In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”
But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark’s story.
In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven’t heard. Starting with Mark’s childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored. Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl. He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…
But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark’s life in ways he could have never anticipated.
IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.
About Part 3: The Raid
In part three of the Head of the Snake series, Jack and Mark do a deep dive into the raid that killed Osama bin Laden-no matter what you may have seen in the movies, this is a story with details you’ve likely never heard before.
Not only did last minute changes in Washington nearly cause a disaster for Mark and his team, but we also learn the methods used to infiltrate and clear the fortified compound. Jack also learns why the details of Bin Laden’s death can tell us so much about his life.

@@j.t.patton7820 I have the the book “The Operator” ( Rob O’Neill’s book) and have read it twice. I’ve seen many of Robs podcasts, interviews and seminars (most of which are very similar, he tells basically, the same story every time! With varying degrees of detail…) With that being said, I’ve never heard Rob say he killed the man on the 2nd floor stairs (aka Khalid, right?) nor does he ever claim to be running point. Until arrIval on the 3rd floor.’ The way Rob describes it, is; after “Chalk Two”( (Mark Owen) crashes, and “Chalk One” (Robs chopper) lands outside the compound. They make their way to the compound Gate, and thats when his breacher has a failed breach (false door/ brick wall), once they make entry into compound.. my understanding is that basically it was all by happenstance who’d be the first man to pop Bin Laden, and likely would be in any other mission. At any rate, after the point man drops Khalid, I’m just going to assume 2nd in line was Mark Owen, as 3rd was Rob, it just so happened that Rob had no choice but to double tap that tall fuck! When the first 2 in the train were still clearing And then what y’all seem to forget, is as a team, they next guy is going to be throwing lead down range until the threat is over. I believe Occam’s Razor is in play here. So y’all can believe what ya want. I’m sure while Rob technically “Split” Bin Laden’s “Whig” first and Mark Owen was secondary to stitch him up. It just makes sense to me. I’m sure after the fact it’s easy to the facts twisted! Just my two cents

I had a theory shortly after they announced it to the world. I guessed that the real shooter would never be known because competing stories would come out to muddy the waters and keep the secret safe. There are conflicts in all the stories... and being clever is what we expect from them. Who knows... big respect across the board.

I had a dream once where I met the real shooter. He told me he was born into slavery and began his military career at the battle of Mogadishu when he was 12 years old.If I told you what the rest of his resume was you'd never believe me so I'll just tell you what he told me about that night. He said the thing that still haunts him to this đây is not nearly dying in a parachuting accident right before the helo crash.Neither the angry mob, nearly coming to blows with Rob,Mark and the enterpreter nor the people he hađ to kill.He said he took a dump in the sand later on and realized he didn't have enough toilet paper tablets. After he took care of that too he was told he wasn't allowed to take shots with the rest of the guy's to help him come down off the adderall he was forced to take because they had to take him back to county jail to finish his sentence for public intox where instead of being paid 350,000 like the 2 ass holes that took him over there were they would electrocute the piss out of him instead to thank him for his service. He said he's not interested in all the king's horses and men putting humpty dumpty back together again as he's made peace with being a permanently SPLIT 🧸and if you think you're going to force him to give you a false confession you'll have to switch him then control his mind and speech or do so over his cold dead body which he says he wouldn't mind at all as he is vêry tired and isn't at all âfraid to stand before the Lord as you are trying to convince him hê should be and knows for a fact you who choose to go along with this evil should be.

This story has been out for years. The only thing it tells me is that the story the govt allowed Rob O'Neal to tell may be a lie. This guy clearly told this story to make Rob look like a liar. Sure the overall story is the same, but this guy refuses to say who pulled the trigger, and clearly gives a different story of how Big Laden was actually killed. He is only telling this story to create doubt on what Rob did. Rob may be the one lying, but don't be a chicken shit get on a podcast and discuss this with the person you may or may not be lying about. Same thing with Marcus Luttrell and his story. He has told it for yrs, but little shit changes. He claimed fighting 150 men, others who came later said the Intel said 10-12 guys. Also the guy who saved Marcus also tells a different story than him. The military allows these stories to come out. However they tell the story the way they want to make military sound amazing to young me so they join. It's propaganda just like Germany and Russia do

