Joe Mejia, on bass, author of hits Te Traigo Estas Flores, Las Palomas, Tu Tienes Que Vivir Conmigo, Una Paloma Blanca, Un Terroncito De Azucar, Dame Mas Amor, Mirada Que Fascina and many others.
Joe Mejia had toured extensively with acts like Tony De La Rosa and Oscar Martinez before joining a lesser known Freddie. The first change Joe made was change Freddie’s music style from Tropical Cumbia to Tejano. Joe came with new ideas, arrangements and a distinct style of songwriting that would produce iconic songs. Also, changing the rhythm and horn section for the sound that is heard today. The difference was noticed immediately.
JOE MEJIA-second voice and bass player- wrote the majority of Freddie's hits. Many people don't know this, because Freddy never gave him the credit and recognition.
Gary Russo thank you Gary for recognizing all my dad's efforts. He also lead the melodies and how they were gonna be played. Freddie because of his success was able to purchas his own recording studio later named Freddie records. I often wonder if Freddie had not asked my dad for his collaboration if Freddie records would of happened? It may of changed the music industry and all the acts that Freddie has recorded and managed under his label. My dad toured with Tony De La Rosa for seven years prior to Freddie collaboration. The first thing he did was change Freddies style of music since he was coming from a conjunto background. I'm a drummer and a Bass player. My dad has a BMI catalog of over about 90 songs he has registered as the author and composer.

I was one of the lucky person that heard him live when he played.Watched him play his music on tv on the domingo pena show back in the day. Played his albums and 8 tracks until sunrise only the best of the best music I grew up with in my teenage years when going to the dance was the only thing on our minds thanks Freddie.
Lets see..I was in the sixth grade when my older brother came home with Freddies "new album", so it must have been 1971 or 1972. That album also had some of his other hits like: Te Traigo Estas Flores, Una Estrellita lloro, Con Carino, and others.. hope this helps.
Freddie Martinez made some great Tejano melodies that were dead-on during his time and even now. We always include Freddie in our current Tejano music mixes in Michigan and enjoy dancing to his songs. Listening to his jams makes me remember of the times we visited my family in Corpus Christi. We had some big-a....family gatherings listening to the best of the best and Freddie was at the top of the list. Enjoy, GP
