Sing FREDDIE MERCURY Medley - Learn To Sing In Freddie's Style And Range - Lessons From Ken Tamplin
Vocal Lessons from Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy will teach you how to sing high notes, how to increase your vocal range, and your voice will grow like CrAzY!
Ken had pnuemonia when he recorded this demo, but he's not one to cancel shows or recording dates. You can hear the congestion in his voice when he speaks, but that didn't stop him from recording anyway.

I get so many requests from people saying I want to sing like Freddie Mercury. How did Freddie Mercury sing, you know, and, and, and…
First of all Freddie Mercury, I don't think even ever had ever had a single vocal lesson as far as I know. Now I know he studied in a lot of music schools early on for piano, and actually art, believe it or not. But you're talking about a guy who was actually born, I think, in Tanzania. He was of Asian descent or Indian descent, I should say and grew up in India, you know, grew up in Tanzania. He didn't actually make it to England until eight, nine, ten, or something like that when some big war in Tanzania took place.
I have it here: "He was a British musician, singer, songwriter best known as the lead vocalist for the rock band Queen. Now, I think even Freddie would think of himself as more of a musician or a composer or someone that was into musicals, in fact I don't think it's coincidence that the second album was named "a night at the Opera."
So you have a guy who is a composer, a musician and does things in a very orchestral kind of way. And I say that, too, because he even admitted at one point that he could barely read music, so how interesting that he went to all of these music schools and yet the thing he found most important was truly having a passion. And I think a lot of us want the quick and easy road out. You know, Freddie had a tough life, and he worked really hard, and you can even hear it from the singing, you know "I work hard every day of my life, I work till I ache, my bones, at the end of the day I take home my hard earned pay all on my own. I get down on my knees and I start to pray, till the tears run down from my eyes. Lord, find me somebody to love."
So you see this expression of overcoming and working hard, and frustration and anguish and joy. You know "We Are The Champions", "We Will Rock You". You know, these anthemic things, and yet at the same time he can come and he can take this natural God-given, four octave range, and then he can sing like kind of an Elvis-ish sort of song we just heard, which is "Find Me Somebody To Love", and also "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."
So anyway, you take "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and he was into Cliff Richards, he was into Little Richard, you know some of these old-school guys. But anyway, I also wanted to point out a couple of things here, again. He says "His childhood in India he began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. In 1954 at the age of eight, Mercury was also sent to study at St. Peter's school, a British style boarding school for boys. So the guy got stuck in a boarding school, right? When he finally meets… He goes through several bands, too, I want to add. I think he went through maybe seven or eight bands before he actually landed Queen. At an early, early age, I hear so many people complaining about two or three bands that they've gone through, you know, right? So he goes through band, after band, after band, and ironically, when he finally lands, you know, the few players that we see in Queen… Guess what? Brian May contracts hepatitis, and I think he's out of the band for the first year or so. My all - time favorite guitar player almost didn't make the band, right? But then, as fate would have it, you know, later this all came together, and again, we know them as Queen. But I also want to emphasize one thing. He got nodes towards about the middle or three quarters of the way into his career, and he went from being able to sing F6, you know, way above high C, all the way down to around a B or an A, because he developed nodules on his cords, and he refused to get surgeries. So, we see, you know, that it would have been cool had he taken some lessons, and had he done some things the right way, you know we might have had a much better performance towards the end of his life as we saw at the beginning of his life.

Regarding my "How To Sing Like"People say "series. People say you should't try to sound like someone else. Be yourself!I And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone. But we all have influences and it's THOSE influences that start our fire and inspire us to sing to begin with. And it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own touch and style that makes us great. The more influences you have, the more you will have in your "singing tool box" to work with. In all of my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but I have a flavor of the artist and is meant to demonstrate how their "style" can be achieved safely in the wake of either the original artist losing their voice, or those that try to imitate them, This showcases range, vocal timber and style for different color and flavors for diverse singing.

+Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Hi! I want to sing, but I can´t manage my throat to open up :( I sing with my stomach, but when I trie to sing "FUULLL" out loud, it´s only my throat and I sound like a sucker...what is it I doing wrong ? And...Why aren´t you singing with a band with that voice ? You can almost "choose" you band with that voice !! Cheers

+Belseful I cover this in my singing course. You need to learn good open throat technique. Keeping the back of the throat open when you sing with strong diaphragmatic support. This is where to start. You can check out my curse at KenTamplinVocalAcademy.com

+Tanner Sandell Hi Tanner. Good post. Let's be very clear about something. Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest singing performers of all time - Period. I have seen him live many many times over the years. I want to separate Live performances from studio performances. The fact is, the studio recording of Innuendo and The Show Must Go On is actually some of his greatest work from a singing standpoint. Towards the very end you actually heard Freddie manage his voice better than any other time in his career, even under illness. A majority of his career, about the middle to three quarters of the way through, Freddy often lost his voice live, Took shortcuts for high notes and had audiences singing choruses for him. Not that he's expected to be perfect, but conditioning his voice through the process of this would have minimized or eliminated this altogether. Thanks for your post.

Stop it with the comments not sounding like the original singers. He is demonstrating their techniques not making an impression. Every human voice on earth has different amounts of hamrmonics,overtones and formants so it's impossible for one singer to siund like another one 100%. Ken is a master at his job probably one of the best vocal coaches on earth.

What i meant is people say you're trying to imitate Freddie's voice or take his place (clearly can see this in top comments) , but the title is clear: you want to teach the style Freddie adopted in his songs. Keep up the good work.

I see this more as a Fantastic Singer singing his own interpretation of these famous Queen songs. Freddie had a bit more growl and raw emotion in his voice. With that said, fantastic demonstration. I hate it when people say no one should be allowed to sing Queen because they'll never be as good. Bullshit. Sing whatever you want. Who cares if your better or worse. I like singing Queen. I have the range for it, so I'll sing it. As simple as that. If people ever call me out for trying to capture some of the spirit of my idol, I'll just tell them to piss off. I know I'll never be as good, it's not the point. The point is having a good time and entertaining the folk watching you.
@kentamplin

Thanks for your open-minded comment, ericpierre53. I have nothing but admiration for Freddie's voice and the incredible impact he had on music during his lifetime. I also highly encourage others to follow in his footsteps and sing his great musical masterpieces, knowing that there will always only be one Freddie Mercury. Imitation is the highest form of praise. While I prefer to emulate, rather than imitate, I think we honor Freddie by keeping his music alive on the live stage, in our performances and our repertoire, and our recordings and videos. We've lost too many of our vocal heroes. Let's keep their memories alive.

Regarding My How To Sing Like... Series: People say "I want to sound like me and not anyone else." And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone. But we all have influences, and it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own style that makes us great. Learning a difficult cover song where the bar is set high, is an excellent grading scale to see how well our technique is working. This is also true for learning different styles as this increases our vocabulary for diverse singing and helps us find our own unique voice. In my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but seek to show you how to sing in their "style" safely. Check Out One Of My Original Songs Featuring Some Of My Singing Influences (singing both soft and heavy) Here: How To Sing Like David Coverdale - Glenn Hughes - Lou Gramm - Paul Rodgers When Choosing A Vocal Coach Or Singing Program, Make Sure The Coach Can Prove Their Technique With Their Own Voice & Their Students Voices Whether It's Cover Songs Or Originals. I just found your channel, Ken, and I’m loving it! I think you did a great job with Freddie and I am VERY defensive about my ♥️. 😂. Ken, you probably know this but there were a few amazing parts of his anatomy that God gifted him with in order to make his spectacular voice out of this world!!! Freddie had a 4 octave vocal range Freddie’s natural voice is baritone but, he could very easily switch to tenor (which he had to do for MANY of Queen’s songs. The typical vibrato is between 4.5-6.9 hertz (I’m pretty sure) and Freddie’s is 7.04 He had an “irregular” vibrato He had four extra incisors (hence, his large mouth) Possibly the most amazing - he is able to use “subharmonics”. We are all born with vocal chords and ventricular folds in our throat. Most of us are unable to utilize our ventricular folds (they went the way of the appendix and the gall bladder - we no longer need them but, the body still produces them). Certain people can access those chords. Think Tibetan monk chants. They were most likely taught through the generations how to access them but, I’m pretty sure Freddie just came out of his mama with the ability to use them! Anyway, someone may already put these tidbits in the comments but, if not, enjoy your new Freddie trivia. When people say he was more than a real mortal well, perhaps he was!!! ♥️♥️♥️

