A teenager from the future gets sent back in time? What? But he wasn’t sent back in time. He was sent to the town over, and when they return to Springwood, there are still no children left just as the opening text described. The only thing Freddy needed help with was traveling beyond the borders of Springwood.

This is the first time ANYONE has watched this film and thought time travel was used. The movie takes place 10 years from “now,” so it can show that Freddy was never defeated and left unchecked, was able to finish what he set out to do.

I'm very relieved I'm not the only person confused by the time travel discussion.

Ok, so real quick: There is no time travel in this movie. John Doe doesn’t get amnesia from traveling through time. He smashes his head on a rock, when thrown over the town border and outside of Springwood. It’s Tracy, not Stacy. It’s Spencer, not Dillon. The remake was made in 2010, not 2008. That said, I do agree that this is the weakest of the classic Elm Street movies. But I still get a lot of entertainment from it. It’s very quotable and some of the wild performances end up working to give the movie a weird charm.

Time travel? Also, her looking at her hand weirdly is because the movie was in 3-D.

Hi JoBlo Originals, this is Rodd Matsui writing from Los Angeles, to whatever planet you are on. I supervised a large percentage of the prosthetic makeups in the film. Right off the bat, it’s pleasing to see that you watched it, or part of it. I really enjoyed working on this film, and I have to thank John Buechler of MMI, Inc., who hired me to build the makeups and apply them on set. The Carlos sequence alone was more than ten days of filming because of the number of makeup changes! Can you imagine how much time went into building those prosthetics and puppets, before we even took it on set to film? This was a great adventure, and I can’t wait to hear you explain time travel in the film, because nobody remembers it being in the script, leading to a rumor that you might possibly be intoxicated. By the way, MMI, Inc., which you mention, was contracted to do any prosthetics and puppets involving fantasy violence, including injuries to Freddy. MMI provided no “VFX” or opticals. Freddy’s makeup itself was supervised by the excellent David Miller - but you also see MMI’s Freddy makeup, created to match Miller’s design, for the head-expansion scene. That was created by MMI supervisors Chris Robbins and Nick Marra, with stretching arms created by Jeff Farley. I should also mention that whenever you see our fake heads (of Carlos or other characters) you generally are seeing custom wigs and hairpieces constructed by none other than Jack Bricker, who created all the wigs for Arnold’s character, both the rubber heads and the makeup versions, in “The Terminator”. They are made of real human hair tied one strand at a time, and those alone took him many weeks to build, in his own studio. We went into reshoots to make the end fight scene longer and bloodier (what we filmed the first time wasn’t enough) so for those scenes the Miller crew and the MMI crew worked alongside each other, both crews gluing appliances to the charming Robert Englund. That’s where you see all the stabbing and knives and such. MMI built four dummies of Freddy to blow up, and regular special effects department Reel FX supervised the HUGE pyro charges that went inside the Freddy dummies, which were in fact filled with bags of fake guts we made. The explosions (4 takes) were so dangerous that most of the crew were ordered to go across the street, as far away as possible, and hide behind cars just in case flaming debris came flying our way! “Freddy’s Dead” was the INTENDED ending for the series which New Line believed had run out of steam, hence the title. It had the opposite effect of making enough money to justify further sequels and films! That’s very pleasing to consider, in retrospect.

He didn't send the kid into the past. When he reached the limits of Springwood the kid was knocked out of the dream world. That's why he needed his Daughter to bring him past the limits of Springwood.

I swear, some of the hate this film gets is manufactured by ignorance because there was definitely no time travel in this movie. It's definitely not the worst in the franchise. I love the kill montage at the end!

Freddy's Dead was so different and absurd that I actually have a fondness for it I cannot shake despite it's perceived badness.

It was never about time travel. Freddy was confined to Springwood. When he killed all the teens, he sent John Doe to another area to bring him more victims or have his child take him to another area so he could continue his killing spree. How did someone get such a simple plot so twisted?

I first saw this in the theater in 1991 when I was nine years old, and even I understood it better than this grown man did.

I was 9 years old when I saw this movie in theater. I knew back then what the “10 years from now” line meant and wasn’t confused by the timeline of the movie. So, even as a small child I had a better understanding of this movie than you do now, as a grown man. I must be in the wrong one line of work.

The way the dream child ended was the perfect send off, the only good thing about this movie was the cameo from Johnny Depp

It's an awful Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but it still has it's fun moments. Like Carlos and Spencer's deaths, Rosanne and Tom Arnold's cameo, and the silly dream demons.

I like this channel, but what the hell are you talking about? There’s no time traveling movie and nobody gets sent back anywhere. The movie takes place 10 years from the time it came out which was 1991. John is not sent through portal, that hole that he leaves is him leaving the dreamworld and entering the real world. You might want to rethink keeping this one up…

Time travel?! The WHOLE movie takes place in the future. Either you read a plot synopsis edited by a troll, you watched a weird version or you're experiencing a supposed Mandela effect.

I have fond memories of this movie. It came out when I was 14 and I bought a ticket for some other movie but I snuck into see Freddy's Dead. It was the 1st time I snuck into an R rated movie and I have always loved watching this one.

