Is it only me who thinks Freddie is perhaps the most underrated out of the 3 kings?

The youngest, so less respect. Saw him twice, once at Winterland with BB and once by himself in a nightclub, one of the best of all time. That said, I think Albert was the best of the three Kings.

Funny you said that, cause that’s exactly what happened to me. I heard 3 songs in a row by Freddie King and said to myself, “Damn, Ive got to learn how to play guitar.” So after being a drummer since I was a young kid, I took guitar lessons at age 30.

Freddie was technically the best guitar player of the three Kings just in terms of his dexterity and fluidity. His masterpiece "Hideaway" contains some difficult licks that the other two would have been unable to replicate. Albert King had the tone and sustain thing down. B.B. took the T-Bone Walker's pioneering guitar work to another level and graced us with numerous timeless songs. But Freddie had the flying fingers.

Back in the day, before I was regenerated, you could get into the clubs when you were 18. Three weeks after my 18th birthday, I took my girlfriend to a club to see a blues player named Freddie King. My first time seeing live music in a setting like that, I was up close, and Freddie was a large man, almost 6'5". He seemed larger than life and was so good at what he did. I was awed. After all these years, I still have the same girl and occasionally still sneak a listen to Freddie when no one is around. Eight months after I saw him, he died of ulcers and pancreatitis. He was only 42, but had been performing for 26 years by then, and the hard life caught up with him. This video is as I remember him. It must have been made not long before he died. Enjoy things while you can. But remember, fun stuff will soon be lost to dust and cobwebs. In a little while, no one will remember Freddie, or me, or that night. Instead of focusing on old, lost things, follow the One whose words are eternal: John 6:68.

He's a bluesman, not like many stations played the blues. Thanks to YT there's a lot of people hearing this music for the first time. Way back around 1975 I worked at a restaurant in the Chicago area and the guy I worked with was about 10 years older than me and always found a blues show on his old Zenith tube radio. He was the guy that told me the LED Zeppelin that I listened to was actually written by Delta bluesman. Of course you'd never know it by reading the credits on the back cover of the album but that's a whole nother story.

I read somewhere that when Freddie King was around 16 years old, he wanted to play in the blues clubs around Chicago. But first of all he was to young, and a few places told him that he sounded to much like BB King, so they were not interested. And that was how he developed his wery unique way of singing! He wanted to sound like Freddie King and no-one else. This guy kicked ass! Imagine that, being dumped because you sound like BB King. Freddie didn't take it. He is my all time blues hero! ; )

When I was in high school my aunt played me Hideaway back to back with Clapton’s version and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s version. I was blown away and eventually I read and listened to everything I could get my hands on about him. If you don’t have a copy of his greatest early greatest hits (we’re talking late 50s - early 60s recordings.) This was the music that helped make Clapton “god.” Tore Down, Love me With a Feeling and of course Have You Ever Loved a Woman which Clapton covered on Derek and the Dominoes. Check out my thesis on him he was, in my view, the King of King’s with all due respect to BB and Albert fans. BB of course being the original but his sound got a lot more laid back as he aged while Freddie played hard and loud like a heavy metal blues player.

Beautiful. Man, when I made the connection to that homage from Grand Funk Railroad to Freddie King, I felt like the deepest sense of like, "Man, that was like a total bro move."

Damn! That riff beginning at 2:20 (ish) kills me every time! Smoking talent with the guitar and a voice to match. Truly a King!
