Geoff is from Virginia and moved to Florida.........southern enough.....But here's the thing. People spend forever talking about his low notes---his HIGH notes are incredible! HIS RANGE!!! And a range where he really sound good in every octave he sings in!!!
From what I've seen, Geoff is a truly humble man, which is difficult to find these days. He will tell you he's old and boring, but he is definitely neither. He also has a fun side which you can see in his version of Way Down, and his sense of humor comes through on the tutorials he's done and even in the video he and his wife did sharing the story of her hearing loss.
What's wild is, this is a somewhat rare (now) case of Geoff not using any subharmonics (producing a note one octave lower using the physics of soundwaves). That's all his chest voice. The man is a dragon. Speaking of which, "Over Misty Mountains Cold" and "I See Fire" from The Hobbit are good ones to check out. The first really shows off his low range (Misty Mountains trended on RU-vid back when it was released, which is how I found Geoff, and later found VoicePlay) and the second shows just how good his tenor range is. He's a one-man acapella group!
Awesome reaction. Geoff learned to play the harmonica in 2014 when he played Elwood Blues a few times at Universal Studios Orlando. He has a 5+ range. Super high and super low. He usually clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Each with their own names and personalities. In this video left to right.... Jeff, Geoff, Daryl and Jeoph. The other is Goff. The numbers on his shirts are each of their names from the keypad numbers on the phone. His wife Kathy's idea. Yes. This man is extremely talented. I am on his and Voiceplay Patreon and I love it. These guys are all humble and genuine. The type you want to hang out with. Voiceplay new video coming out on Friday shows their funny side. Probably noon est. Another video they did that shows their funny goofy side is "Butter". Pay attention to the background.
@@nickforell1 thank you for another great reaction to Geoff. He always goes above & beyond in all he does. Who else but Geoff would rent out an entire prison for a video ? No one ! Both Geoff & Layne from Voice Play always give their all. They are all very theatrical & are known as The Theater Kids of acapella. They always give us fans what we want. They don't go on tour anymore unless it is a special request. They would rather spend the money they get from their Patreons to produce all their awesome videos for us. They are getting too old to do both. Plus it gives them all time to spend with their families.
@@nickforell1 , great reaction to Geoff! You mentioned about Geoff's octave range. If you want to check out his extremes, you should react to his version of Paul McCartney's "Blackbird" song. It's beautiful and his range is off the chain!
Speaking of Geoff's "normal speaking voice" - he's also got narrations of several poems and stories on his solo channel, some of them fairly long, but a few are short enough you could do a reaction to them if you wanted to (like Poe's The Raven) - although I'm not sure what kind of audience you'd have for those. Personally, I'd be willing to sit and listen to Geoff read me a phone book or his grocery shopping list!
It always makes me giggle when people hear Geoff’s baritone range for the first time and they go ‘wow, that’s deep’ when he hasn’t even accessed the bass register yet in the song 😂. The crazy thing is that he didn’t even use any extended techniques in this either, just pure chest voice! Welcome to the VP/Geoff club! 😊
Geoff began naming his "clones" during the Way Down video shoot. Since then, he continues to identify the various Geoffs by those names. The prisoners are, from left to right: 05333 - Jeff, 43633 - Geoff, 32795 - Daryl, and 53674 - Jeoph (clone Goff was acquitted). Geoff said he, Jeff, and Jeoph were released from prison, but "Daryl didn't make it out, he stayed on to be the prison cook. I guess his true passion was haute cuisine - Who knew?" Jeff is reading "Cash: The Autobiography of Johnny Cash." Geoff learned to play the harmonica when he portrayed Elwood Blues in the Universal Studios Blues Brothers show. The low note in this one is an F#1. There were supposed to be more "background Geoffs" on both upper levels, but they could only access the ends and the left side as you face the video. There was originally a bridge between the two sides and Daryl was supposed to be doing pull-ups from it rather than the pushups you see in the video. Fun fact: There is a continuity error at timestamp 1:50 - Jeff's glasses are not hanging from the front of his shirt. The decommissioned prison is in the process of being turned into an algae farm. They rented a section which hadn't been converted yet.
Geoff's range and ease in each register is phenomenal. His arranging skill is a super-power. You will love his other covers which are very diverse. The first I heard him was Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold which is stunning. Enjoy another rabbit hole!!
Geoff rented a closed down prison that was being converted to an algae farm. Did you catch the little hidden details. The first inmate was reading a book about Johnny Cash. Also, each of the inmate numbers correspond to letters on your phone and spell out the clones' names. 5333= Jeff 53674= Jeoph 32975= Daryl 43633 = Geoff Geoff and Kathy's attention to detail is astounding! And yes, Geoff is really playing the harmonica. He had to learn for a fof at Universal years ago. Voiceplay and Geoff fans like to joke that the only thing Geoff can't do is admit that he's a bass singer. He still tries to claim that he's a baritone with a bass range. But Peter Barber called him out on it in their interview.
