Fray Bentos a new high tech weapon at the time was a Mark IV tank that got stuck on the enemy lines. The crew battled for several days bravely defending from the German onslaught while under fire from the British who were trying to stop the tank falling into German hands.
Captain Donald Richardson, despite being injured, bravely led his crew to safety and they became the most highly decorated tank crew at the time. In recent years Fray Bentos' last stand became the inspiration for the story Fury.
Huge thanks to ‪@thetankmuseum‬ for the footage and the photos at the end of this film.
Please let us know in the comments what you think of the video.
Thanks also to Benson's Grandpa for sponsoring this us on Patreon. He appears as an extra in this video. If you too would like to be an extra in a future film, then please check out our Patreon at / yarnhub

Some stories even get toned down for the silver screen, because reality can be less plausible than fiction. Audie Murphy's autobiographical movie toned down his actions, out of fear that the audiences wouldn't believe the true extent of his war.

Seeing how this is from a month ago I’m betting you watched this on 11/11. Nice. I wanted to give you a personal thanks too. It’s not a half assed “thank you for your service” though, because you didn’t do it to get a thanks from us. Regardless, thank you for taking the fight to the baddies, making sure that at least a few terrorists weren’t gonna make it over here and by doing that you gave me a share of my freedom. I’m free to be an absolute useless piece of shit that does nothing until I get a job again, and I don’t have to worry about someone bombing or shooting my neighborhood up. A lot of teens and adults don’t have to worry about that because you were fixing Warriors, and those Warriors could bring the fight to them instead. I’ll join up with the CAF after I’m done with my service here in the IDF and later in the Marines. I really can’t thank you enough. I don’t believe all soldiers are heroes because we both know a lot of society’s scum end up there, but I won’t let it stop me from thanking you for doing your part to keep us free from such threats.

My Great Grandfather was one of the men in Fray Bentos - William Morrey. I only stumbled upon the story myself after digging through some old family photos a few years ago. Apparently, William was a very quiet man and never spoke of the story himself - so no one, not even family, knew what he had been through. Still, it's amazing to think what he did, it was an immense ordeal.

Regarding to the name of the tank: Fray Bentos was the name of a meat company which was located in the town of Fray Bentos, Uruguay (it's a small country in South America) and which it exported meat to England. Interesting thing is, no one knows the origin of the name. The town was originally called "Villa Independencia" and was renamed to "Fray Bentos" in 1900, but there is no record as to why that name was chosen. Historians are able to find the name "Fray Bentos" in military records from Spanish sailors in the 17th and 18th century where they describe the same location using the term but then again, no record was found as to why. So... Yeah... Both the tank and the name are legends... And on a side note, there was another tank named "Fray Bentos II" in honor to this one, which also fought bravely but was captured in the battle of Cambrai in November 1917 and was paraded through the streets of Berlin on that year's Christmas Eve as a show for Kaiser Wilhelm II.

I wanted to recommend the story of Hiroo Onoda. He was a Japanese holdout in the Philippines after Japan surrendered. He fought for 30 YEARS after the surrender of Imperial Japan on the island of Lubang. He wrote a book about his experiences called "No Surrender, My 30 year war." and I recommend reading it. It is fascinating how he persevered through an American landing on his island, living in the jungles, and using guerilla warfare against the enemy. Not to mention the others who survived with him. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves and I hope you make a video about him.

I've been watching your content since the BF-109 spared the B-17 video and I'm glad to have stuck around for a full year. All of your videos are amazingly high-quality and the animation has heavily improved since the transition from 2D to 3D. I hope this channel eventually grows to the size it deserves.

The passion you show for your aninimation. The attention to detail and "the little things" is what set your channel apart from others. Covering the lesser known but needed to be known sides of history is what you do best and is something you should never stop doing. Never stop.

These videos won't teach you history as they are of little importance of the international scene and of the war itself. But even then, they are some of the best "small facts" historical videos that I've seen on this platform. Good job, cant wait to see what you guys come up in the future.

The Lee Enfield was the British's standard rifle. He meant that the rifle used by the Brits seen in the video is called the no. 4 That model (no. 4) made its first appearance in ww2, the Brits would be using the no. 3 Lee Enfield in ww1