Freddie’s a legend. And the person singing in the video has done better then quite a few (lot) people I’ve heard and there saying there the best and sound like Freddie. But no one can sound like Freddie. He was/is the king 👑
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 5 лет назад
True, Nell. Freddie was the only Freddie Mercury, and nobody can beat him at that. Even people who imitate him well, and maybe even look a bit like him will never be equal to him. I had pnuemonia when this was recorded, but that's no excuse. I still wouldn't be Freddie. My video is to show that his songs are not untouchable. We honor Freddie by keeping his music alive and by encouraging others to keep on singing it. You don't have to pretend to BE him. We should ALL sing along to Freddie's songs or re-present them in his honor.

He may have never had a lesson but he was simply untouchable... On innuendo you had a dying man hitting insane notes like on " show must go on " and while you listen to it it's almost unbelievable that he's dying of aids. That's what separates him from the rest. I don't think there's any other singers alive that could sing like that with such power and intensity while sick to the point they weigh 100lbs and are as pail as a ghost.

Freddy Mercury's voice had soul, a strength and a personality within that can't be taught. He sang from deep inside to show outside the emotions he felt while creating songs. So many people can have a good train and a good voice and the result can be good, but still they'll be so far away from the feelings his voice gives to the world. His Energy can't be copycat

Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"? I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieve this "stress free" singing. (this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as-if they are the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept) This is nonsense and here's why: Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete. Think of it like this: When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?" (Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before). But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal." But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress." Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency. Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training. In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina. This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training. With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's OK to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training. If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

@kentamplin

***** when singing powerful rock songs like this it requires a tremendous amount of air. What you see is me taking a quick hit in the lung and then immediately dropping my shoulders to let my abdomen and diaphragm do all the work. Especially with songs like Freddy's where there are long phrases and belting high range there is no way around taking in large amounts of air into the long then holding your breath to mitigate that air with substantial abdominal strength. I cover this thoroughly in my singing course

Wow you are an incredible singer with amazing range, good on you darling. Yet instead of trying to sound like the greatest singer ever, you could front your own band with your amazing voice. Great singers are so few and far between and you are a great singer. I write, arrange, record, and play everything except bass and drums. You are so talented, and an awesome vocalist, I would forge my own path and not try to sound like the late and great Freddie Mercury. Either way you have incredible range and power. God bless my friend.

King David- Thank you. Regarding my: "How To Sing Like" series. People say "You should sound like you and no one else". And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone. But we all have influences, and it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own style that makes us great. In addition, If we pick a difficult cover song where the bar is set high, this is an excellent grading scale to see how well our singing technique is working. This is also true for learning in different styles as this increases our vocabulary and tool box for diverse singing and helps us find what we like or don't like to build our own unique voice. In all of my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but I have a flavor of the original artist demonstrating their "style" safely when often the original artist lost their voice due to bad technique. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Tamplin