Great interview too. Peter Barber is another reactor and is a bass opera singer. He's also a member of the Bass Gang acapella group. Yes. I think Peter set Geoff straight on that one 😂
I think Geoff still hears his own voice in his head like it was back when he was a teenager, and that it's deepened so gradually over the years that he's the only one who hasn't noticed.
@@nickforell1 Over on VoicePlay, listen to either "Halo" or "Vahalla Calling" to hear his lowest notes thus far (the Viking fog horn B0) and "Peaches" for his highest. Geoff also plays piano in a bunch of songs like High and Dry, Shenandoah, and Sound of Silence.
Geoff was born in Virginia so he falls into the country style singing quite naturally. He has done a couple other country songs as well. As you can see, he is Very versatile. During a recent interview with Peter Barber he mentioned his range as 6 octaves. He is always working on his range to strengthen and expand it.
Yes, Geoff, and all the members of VoicePlay are genuine, humble, kind people. I just love them all. So, I skimmed your comments, and forgive me if someone did say this already. VoicePlay is based in Florida, but Geoff was born in Virginia and he lived there until around the age of 7, I believe. So when he was learning to talk, he was in Virginia. Then his family moved to Florida, but he still retains a subtle southern accent which, in my opinion, is quite charming. If you want to hear him sing a smidgen of modern country, check out VoicePlay's mini of Josh Turner's, "Your Man".
If you like the sound of a harmonica, you really need to listen to Home Free's rendition of "Man of Constant Sorrow" from the film "O Brother Where Art Thou." The harmonica sound is produced by their beat boxer. Totally worth your time.
And for a har-monica ,not no-monica, check out Dan Vasc in his cover of Amazing Grace. He is a metal singer. He starts out slow then plays the harmonica for part of it (as a bit of a tribute to his dad who gave him his first harmonica) and then finishes out with a full metal voice. It’s a pretty impressive piece.
Oh, and something to look for which I'm obsessed with is that if you were to mute the video you could still tell when he's going to drop a massive note. Watch his hand, I don't know if it's conscious or not but he always directs them. Also, catch the smirk. He knows why we love him and he plays it up so well.
He shouts out his top tier patrons, and the top and next highest patrons’ names are rolling in the list. But we are also a whole lot many more patrons on lower tiers, he actually has quite many 😊. And it’s a joy to support him! Sometimes he uses the help of other VoicePlay members for camera and/ or lighting to film his videos, but in many (as in this) everything is done by him and his wife Kathy (except the final sound mix, it’s done by Ed Boyer). Check the credits for his and VoicePlay’s videos, they do almost everything themselves and that is so impressive imo!
Great reaction! That was Geoff playing the harmonica. He’s a super nice guy with phenomenal talent. His and VoicePlay’s Patreon community is wonderful. If you want to get a better idea of his range, check out his cover of I See Fire.
The rest of the instrumentals on this are also Geoff. He plays them on the keyboard, using (in this case) a guitar plug-in. IF something is not otherwise credited under the Video Description, then it is him (well - or possibly his wife Kathy if it is production oriented.)
Geoff is an amazing artist! I think he has a five octave range but his subharmonics are truly insane! I love his version of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s Sixteen Tons, you should listen when you get a chance. I am so glad you like Geoff and the crew from Voiceplay, they are so talented, so theatrical too. Thanks!
Geoff has a 5+ range: A0 growl, B0 subharmonics, F1 or F#1 full chest, A5 in live performance in Elvira but recently hit Bb5 in Peaches (Super Mario Brothers mini)
A friend sent me a link to Geoff's version of 16 Tons, from there I found Voiceplay and I have been hooked ever since. Geoff didn't start doing solo work until Covid shut the world down and Voiceplay could no longer go on the road. He has only done one song without harmony, Radiohead's High and Dry. His harmonizing clones are shown in all of his videos except Sound of Silence that he did earlier this year. He's still singing harmony, but solo Geoff is the only one on camera. Great reaction, I look forward to more Geoff and Voiceplay!
Actually, he has one other nonstandard video on his solo channel. For "Mele Kalikimaka," he sings only one part, and he brought in The American Sirens as backup. The version is a cover of the version by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Of his solo stuff, I believe the most beautiful use of his high voice is "I See Fire," and the most beautiful use of his low voice is "Till Then." Happy rabbit hole.