Also , the glove room and MULTIPLE different KILLER gloves was pretty awesomeness… even if it was stuck in a bullshit origin story ..

My fave scene is when he breaks down all the times he was killed....and although cheesy, the power glove line.

Ok I am not over-defending Freddys Dead, but I did work on it, so I have some perspectives that you might not. Like EVERY Elm Street movie, ( and I worked on 4 of them), it was extremely over-ambitious for the budget. They really wanted to do a 3D sequence for the finale, so that added a huge additional expense. New Line always had big fights with the MPAA to obtain an R rating, so this go-round they opted to up the comedy and downplay the gore and horror. There was one sequence with Stephen Root as the kookie guy in the school that was originally going to have a gruesome reveal where we see he had stapled his eyes open to stay awake.....that was cut for ratings and cost I think. The Freddy as the Wicked Witch thing was also originally going to be spoof of Indiana Jones with Freddy on a skeleton horse but that was also cut for budget reasons. I personally think Freddys make up looks poor in this one, but Robert England was getting pretty sick of the hours and hours in the make-up chair....this version cut the time for him way down. (I think Kevin Yeagers make up in Dream Warriors is the best) When I watch clips and stills from Freddys Dead I cringe at some of the work I personally did.....But other things look great, Tight budgets always force creatives to make compromises., but the sequences that work (Like Carlos' hearing aid death) still hold up well. Im just glad Freddy is NOT REALLY dead, with rumors of another re-boot floating. We shall see........

We need a _"Freddy's Dead Deconstructed_ Deconstructed: What Went Wrong In _Freddy's Dead Deconstructed"_ video! Like many people have mentioned there's so many mistakes here. The character names, the really weird time travel misunderstanding, but the worst has got to be implying Freddy's makeup was any good.

My issue with this movie is that it doesn't maintain the continuity of previous films; I was invested in the storyline of Alice and the Elm Street survivors. I don't remember the time travel aspect you mentioned; Freddy simply placed John Doe at the border of Springwood, the place where the dream realm ends. Freddy desires access to the entire world. Its like Nightmare 4 with Alice. However, the time gap between Part 5 and this movie is oddly structured and seems underdeveloped.

I’ve always had a great time with Freddy’s Dead and have always considered it to be better than Part 5 and all are better than the remake. I echo the sentiment from others about never seeing this as time travel but rather the town limit for new kids. Freddy is my mountaintop horror franchise and I love JoBlo so I always appreciate a fresh perspective even if I don’t agree. I especially enjoy when my man Fred is the topic.

The craziest part to me is the underuse of 3D in it, because a 3-D themed nightmare sounds interesting and they do like 2 things with it in the last 5-10 minutes.

What started to kill the franchise was when the really corny humor began to take center stage in part 4 and 5. I think they realized that and in an attempt to "actually kill the franchise for good" they went to the next level of goof ball humor and not only jumped the shark but intentionally flew over it in a 747, lol. It almost did successfully kill the franchise like they wanted though. The mission was to turn the fans off and leave them not wanting more.

Also, Freddy literally states the plot of the movie during John’s death scene. He tells him he needed his daughter, Maggie, to piggyback in her mind across the town border. The movie establishes in the first scene that he can’t cross the border. He says his daughter is “going to take me to a whole new playground.” Then they visibly show him entering her mind. AND THEN they show the barrier that prevented him from leaving the town shatters as he crosses over it with Maggie. And later, when he first talks to Maggie, he says “You’re my blood. Only you could’ve brought me out.” The movie couldn’t be more clear about the plot.

A movie that killed the franchise so bad when Bob Shay crawled back to Craven to save the franchise Craven said basically Freddy has been damaged irrevocably, my “new nightmare” has to have a new but similar monster.

I disagree with the makeup though, to me this is the worst makeup on Freddy, his face looks like plastic. There are some good things I like about the movie which was a little more backstory to Freddy, but the saga went downhill with the fourth one, when they replaced Patricia Arquette.

Something about this has been bothering me since I watched this. The time travel thing doesn't make sense, and I was wondering, was this particular script / episode outsourced or something? Like, i don't see how ANYONE gets that implication from the material presented? Maybe I need to watch it again I'd get if an AI tried to watch this and drew a weird conclusion I can get the dates being wrong on the remake 2008 vs 2010 as maybe thats when the reboot was announced or in script or something but thats a minor detail I'm not calling shananigans but something seems off

I really enjoy Freddy’s Dead, it’s like this early 90’s time capsule filled with so many it’s-so-bad-it’s-good moments and lines. Still, it’s undeniably a weak horror film and a testament to studio greed milking a franchise for every penny. I like to occasionally turn my brain off when watching a movie and have fun, but those so inclined for more substance in a movie will definitely be disappointed in Freddy’s Dead.

I saw this at the theater opening weekend and the tape snapped 15 minutes into the movie and we had to come back the next day to finish watching it. The theater would not give us our money back that day. So, it was already a bad sign.😅
