To be fair, John cena being in this movie is still incredibly fucking based. John Cena is a great actor when he tries to be. And he fit into the movie surprisingly well

I’m sorry, I actually laughed when Fred was running on the rollercoaster. I was cleaning and had this in the background and when I look over, I see a terrible green screen and Fred with such a horrifying face and Kei saying “he ran on the rollercoaster 😐” 😭😭😭

Okay, now onto my actual response. So, first thing's first, this movie was super rushed lol. In the DVD commentary, they literally said that the writing process was essentially just driving around and picking random locations to include in the movie. So that explains why it's like that. There were a few different endings that they had in mind, of course. There was a chance that Bertha would end up with Fred at the end, which... I'm glad that didn't happen, because it really does not fit their characters at all. The fact that Judy actually does end up with Fred is questionable to me. Since Derf appears in that scene, it's intended to be ambiguous as to whether it's actually real or not, but then Fred 2 implied that it *is* real. It feels like such an awkward resolution because like, Judy didn't notice him at all... in the DVD commentary they said that what they had in mind for the characters was that they used to be friends when they were really little but grew apart. Fred and Judy have NOTHING in common, so it might have made more sense to just have a resolution that involves him becoming closer friends with Bertha. But I guess then, the whole setup of wanting to sing with Judy gets thrown out the window? So it wouldn't be a satisfying ending? So the whole thing about the movie is kind of that Fred just gets knocked down constantly, but wins a little bit in the end, which is kind of wholesome. I think it's so funny though, that so much happens between the first and second movie, and it just gets skipped over entirely. I have my own theories and headcanons about it, but I'll save that for another time. It's the fact that Fred is so hated by pretty much every character that is supposed to make him sympathetic, you know? Unfortunately, a lot of his bad character traits come from his characterization from the web series... where he was literally 6 YEARS OLD! And that's kinda what makes some of the stuff not really work in the movie, because they may have decided not to pitch up his voice nearly to the level that the sped-up dialogue in the web series did, but they didn't make him any more mature despite being aged up. And it's also worth noting that, in the web series episode "Fred Stalks Judy", it's kind of just a case of him not really knowing any better and wandering into Judy's house lol, because he was literally 6 years old. So the way it's framed in the movie is kind of... more incriminating because it's intentional. But... cautiously... from the perspective of him just being an idiot and not knowing any better, I think Fred is generally kind of sympathetic throughout the franchise. A lot of the people in the fandom are neurodivergent, so I think it's that aspect that kind of speaks to us. The difference in characterization between Judy from the web series and Judy from the movie is pretty big, and I think the reason why is because they got Pixie Lott, who is super famous in the UK. Idk, sometimes when there are celebrity stars in random movies, they try to give them a flattering role. She kind of plays this unattainable love interest (I think they even said in the DVD commentary that they were going for a Grease kind of effect with her accent), who is generally a nice person, but so far away from the world of the main character. In the web series, though, Judy is kind of mean to Fred lol. Kevin is always meaner than her, and she will call him out on it sometimes, but she also joins in on the teasing a lot. So it's just interesting that they changed her character so much. I won't talk too much about how that unintentionally plays into the queer coding of Fred lol, but yeah, according to new Fred official TikTok canon by Lucas, Fred is canonically queer (it's unclear if he's bi or gay but Lucas himself is gay, so... that's the perspective of the writer), and in Fred: The Show, they teased the Fred x Kevin ship quite a bit. She got written out after this movie because she's too famous to be in critically panned movies, so that only paved the way for the new canon even more lol. I have to say, I definitely agree with you about the pacing and the jokes being way too quick. I've seen this movie like 5 or 6 times, so I appreciate all the small details and stuff, but I definitely didn't notice a lot of stuff right away. I do find the movie enjoyable, though. But I will say, I think the second movie is the most rewatchable. It's a lot slower (maybe too slow?) so it kind of balances out this movie and has a lot of fun character interactions in it, despite Jennette McCurdy getting replaced (Daniella Monet does a good job, but it's definitely a different portrayal of the character). The fact that the second one has a lot less of just Fred by himself adds to the rewatchability and enjoyment, although I do love the chaotic energy of the first movie just being Fred's solo craziness. They also kept the same writer for the second one, but changed the director. Maybe because the second one was ALSO supposed to be in theaters? It was filmed in 3-D (and you can tell). I actually kinda like the way the first one is directed and I think the second one feels soooo much more like a typical Nickelodeon film, but I think the writing still shines through in that the characters are so well-remembered in the fandom (even the ones that are exclusive to this movie like Mr. Devlin and Talia), and there are charming and funny moments. Trust me, once you watch Fred 3, you miss that writing quality lol, because in Fred 3 every character is just a cardboard cutout kids movie trope... it's so hard to remember any of them, and they try to write Fred as the "straight man" for some reason? Dude, it's *Fred*. What are you doing. I may be a Fred fan, and I do enjoy most of the TV show, but I actually hate the third one and find it kind of unwatchable lol. You can tell it was written by writers who have mastered the Nickelodeon cliche formula... for better or worse. What I kind of dislike about Fred 2 is that it doesn't lean as eagerly into the ambiguously imaginary stuff, but it's honestly still such a fun watch. A Halloween classic for me. So yeah, I think the reason why the fandom enjoys this movie and the second movie (they're basically a package deal!) is because it expands on the Fred lore and it allows for so many new character interactions. And, if you consider the simplistic origins of the characters, that's actually a lot of fun to see. Fred is so different from Lucas's other characters; he has this earnest, innocent (despite everything) quality to him that makes him fun to watch and actually kind of sympathetic and endearing, despite the absolute chaos of his world. Plus, everyone in the first two movies and the show is giving it their all, especially the actors, whether they want to be there or not (ahem... looking at you, Jake Weary) which helps make the characters memorable. The Fred franchise is actually insane because it's super dark, but it's also kinda wholesome. It really was the first thing that demonstrated how kids media from the internet just has *no* standards compared to mainstream media kids media, because only a series from the internet could involve stuff about alcoholism, prostitution, jokes about needing medication (although it's just, you know, ADHD medication, but I don't think mainstream media kids shows would joke about that in the same way), abusive parenting played for laughs, etc., and get away with selling merchandise to children and ending up on Nickelodeon lol.