Almost right. Cash did write the song in 1950s Germany whiilst on active service but it wasn't during the war. The WW2 ended in 1945. Yes that's Geoff playing the harmonica. He had to learn it when appearing as a Blues Brother. It him doing the singing. His range is five octaves all together. His wife Kaathy did the filming and sorted his clothes.. Then Geoff did the editing putting it all together. He also does all the music using a keybiard with plugins to get the different instrument sounds. And the pushups of course. :)
Hey glad to see you have discovered Voice Play, This guy is amazing , can't be possibly human to sing like that, and of course the harmonica solo is enjoyable
Thank you for your delightful reactions to Geoff's latest. May I suggest Man of Constant Sorrow, Blackbird, or I See Fire for further exploration of the multiple Geofs' universe.
If you want to see all of his range in one 10-second clip, watch the end of Oogie Boogie Song with VoicePlay. (Watch the whole thing.) 😂 For another terrific solo work, watch his performance of Elvis's Way Down.
This was sooo good. I loved all the easter eggs in it as well. The numbers on their shirts are not random. If you look at the numbers on the phone the spell out the Geoff clones name. Also, near the end there are 3 more Geoffs on the second floor. The book Jeff is reading is Johnny Cash's autobiography. Just so much to see. Great reaction!!
@@nickforell1 the way Geoff sings Sounds Of Silence will reach deep down into your soul. So different from anyone else. Please do a reaction to it. ❤️ Always wait till the end of the credits roll because there is usually an important message from Geoff or another member of Voice Play. You won't want to miss it especially in Voice Plays Halo theme song Halo from the Halo video game. The composer of the Halo song said that Voice Plays cover was better than his.
One of the nicest people you'll ever meet...and funny! I know he plays the piano and harmonica but wouldn't be surprised if there's more...I think he plays the guitar but not sure. Sixteen Tons is a must watch and Way Down is also...it's a fun one! I loved seeing your reaction to him...I have the same reaction every single time I hear him sing! Regards from Kentucky! Almost forgot...I don't hear a twang at all! 😅
About Geoff's speaking voice, if you're interested you should check out his reading of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. It's on his channel. That deep voice reading classic poetry is worth the 8 minutes,
Yes, it truly is worth it! Geoff is obviously very well-read, and seems to be partial to Poe. That's fine with me because I absolutely love Poe's writings! I used to freak out my literature students by suddenly breaking out into a recitation of "Annabelle Lee"! Lol!
Thank you so much for this reaction. Please keep watching and reacting to Geoff and voiceplay. They are worth it and they have super loyal fans that will become yours as well. Again, thank you.
Geoff has a video on his channel about singing (really) low, and how he does it, techniques and stuff. It's pretty interesting, plus you get to hear a lot of his speaking voice, so...
This video makes me so happy. I think this is my third video I've seen of your. On the first video I suggested Geoff Quakes and seeing the first reactions. And now, they can add yours!
Nick, since you like the harmonica, you should check out 'Orange Blossom Special' performed live by Johnny Cash and Roy Clark. Both were consummate entertainers and gifted musicians. Johnny two-fisted two harmonicas. Roy, especially, is considered a GOAT on the guitar,
Great reaction! You should check out his covers of Ghost Riders In the Sky and I See Fire...or basically anything he's done, solo or with VoicePlay, it's all spectacular.
Just rewatched your reaction. There are basses who can go lower than Geoff and higher, for that matter. It is the quality of his voice that is so impressive. Close to five octaves. He loves what he does, his wife Kathy is his production manager, as she is for Voiceplay. On this one, it was only him and Kathy in that prison. No AC, at least 85 degrees inside and about 90% humidity. They made it even more difficult by adding the three extra Geoffs on the second level!
So you started down the Pentatonix and Voice Play rabbit holes, now you need to do the trifecta of the acapella. Next you need to do Home Free, the country boys of acapella.
Next, watch his cover of Sound of Silence. PLEASE! And also, he sings awesome Halloween songs and also some with Voice Play! You will never be disappointed.
Yes, please DO! It's sooo beautiful... the guys made Geoff sing riffs DOWN... he said: "nope, can't do!" But he COULD and has added to his skills incredibly ... no end in sight... better and better...🎉😂❤
I love Geoff, but I have to give the cover of this song to Home Free's acapella cover. Highly recommended. As for the harmonica... you should check out Home Free's acapella cover of Man of Constant Sorrow.
A harmonica lover like you, but no reactions to "Blues Travelers" from the 90's. Try either "But Anyway" or "Hook" both have awesome harmonica. You won't be disappointed.
is it just my monitor or is your showing of the video more see through than normal? i dont remember your other video doing that, it made it hard to see for sure. i enjoyed the reaction, cant wait to see how far down the rabbit hole you go!
