At 61 years-old it's with a great sadness that I have to say, less than a week ago I had my last ever Fray Bentos pie. I think it was the steak-only one. They say that things look smaller than you remember because you yourself were little well, I still bought FB pies even after I got married and could easily share one with my wife well into our marriage. These are genuinely tiny now! Again, another one of those manufacturers who think we are all gullible idiots who wont notice the gradual decline in size and content, Quality Street! we're all looking at you, too! I adore FB pastry, for me it is my favourite pastry, beating any other I've ever tasted by a country mile. Although I was happy to eat the uncooked stuff at the bottom, I still wanted to have the whole piece of pastry, cooked. To achieve this I would cook the pie for 10 minutes, take it out and off the can and lay it upside down on the tinfoil. It was amazing to have the pastry fully cooked. The last pie I mentioned was nothing more than gravy with straggly bits of beef fibre, not one single beef square piece! If I ever buy an FB Pie again it'll be to open it, take out the pastry, cook as mentioned earlier and serve it with some other foodstuff. My advice to the folks at Fray Bentos are that you have three options: 1) Keep the status Quo, frizzle and die 2) Bite the bullet and up your game, fix the filling issues and try the market again 3) Sell the pastry Wow! my longest ever RU-vid comment! Keep up the great work, OP!
I'm sorry for your loss pal.... You're absolutely right about the companies making smaller rations and hoping we're gullible idiots...RIP Frey Bentos 💪👍
@@LOrealHardly You are right about the sizes, everything is getting smaller and the £££££are getting greater. I find the Fray Bento's pies cook much better in the Air Fryer although personally I quite like the soggy pastry.
Lmao yea one of reasons I’d not buy this at all.. why can’t they just make it a ring pull ? Id probably only eat this drunk and I could imagine the struggle trying get damn thing open
I bought an electric tin opener just for these pies. And I've only bought one once , but it whipped the lid off. Can't complain though, what £1- £1.50. I wouldn't even put it on a plate.
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. I have seen them in a bargain store and wondered if they were worth it. Even though they are cheap, I think around £1.25 on special offer, you can see by ingredients that are listed on the can that only 20% of the contents of the can is what you want in a breakfast: 5% Cumberland sausage, 5% bacon, 3% black pudding, and 7% beans. After pre-heating the oven, opening the can, baking it for 25 minutes, getting it out on a plate without burning yourself I would feel as though my time could have been better spent grilling some sausages, heating through some beans and scrambling some eggs. Thanks BFG for saving me going through the final disappointment of preparing it and finding it not worth the bother.
When it started I was thinking looks nice but when it was on the plate I will give it a miss, maybe taste better in you eat it out the tin to save on washing up 😂 with half a bottle ketchup 😂
Fray Bentos is the name of a city in Uruguay 🇺🇾🇺🇾🇺🇾🇺🇾, my country. This meat based product was made for export from mid xix century. During ww2, it was very appreciated by soldiers. The Anglo slaughter house, was called the "kitchen of the world" and closed in 1960s. Now it is a museum, located 2km from Fray Bentos downtown, surrounded by a tipical british industrial neighbourghood
Absolutely brilliant. Fantastic comment. You must be English am I correct? You live in Uruguay also. I good for well and all the best. Have a good weekend, Gareth 😋👍👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy I was born and live in Uruguay, but I am a great fan of british culture and history. Even my country was the creation (as a neutral state between Argentina and Brazil) of an english diplomat, Lord Ponsomby. Great weekend for you too!!!
Correct in my visit to Argentina in 2007, visited that area. Fray Bentos Corn Beef...aka bully beef to the troops, I still eat in a sandwich with mustard pickles like you Picallili.
Lol 😆 was just talking about fray bentos pies with some work colleagues the other day . I was born in 1960 and we lived out of tins in the '70s . Thanks for the memory , subbed 👋🏴❤️
I used to really love their steak and kidney pies. I've bought a couple recently, but never again. You used to get big chunks of beef but now it's just gravy with micro pieces of meat.
