The Torrens River holds an array of species, depending on where you are fishing. The Tandanus Catfish are often a by-catch whilst chasing carp!

If I had to guess I'd say the catfish are native man.. iv seen them my whole life now being 30 .. here you are still catching them.. I saw them caught when I was 10 sighted them swimming when I was 17 ...caught them when I was 19 again when i was 21 all different locations. There's also a population up north in one of the rivers probably others. It would be silly to think these rivers didn't ever have native fish populations present before carp and redfin. Nice videos Alex. Get back on to it ✌🏻

I have raised Tandanus Catfish from younglings to adults in aquaponics.. Nothing as the same as seeing them in the natural world but they are something to be respected. They are also excellent eating just saying.

Hi, im actually thinking about growing these species in a small setup. But I keep reading different things, like they grow badly in captivity etc. And then on RU-vid and Forums I keep reading they grow really well. They are very good eating. Any tips?
@RAWSET
@RAWSET 6 месяцев назад
Aquaponics is an excellent way to raise them for the fresh veg benefits and its water saving. You only add water to keep it topped up. Aquaculture needs water changes often or the water gets bad. They grow fairly slow but very healthy. I've lost a couple in long cold times in winter the water got to 7 deg C. They reached over 1kg in 6-7 years. Sadly I lost them when I transfered them to a new AP set up. Its still a mystery why but it was a very cold winter and the new system hadnt built up enough immunity yet I think. Baby fish transfer and adapt easily. Adults don't like being transfered so much. @@hogsupply6733

Pretty sure I've caught one of those or similar before up in Renmark, hadn't seen one before. Lucky I didn't get spiked by those spines, realised it had some but didn't realise it was venomous. Reminded me of that mutated catfish from the Simpsons with the amount of teeth they have haha.

They are good eating and although they are protected in most areas and MUST be released although they can be caught legally in some exclusive locations in Vic (u will have to check your region). Despite the ugly appearance these really are a great table fish.

Nice one Alex and very interesting commentary regarding catfish. They use to be abundant in the Murray River but their numbers have declined seriously. I'm amazed they are doing so well in the Torrens especially with the amount of Carp in it, and how they got there is a real mystery as there is no water flow from the Murray into the Torrens catchment that I know of. If you click on this link it will show you an image of their nest you mentioned www.fishingworld.com.au/news/fish-facts-eel-tailed-catfish I enjoy your videos, good work mate.

@petercarter6086

Very true Kim, people just go there to eat the catties and kill the carp, 🙁 last summer was walking the city stretch and 2 guys were fishing the platform next to morphet bridge, they had 6 rods out, 2 carp thrown up the bank and 3 catfish in a white bucket. Problem is they are morons doing nothing wrong 🤨

Ful-O-Gold I think they are a protected species in SA these days. I have eaten them in the distant past (I’m an old fart), excellent eating. As a kid in the 70’s we used to catch more of these things than carp around Waikerie.

Hi Alex, I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs, but catfish are no more native to the torrens than carp, which begs the question why are you supposed to kill carp but can't remove catfish from the torrens ?

@@Mickey-lz2ce try telling that to the carp hating bogan fishos i met fishing the torrens west of Morphet Bridge in the city, the 2 of them had 5 rods out, 6 carp thrown up the bank and 3 catfish in a white bucket. Ironically the people you demonize catch and releasing carp and catfish there would leave that place spotless unlike the morons that leave empty cans of corn and all their other sh#t left on the bank with the dead carp 🤦‍♂️
