE of 'Frasier'!!!!
Sometimes when comedy is predictable it's still funny. When I first saw this, as soon as he asked for a straw and she said "that's the last one" I knew he would fall apart, but it was still hilarious when he did.
I feel like a lot of us can relate to this. The last straw when you just lose it and want to do something as crazy as Niles did but most of us don't have the courage to act as rash
After Niles got with Daphne, Roz softened up to Niles a bit. Remember how astounded she was to learn from Daphne how great of a lover he was? I think she saw him differently in more than one way. Roz had a hidden romantic side that was probably more than happy to see true love win the day...
I love how Ross sounds like she's robbing the place, and the way she is pointing her Last Straw at them , or whatever it is she's holding, as they walk out, and during most of the scene