I used to eat Fray Bentos pies when I was a child in the 50s and 60s. I’m 70 now. I might try one to see if I still like them. On the subject of sauce I remember that I used to have Chop Sauce. I haven’t seen it for years. Can you still buy it?
I used to love Fray Bentos pies. I was a fan of the steak and ale pie, don't know if they still make them. It's a shame that this one fell short. Thanks for trying it Gareth, so I don't have to.
These just remind me of the shopping bags my grandad would give me upon my return to uni. I still have a full English in a tin in my cupboard he gave me in 2003
66squeaky *I've had the mince & onion & a vegetable balti & they're nice. I'd buy those again. I think the chicken one I had ages ago too & think was nice. Sounds like don't waste your money on this breakfast one tho, lol🤣🙈*
As a Kiwi I was shocked to see tinned pies when I came to the UK,but I had to try one just to see if it was as bad as I expected. They werent! They were far far worse than I could've imagined,an affront to pie makers all over the world,it wasn't just the soggy, slimy bottom but the meat was barely recognisable as any sort of meat I'd seen or tasted before. Probably great if you're lying in a mud filled trench in WW1,but definitely more value to lob them at the Germans.
Fray Bentos have just started selling tinned Kiwi pie with cashmere goat gravy, better than tinned kobe beef.I love tinned pies and guess what my favourit film is Tin Tin of course.
We bought a variety of these just after Covid19 was announced, we place them in boxes to use a Emergency food. ...And as you do you getting wounder what they taste like, so we cooked one, Cheese and Onion Pie, yep, they did not disappoint, AWFUL, soggy bottom and all. They were the first thing to go in the tip, the rest went to the homeless centre, I didn't think they would appreciate such crap!....you're a brave man to eat this crap....love you videos....have watched 4 now.....including the 16 oz Iceland Steak!
i had them as a student 30 years ago ! I am sure i liked the mince and onion one the best. Back then they were 2 for £1.00. great value. But now i would never even consider one . Great honest Review you could see on your face it was not nice lol !!!
I knew it was going to be horrible the instant he tried that first morsel of black pudding. Within less than 2 seconds his expression changed and I just knew the game was up for Fray Bentos. I'm amazed that most supermarkets still stock these. I did quite like the chicken and mushroom one, but I really don't expect to be buying any more. But obviously there must be loads of people who like these pies.
@@elvishards8161 Crikey! That would have to be some emergency! Power out? Oops, no, we need an oven. Flooded out? Nah, oven knee-deep in water. Mother-in-law popped by for lunch? Aha! Problem solved.
These pies are made about 8 miles from me. They are now made by Baxters famous for soup, pickled beetroot and jam in Fouchabers a little village in Moray north east Scotland. They bought over the Fray Bentos name and had the machines that made them shipped over from I think Argintina a few years back.
Good review! I always thought there was more taste in Fray Bentos pastry than in the pie filling - I still eat them from time to time though :-) Cheers!
Tried one couple weeks back, I too was disappointed, didn’t finish it thought it was horrible. Not a patch on the Full Monty or All day breakfast in the tins
I thought what is going to be fun about watching some guy trying food....I bloody love your show, you deserve even more subs. Brilliant mate, I'm binge watching 👍
Fray Bentos steak and kidney pudding . I stock up on them when I’m in the UK and take them back to Vietnam. I get some very strange looks going through customs.
@@susanlee2835 I love German shepherds, they make a delicious Shepard’s pie , and sausage dogs make great sausages . But best of all is the Yorkshire terrier they make great Yorkshire pudding‘s.
Interesting fact on fray bentos. They were supplying the tinned meats to the Russian army during world war 2. (Russian conveys). Russian soldiers upon opening the tin would joke ‘they were opening the second front’.
I also love the fray Bentos Pies ...and that delicious soggy pastry. I also heard the Steak and Kidney ones are OK for vegetarians. :) Keep up the good reviews .....new subscriber here
Did you know Fray Bentos is a place in Uruguay? This was where the original meat processing plant was. The place was finally closed in 1979 after over 100 years of operation. Three generations may have worked there their entire lives.
