On this episode of Danger Close, Jack sits down with former police officer, Diplomatic Security Service special agent, author, and security consultant Fred Burton.
Throughout his career, Fred served as a key figure in some of the most notable investigations in modern law enforcement history. He was on the frontlines of the search for and the arrest of terrorist Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind behind the first World Trade Center bombing. He served in the investigation of the 1988 plane crash that resulted in the death of the U.S. Ambassador Arnold Raphel and Pakistani President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. Fred also played a critical role in the search for the Americans kidnapped by Hezbollah in Beirut, Lebanon, as well as many other high-profile cases.
Today, Fred is a New York Times bestselling author and a consultant to Fortune 500 companies on security-related issues as the Executive Director of the Ontic Center for Protective Intelligence. He also hosts The Ontic Protective Intelligence Podcast.
His books include his memoir GHOST: Confessions of a Counterterrorism Agent, Chasing Shadows: A Special Agent's Lifelong Hunt to Bring a Cold War Assassin to Justice, Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi and Beirut Rules: The Murder of a CIA Station Chief and Hezbollah’s War Against America.
During their conversation, Jack and Fred talk about some of his most high-profile cases, his early days in law enforcement, and a lot more.

It’s amazing how so many of these stories from agents, SEALS, Etc. Rely on just starting your career and being in the “right place at the right time”. Going back to Mr. Burton being assigned right out of agent training. Really makes a point for applying yourself to every available opportunity and putting yourself in the right place at the right time which could put you on quite the adventure in life.

Awesome podcast! I was a contractor for DSS. I had no idea that Admiral Inman was still alive. That is great. We still have a lot of "Inman" embassies around the world.

Small world. I was in the second Inman class hired by DSS. At the time we were DOS/SY (Department of State/Office of Security), and yes my interview experience was the same I really didn’t think I passed LOL. Yep BSR was awesome and the immortal “firearms instructor”. I was one of the trainers for Fred’s class and was on the Schultz protective detail. My wife and I collect antiques and Fred and I reconnected when an antique we purchased was the property of a former murder suspect, that Fred had investigated. Like Fred I grew up in the DC area, volunteered at a local Fire department/rescue squad, and was a Baltimore Police officer prior to starting as a DSS agent. As a retired fed I have returned to my roots and work as a Paramedic. Cool interview! Thanks

I was fortunate enough to get access to and begin following Fred Burton's work about 20 years ago. He gave us a look into areas and ideas that were otherwise closed to us, particularly concerning Mexico.

It's possible that we do. Someone had to fill Fred's position each time he left for a new job. I hope those guys were paying attention.

Jack, I truly enjoy your podcast. I have grabbed onto this one - something about Fred, his experience, wisdom and intelligence. Ghost was great. I have struggled to find credible info on Benghazi - I am 1/2 way through Under Fire, LEARNING. Chasing Shadows and Beirut Rules to follow. And today Audible suggested “The Ontic Protective Intelligence” Podcast by Fred Burton. 😊 Thank you and looking forward to The Terminal List series. ⭐️🇺🇸⭐️

Something I think would be an interesting topic for of conversation with Fred and any other authors would be their dealings with government review of their books.

I never understood Fred carrying a little book with names of bad boys (likely a classified item) and crossing names off the list as these folks were being taken out of play. Since I know Fred as I am a retried Senior DS Agent, I knew and was in the room with many very bad boys in my 29 year career and never knew anyone other than Fred who claimed they carried some little black book around. In fact if I had one of my Agents keep a book like this, I would take it from him/her as soon as I knew about some terrorist book. Huge operational security issue and frankly dumb to do.

What an interesting time. Back when most Feds were good dudes still figuring stuff out. ATF, DSS, DEA, the old Gaurd of cowboys were mostly trustworthy and Patriots. Now…not so much.
