In this episode of Fratello Talks, the team (Lex, Ignacio, and RJ) talks about Japanese watchmaking. From Citizen to Grand Seiko, we talk about the craftsmanship in Japanese watches, the Zaratsu polishing method, the movements, and what we've seen during our visits to Japan. Japanese watchmaking is or has become synonymous with quality.

It's funny to hear you guys talk in terms of needing to "overcome that it's not a Swiss watch". Quite frankly, when buying my Cartier, I had to overcome the notion that I'm spending that much money on a watch that is not Japanese. And after almost a year of ownership, next to two Grand Seiko's and a Citizen Chronomaster, I can honestly say that Richemont's offerings can't hold a candle to Japanese watches. That said, when RJ says the dial is always the main thing about a Grand Seiko watch.... I've got two with exceedingly simple dials, almost to the point of being spartan. In this case, it's definitely the indices and hands that make the watch. The indices are some of the best I've seen in the business. They sparkle like nothing else.

I respectfully disagree with the statement that “Richemont’s offerings can’t hold a candle to Japanese watches.” It seems like an overcorrection. And, quite frankly, just contrarian. So, instead of saying, “the underdog is better,” I would say, “the underdog is just as good.” I own a Lange, which is owned by Richemont. Which might be why I’m responding to your comment lol

Japanese products have enabled me to have a great business for 40years, importing from TEC, and Towa both excellent Japanese companies.

A great episode. Some very valid points that you all made on this one. It's great to hear a mention of G-Shock as well so not just a focus on mechanical or electro mechanical (Spring Drive) but the others as well. I'm fortunate enough to own manual wind, automatic, quartz and digital watches and they all have a purpose and all get wrist time. Personally I'm not too bothered about the made in (add country here) label. My wrist check for today is my old G-Shock 5610 watch that goes with me for most of my medical appointments. Tomorrow I'll probably have a Swiss watch on my wrist, earlier this week I enjoyed my Nomos Ludwig 36 for a time.

I love Japanese - watches (especially Seiko: King Seiko, Lord Marvel, Lord Matic, Grand Quartz, King Quartz, ...) - cars (Subaru!) - knives. And I am German.

Had a business meeting with a watch aficionado guy in UK wearing an Aquanaut. That one was briefly mentioned, but we spent ten good minutes talking about the Grand Seiko SBGN003 I was rocking. ´nuff said.

Fender guitars made in Japan are better quality than American made ones.

Barcelona chairs always look cool and comfortable, just not when you sit on them.

Whoa. I think this describes corporate office furniture. And I don’t mean office chairs that are at people’s desks; I mean the furniture in common areas in the office. They all look neat, but are uncomfortable as hell when you actually sit in them.
