Interesting comment, but it really depends on what your definitions of great, and consistent are. sprinting is the culmination of the three races. Kerley is one of three that has run sub 10 sub 20 sub 44. Johnson has not. is Johnson the greatest 400m runner of all time? Id say so, even with his record being broken. But his greatness and kerleys are different. as for consistency, my opinion is that it is different than longevity. Sure, you need enough time to run enough races to be called consistent, but Lyles tied bolt for the most sub 20 races of all time and he is not even peaked yet. I would say there is a fair argument to say that lyles running more frequently would make his consistency more impressive.

@@justintaylor3336 I mean, it’s silly to say bc they have equal sub 20s they are equally great. Bolt doubled. That’s not even a debate. Lyles does one thing and his best thing isn’t as good as bolt. Nothing wrong with that. But he’s consistently great. Noah has no Olympic golds have you forgotten? I don’t think this is a definition issue either. Americas greatest sprinter is probably Americas most accomplished sprinting, one event or not. doesn’t mean Fred can’t become that. He doesn’t need to match a 100% gold rate either. But to your point he runs other events. Now if he had multiple medals in multiple events we can talk. But to compensate for a guy who has never lost a final in international competition, you must be decorated. Again, I like Fred I lot. And he can do it. And to your point again I think a varied sprinter who is decorated does appear better imo than a specialist who may be slightly more decorated. But he’s not done that yet. Imo he’s not outdone the likes of Wallace but I have a soft spot for Wallace and his performances in an era full of positive drug tests left and right. But Fred is kind of weird. He’s a quarter miler who prefers 1 lap despite being excellent at a much shorter distance. Usually it’s reverse. The issue is you absolutely can’t double the 100 and 400. The 400 is too tough and schedule doesn’t work. The 2/4 double is hard enough. Idk what he’s gonna do - Fred and erriyon are two of the most intriguing sprinters right now in terms of potential to shake things up. Can’t wait to see what he chooses to do at worlds and into Olympic year

Gay is nowhere near the best American sprinter. MIchael Johnson, Carl Lewis and Justin Gatlin are all better than he is while Lyles already matches him in World Championship gold with 3 and actually placed in the Olympics unlike Gay

⁠. Tyson Gay never won an individual Olympic gold medal which is the requirement for true greatness, I would also rate Maurice Green amongst others in addition to those mentioned ahead of Tyson Gay.

I think a case can be made for Tyson, but ultimately I think Michael Johnson is America's #1 sprinter. I think Gay, Gatlin, Lewis, & Owens are 2nd~5th in no particular order, then probably Lyles at 6th.

@@fredbouwman7218 quads doubling in size would be extremely large. Its a huge exaggeration to say. I personally will go against anyone who makes a statement against someone without decent proof.

When Gay & Gatlin ran at the same time I would say that was a deeper field. Both have 100 & 200 PBs better than Kerleys. Then you had some other quite decent sprinters like Mike Rodgers 9.85 PB, Ryan Bailey 9.86 PB, Walter Dix 19.5x 200m PB, I forget his 100m PB.

I agree, he has peaked fantastically in the last few seasons. I think the only question is whether he can drop those times on the Budapest track, as all his 9.7s have been in oregon.

Fantastic times, 9.68 would put him 2nd all time but would assume that 200m time would put him in 3rd at worlds behind Lyles and Knighton.

To be fair he did run down Kenny this year in the 200m clocked a 19.92 SB. I look for him to improve on the turn and make his 200m more complete.

Okay you bring up such a valid point Fred Kerley is a monster in the 100m and 400m and always runs elite level times 100: 9.76 +1.4m/s 200: 19.76 +2.0m/s (AT ALTITUDE IN KENYA.. THIS MAN SHOULD'VE RAN LIKE 19.50) 400: 43.64 You're absolutely right, it boggles my mind. His 200m times are not trash at all, they're elite but it just seems pedestrian compared to what he can do in the 100m and 400m

yeah it's weird that a guy that can run 43.6 and 9.76 can't go sub 19.6 in the 200m. Maybe he's one of those guys that needs to focus on just one event to really become elite at it. Early on I remember he was the next big thing in the 4, then went down to focus on just the 100m really and became elite at that, maybe he needs to focus just on the 200m to really get his times down.

That's 41 strides in 100m which is the exact same as Usain Bolt (and he was known for his stride length.)

Yeah agreed, he's tied 6th all-time in the 100m, while he's 8th all-time in the 400m. It surprises me that doesn't translate to around 7th all-time in the 200m. A 9.76 & 43.64 combination implies his 200m PB should be in the 19.5s, near Dix, Gay, & Gatlin. Gatlin's 100m best is 0.02 better than Kerley's, & didn't run the 400, yet his 200 is 19.57 7th all-time, while Kerley's is not in the top 25. Maybe one of these days Fred will put together a 200 to his full potential.

Jacobs hasn't done much since because of injuries and Kerley has rain 3 9.7 races since then. He was silver in 2021 and Gold 2022. Clearly he's the best in the world right now.

​​@@tahjaonestly it's not that hard at the moment but zharnal surprise puts kerly as only 3rd fastest this year so I wouldn't call him the best I don't have much faith in the Kenya guy as he hasn't won since leaving Kenya but zharnal has won his races

He hasn't even been running that fast in the 100 plus he's only been running against pretty slow runners this year so not really that impressed

No. If you mean win gold in so three events but maybe if you mean get at least bronze. Even then though I don't like his odds as he is at best the 3rd fastest 200m sprinter in the US

A part of me wishes that he try the 100/400 double 🤣 esp since Norman, Alison, Godwin, and Cherry aren’t fit now. But the schedule is too risky!