Never even knew the all day breakfast ones existed never seen them before by the look of it I don't think even reggae reggae sauce could save this , at least it's got the nice pastry like the other ones 😬👍
Many years ago (about 10+) I saw the Fray Bentos Steak pies in Sainsbury's for about £1.50 and in Poundland for 99p. Bought one of each so I could compare them. The Sainsbury one had 8 steak chunks in it but the poundland one only had 4. Both weighed exactly the same according to the tin. That set me off on a bit of a checking spree comparing weights of tins etc between major supermarkets and bargain shops. Found that in general the supermarkets worked out cheaper when you did a cost/g comparison (the bargain shops nearly always had smaller containers). Your right about the soggy bit of pastry being the best bit though - I absolutely love it!
Was thinking (h-mmm) because the pastry is SO good and the filling SO cxxp, you could heat up a tin of the Hunger Breaks All Day Breakfast slosh and put it with the pie base. Well, just an idea!!!!!
I remember these tinned pies from the 1960’s as a child although it would’ve been steak & kidney back in the day ( maybe you’d prefer that one). I remember they were always a bit lacking in filling & the pastry would be slightly under cooked & soggy lol..ahh the memories come flooding back! I really enjoy your reviews, well done. I’ve subbed & am currently binge watching your videos 😎👍
I was born in 1960 and remember these pies around 1970 . Mum worked full time as a nurse so most of our meals came out of tins because she had limited time to shop . The steak one is the one I remember 👍👋❤️
@@99fruitbat94 Yes, I definitely remember the steak ones. I also remember these pies in the early 1980’s when I was first married, very convenient when you are pushed for time & patience as a new Mum😁 good to know they are still going strong albeit a bit different from the ones we remember💪
I would put loads of ecnona hot pepper sauce over the beans and that lol ,or Carolina reaper. Actually Levi roots is good stuff too. The times I reach for the pepper sauce!
I used to get these years ago when I was hard up....they had a bit more filling back then and my fave was steak n kidney and minced beef and onion. Got one a couple years back for nostalgias sake and it was like pastry with gravy and 2 chunks of meat...proper waste of time. Just to add, my old mum would buy the steak n kidney puddings and they would literally be full of meat....they've got next to nowt in them now. Not worth buying in my book!
Great story, thank you for sharing that with us. I had them when I was young as a kid. Same as you. Steak and kidney all the time. Thank you, all the best pal, Gareth 👍👍
Gareth when I was a teenager in the 70s Fray Bentos pies were deep filled with goodness alas since the 90s they have declined dramatically in flavour and content as you have proved Keep smiling and I see you on your next one
Looks gorgeous. I haven't seen the All Day Breakfast one in the shops, but I will hunt one down to try, online at Amazon or EBay if I cannot find one in supermarket.
Have you ever had an 'Italian style' pasty? Shop near me used to make them they had basil & tomatoes and olives & flagolet beans & parmesan in. Very tasty.
@@neave789 I always used to have to work sat, sun & bank holidays too btw, and on less than & on only minimum wage too. You on minimum wage? The Fray Bentos vegetable balti one was quite nice btw, I'd buy that one again. I'd avoid wasting your money on this breakfast one tho by the sounds of it, lol;)
Ah Come On Gareth Play The Game...,Buttered Bread To Mop Up All That Sauce Left Inside The Tin...,As For The Pie...,Well I've Had 3 Fray Bentos Pies Since 2019 And I've Thrown Each One Of Them In The Bin Because I Couldn't Get Into The Bloody Tins 🙄😂
Just found your video today. Brilliant had me laughing loads. Remember my dad having Fray Bentos pies in the 70s. Have subbed 👍 Will watch some more now. 😊
cook four steak and kidney frey bentos pies and remove all the pastry tops then leave the tops to one side, empty all the meat and gravy contents from all four pies into a large bowl then place one of the pastry tops on top of the meat in your bowl and that's about the right ratio of pastry to meat in my opinion...what you do with the other three pastry tops is up to you !
