I just played this again and the solos are totally incredible…both K.G. and Freddie of course who rewrites the book on this tune that Dizzy made so famous. Freddie was da man fer sure.

Clifford Brown is spiritually in the house especially with the cadenza - well almost; just good enough!

Wow, Templeton is really into Bud Powell... quoting some of Bud's solo from the Toronto concert with Bird and Diz.

A real classic performance of an 'istorical composition. It's like they played the history of the piece from Diz to Lee with Art with Freddie putting his artistic, virtuosic, original touch to the tune. A great group. Carl Allen is right on it as a drummer should be. Awesome!

Fcking incredible…but then Freddie usually was. That solo at the end….off the chain and then that joking at the end about his chops afterwards is very funny. Love this guy to death. What a master!

Ira Coleman on the bass has the most eccentric way of holding that bass ! Looks as though he is about to ride it off like a rocket ship. Right leg over the top ... very weird. I must give it a try . Though it looks uncomfortable.

Alessandro Bolsieri he wanted to cue the head but the rhythm either didn't understand or didn't follow intentionally..
@tomscott1741
@tomscott1741 3 года назад
One cannot be sure exactly what happened, but I surmise that the Rhythm Section wanted him to stop soloing. On this tune when you're done with your solo, you return to the ending phrases before the break. Kenny Garrett must not have known that, cuz Freddy comes in and does it for him.

Carl Allen got carried away and Freddie set him straight. No soloist likes the drummer or the pianist playing too hard behind them….Miles hated the pianist comping behind him which is what the argument was about in the famous recording session where Monk got pissed off and walked out.
@tomscott1741
@tomscott1741 3 года назад
That's actually not accurate. Miles just did not like the way monk comped behind him! He said the way Monk supported a horn, was only good for guys who played like Johnny Griffin or John Coltrane

Looking and listening more closely , this group performance is not that flash. Lots of tension / aggression . They seem a bit cowed and nervous. Drummer is hyped up and over playing.

Music is expression. If thats how they're feeling at the time then its good that you've picked it up.

Hubbard is trying too hard to impress but is rather irritating.

Peter Stephen, I disagree. I think the playing is fantastic.
@nyvcr502
@nyvcr502 6 лет назад
GeoCoppens, Freddie had by that time been playing for so many years that he had reached the point where he was passed the technique of conventional trumpet playing and reaching for something new. He is not trying to show off. You are misreading what's happening. You need to rethink the situation objectively meaning without emotional bias to the contrary. I have been listening to music for too long to not know what I'm talking about. Cheers.