Great interview!! Thanks Mark for a lot of interesting details I had not heard before. Also, thank you both for your service! Such a shame how the military and US Gov. treat our soldiers as disposable when they decide to leave or are viewed as not useful anymore after all of the things our soldiers do for our country. My father served 3 tours in Vietnam, made a commitment to the Army and they still tried to rift him (kick him out) in the late 70's like they did to so many officers after the war. He was able to work the system and was able to retire at 20 years but a lot of his friends were caught by the rift, given a one time payment by the Carter administration and relieved without any retirement or benefits. For someone like Mark or Jack, to serve at the level they did with the accomplishments they made to not get some form of retirement after 14 years of high level service, especially considering all of the wasted money our Gov. spends like Billions of unaccounted $$'s going to Ukraine to fund someone else's military and not take care of our own is sinful and an embarrassment to our country. Love your podcast Jack (and books!) and thank you very much again Mark and Jack for you incredible service!!

When he was alleged to have just canoed an already dead Bin Laden. So Matt is talking about Red being the guy who took him out. Which matches independent accounts. O Neil was apparently boasting about a book deal before the job. Although he’s earned millions on the speaking circuit. Both guys claim to have shot him in their original stories. Mark came out way before Rob ever did telling the story. Mark and Rob both wrote books about their times in the Teams. Mark, from what I remember, was sued or forced somehow to stop with the book, I don't remember the specifics, but he got into trouble for writing it and making money on it. Rob wrote a book as well, it was approved by the DoD. I've listened to Rob's account numerous times and his delivery of the story is pretty consistent, just a little bit of detail varies per time he discusses it. Mark's account to me is the fabricated version, the level of detail discusses the raid in and how UBL was taken down leads me to believe he was on the raid and is taking AAR info and making up his own version. I think Rob is the one who shot UBL, to me he seems more believable. I don't think we'll ever really know until every guy from the raid is retired and knows that nothing can happen to them for discussing it. There's been plenty of other Development Group guys that were there that haven't talked about it much. I'd love to see Rob, Mark, Will, Terry and Bill all in one room to discuss it. Chances are it will never happen, for whatever reason. It does make for a very interesting comments section though!

I do have a question. Why everytime you see an operator talk about bin laden whether they were on the raid or whether they're just talking about him do you see the picture and information of Osama bin laden in the description? Does RU-vid do that automatically because they're all identical...

Interesting, there are small inconsistencies between this story and the other ones that have been made public. (Not unexpected) but something small: O’Neal says Bin Ladens beard was gray and this guy says jet black. But there’s so many more details that match up perfectly: one guy using his camel back to rinse off the face.

@@MrPezzi5 Yes, Andy Stumphf has admitted that within the SEAL community it’s known he is not the guy. They just won’t speak on it publicly because the actual guy doesn’t want to be known. Andy and Jack actually talk about it vaguely in a podcast they did recently. Rob actually screwed the mission allegedly the White House asked they not shoot him in the face. So the fist guy shot him center made a couple times. Then Rob came in after and shot him in the face splitting his head open!! The rest of the team shot him various times also after. That’s why his body couldn’t be shown to the public. The SEALs had just come under scrutiny for possible war crimes for this exact type of miss conduct. Robs team liked to “canoe” people that it killed. It’s basically a slang term they used for shooting them in the head in a way that splits the skull. The story about burring him at sea so he doesn’t become a martyr was a garbage attempt to cover SEAL team screwing over the White House. Look into it all and you will at the very least come to the conclusion Rob is lying as is this guy.

Ignore and override. How the hell do you ignore and override when your best friend just died? Now that I think about it, my son was VERY sick with an intestinal issue when he was 2, just after the virus started. I had to hold him down so the nurses could get IVs going. Hardest thing I ever did in my life, but I did it because it's what my boy needed. I did shed a couple tears listening to my boy scream from the needles, but I was focused and following the nurses directions. I'm guessing what you guys do is similar.

Man if Rob O'Neill's story was a boat.. that son-of-a-bitch would have so many holes in it that it would be at the bottom of the ocean right now!! You can tell the big difference between this guy story and Rob's, garage is extremely Hollywood-esk.. this guy's story talks about just another night at work but an abnormal entry with a high-level Target.. don't forget to mention that those were Rob's hands holding his face together in those pictures. Don't forget to mention Rob was the one behind the lead guy RED, And he gave him the squeeze and they went in an Rob dotted Osama!! Don't forget those details😂😂😂😂.. boy ole boy Rob stole someone's Valor!! Is that not accurate to say? Asking for a friend 🙋‍♂️