All Bentos tinned pies are lovely but cant open the damn things , on my third so called quality tin opener , everyone has bent or twisted , Any ideas on makes
Don't fancy one of these but for the Fray Bentos pies you do bake when the 25 mins are up take the pie out of the oven, lift off the top layer which is crunchy and put aside, then put the pie back in oven to cook the next layer, leave in for another 15/20 mins or until crunchy then add the first layer and return to over for 5/10 mins. It takes ages but is worth it as it's absolutely cooked through with no soggy pastry. Me and my kids loved these when I was hard up and even now I can enjoy them.
I also used to love Frey-Bentos pies - Steak and Kidney- in the '70s - I don't think I have had one since but I agree that the stodgy pastry is a real comfort food for some reason. I must try one again. It's like a guilty secret.
Hi, I love that puff pastry,I actually have the cheese and onion fray bentos pie. I'm so pleased you showed this,it sounded great being an all day breakfast, I was gonna get some for my sons to have before work, but now I see the beans I know one definitely couldn't eat it, he has always hated beans even from toddler age, they made him heave. X
My DH loves Fray Bentos pies so I was excited when I saw your taste-testing on RU-vid. I think Fray Bentos Company has really let the side down, here. Crispy top looks the same - but I really expected to see an actual sausage, slice of black pud and maybe a slice of bacon taken from an actual rasher- my joy was, alas, short-lived! The FB folks should be charged under the Trades Description Act. In no way could that mess of pottage be described as 'breakfast' although it could be described as such with another word added to the description- that word is DOG'S BREAKFAST! It looked like something the dog heaved up on the pavement. I shudder to think what really went into those tiny cubes of immitation 'meat 'products It was sad to see the look of disappointment on your face. At least you have saved me the disappointment and the cost because I would have bought one if I'd seen it in Home Bargains. Keep up the good work - saving people money, disappointment and gurgling guts.
I watch The Wolfe Pit when Larry ate a Fray Bentos pie for the first time. He threw away the gooey pastry bit by mistake, thinking it wasn't supposed to be like that! Great channel, subbed.
Hi bald foodie guy, my husband usually likes things like that and decided to try it for the first time last weekend, he also said it was OK but won't be buying it again. Thanks for sharing x
@@BaldFoodieGuy No Gareth .... Fray Bentos did small and large Steak Puddings in a tin .... Pudding shaped of course .... Suet pastry .... I loved those but not had one for decades .... Don't know if they are still available ? ...
Even tho I don't like fray bentos pie's I can honestly say I'm actually enjoying watching you eat it. Il give you something nice to try, in aldi they have in the fridge herby flavoured potatoes in a rectangular shape box and there in a sealed package inside and smothered in a rich herby sauce, cook the potatoes, place the potatoes on the plate leaving the sauce in the bag, add the sauce to a tin of drained tuna in water, use half of tin for more flavour, its absolutely gorgeous, please try this 👍 1 x potatoes in rich herby sauce from fridge 1 x tin of tuna Cheap and delicious 😋
I still have them now steak and kidney and the minced beef and onion. Liked them but always thought they were tight with the filling. One of those and some fresh bread yum
I used to love a Fray Bentos pie , the pastry was amazing, it was just so flaky. Nowadays I wouldn’t go anywhere near the things, such poor quality ingredients!
I lived on fray bentos as a student. Fancied one a few years ago for nostalgias sake, and was upset to find it was all grissle. Lesson learnt. Never go back, the memory will keep you warmer.
Hi just came across your channel great review of that pie love these l haven't had one in years as my wife thinks the pastry is to soggy l saw a chicken curry one the other day in asda have you done a review on that one l would love to know ?
Hi Adrian, thank you very much for joining the channel. No I've not had that one before. They are quite new out arnt they? Glad you like them pal. All the best pal Gareth 👍
I got a Fray Bentos chicken pie. The pastry was cooked on the top but most of it was still raw and slimy [yuk] I took the pastry off, turned it over and cooked it on a tray for a further 10 minutes, it was much better then. There was more chicken on a chickens wing. The make it 75% crust and 25% filling. I know they only cost a quid but I would rather pay £2-3 for a pie with 25% pastry nd 75% chicken.
Only found your channel a couple of days ago mate - loving your work and natural, cheerful presentation style - great morale boost every time. Keep it up the good work and all the best.
