I grew up at the airport in KeyWest and as a kid i would race the planes to the end of the runway on my bmx. I grew up around this man and he was a legend. Everyone knew him and i got to know him very well and get to go to many of his pig roast/hanger partys. I like to think he saw a lil bit of himself in me when i was a kid. I remember one time i was riding my bike on the ramp and he pulled up in his Waco Stearman and said hey you want to go for a ride, with the plane still running i dropped my bike on the ramp right there and jumped in. He was going to pull a banner he did every sunset to advertise his rides. We took off and as soon as we took off he rolled the plane upside down and i remember just hanging from my seatbelt looking at the ground in this open cockpit plane. Then we pick up the banner and did our ride and landed. That was my first ride ever in a plane at 9yrs old my dad was looking for me when we landed and i said i went up with Fred in the Waco and he was so proud i felt like a changed person afterward like a grew up a lil. I miss you everyday my friend. There will never be another Fred Cabanas. RIP
Fred took me for a ride in his Pitts years ago. I told him, don't hold back, let's do everything you'd do at an airshow. He delivered in spades, inside loops, outside loops, the whole works.......it was an unforgettable experience. Thank you Fred. God bless you Fred!
Lo conocí en república dominicana, el estaba a punto de despegar en su avión amarillo y había olvidado su cuchilla multi uso, yo le hice señas que parara y se lo lleve, el me dio las gracias y saco una foto de su avión la autografío y me la regalo. RIP
Ha , Fred was great , he picked up a bail out rig I packed for him in a Hawker Sea Fury and offered me a ride in it to where he was going , but I had to find my own ride home , still regret not catching that ride with him 🙃
“Flying straight and level is boring”, very very true, but I bet anyone onboard a 747 flight to somewhere would prefer it if you did it boring, especially in first class........they would spill their champagne and caviar.