I love the flow of that song. The entire 5150 album was outstanding. I am going to start listening to your songs too. That performance with you and Jeff Scott Soto blow back my remaining hair. Not really, and this is the biggest copout mindset that seems to be a common thread in the artistic dialog running through this millennial generation... And Ken, who I respect (but I think his Freddie is a near miss) should know better than to agree with that sentiment. A man doesn't have to be a craftsman to have taste or judge a person who had placed themselves in front of a person, presuming that their ability is worth the taking of this person, or entire crowds ten minutes, hour or two. A person does not have to have gone to film school to walk out of a movie saying "I didn't like that flick." Honest critique and hearing the truth about your work is utterly important and not to be avoided if you want to progress. Ken knows, or should know the jazz musicians maxim (Dolphy said it) "the more you learn, the more there is to learn." And critique is a very big part of that. If you invite people to pay money, click on a link, stop their day to watch your work or believe in you as a teacher, and you deliver that crowd a stinker of spoiled trout, they have every right to let you know that. Go tell the people at Amateur Night at the Apollo that they are not entitled if they haven't taken vocal classes or can't otherwise sing that they therefore have no right to boo a horrible act off the stage. Beyond the bounds of that rough hall, generally, so long as a person isn't being vicious and sadistic in their telling you they don't like your act (and teaching is an act like any other) there is absolutely nothing wrong with a person articulating the natural feeling they have inside that 1) their time and or money has been wasted, and 2) this presumptuous bad act needs to wake up out of their self involved fog. Final anecdote. Charlie Parker, who is without question THE foundational, overwhelmingly influential alto jazz saxophonist of the Twentieth Century, was heckled off of a stage after a bad performance in his youth. He thereby locked himself in his room for a very long stretch of constant and maniacal, obsessive practice, determined to never suffer that embarrassment ever again. And he never did: that harsh criticism awoke the genius in him and he literally changed his instrument and all music forever. Political correctness and fear of slight abrasion can go too far. And telling a person that a middling performance must be honored if you're not a craftsman in that art form is positively absurd. Tl;Dr. I know. But think about it.

Dude I applaude you for making this video. Its not everyone who would put themselves up against Freddie for comparison and criticism.

@sermerlin1
@sermerlin1 9 лет назад
+Charley Bomps He pulled it off in his own vocal style. You can hear the freddies style but you don't hear freddie because simply he doesn't have freddie like pipes.

i don't hear the style of freddie anywhere in this,i sing in the style of freddie ;that guy thinks he can sound like every singer in the world when in reality he can't sing at all
@sermerlin1
@sermerlin1 9 лет назад
Charley Bomps what are you on about mate? He IS NOT trying to sound like freddie he is doing his OWN thing but singing in tune freddie mercury sings but just by singing in tune with how freddie sang you can hear freddie through it especially when he accents the same. He doesn't try to sound like ANY SINGER but himself. It's his way of how to sing the way the other singers sing and you know what? He's doing fucking beast job of proving that he can sing SHIT LOAD of styles and varieties. When he says "how to sing like freddie mercury" It means that he can SHOW YOU how to sound like freddie. How to hit the notes freddie is hitting. If you have freddie like pipes you will sound exactly like freddie. This is the only teacher that i've discovered so far on youtube and internet that's actually singing and proving he knows his shit and he knows the right techniques to pull it off without going ape shit after one song. The others just talk and talk and talk and never demonstrate that they can actually sing nor their students. Check painkiller cover from ken. He pulled off what rob pulled off ONLY in studio. PLUS rob was probably taking a rest before pulling some stuff on the recordings while ken did all in ONE FUCKIN' GO. I can't honestly take you serious if you say he can't sing at all. I wish i had money to get ken to tutor me and build me up technically how to use my body to sing with ZERO strain while singing all the different styles whether it be pure screaming or reaching top of the notes i believed i could never reach. Peace out.

It doesn't sound like Freddie Mercury. It sounds like... Adam Lambert :P In anyway, you have a nice voice :)

+Matias Torres Dude, don't insult Ken like that. Ken is a far better vocalist than that pharaoh of fake vibrato.

pilotamurorei I don't think so. I heard Adam singing in Argentina and he is a really good singer. He has a great voice.

+Matias Torres hey dude! I'm not being sarcastic but, Ken showed us how to SING like Freddie, not SOUND like Freddie. But we could all agree in one thing: Ken Tamplin is Legit!

+Matias Torres Evidently you only know Adam from his time with Queen or you wouldn't think that. Research your point please.

Mr. Ken you never disappoint! This is NOT a comparison guysand if you are thinking that way you're missing the point...This is about technique and Ken; you're second to none when it come to technique! God bless brother! |\m/
