This is one grave I really need to visit and pay my respects too. Fredrick was my cousins great great Grandfather and Fredrick really is a spitting image of my uncle Eric Fleet.
He was abandoned by his mum and put in a children’s home and later adopted. The only family he had was his wife who he was legally separated from for five years before her death, and his daughter. His daughter couldn’t afford to bury him so he was put in a paupers grave. When this stone was put in (with help from a U.K. titanic society but with no permissions) they tried to find living family but found none. After the event some supposed ‘family’ came out of the woodwork hoping to gain compensation but not one could prove that they were related to him. I have a large piece written about his life from his own words and separate sources including his daughter and brother in law if you are interested? He used to sell papers on the street as a pension mer and there are photos of him doing that. He was not homeless at the point of death. He was asked to look for a new home as was agreed when he moved in, but hadn’t moved out. He went to his daughter the day before he died crying and depressed and she let him leave. She said she had no idea he would hang himself despite him staying his intentions as a cry for help. She let him go. I’m assuming if you are related to him you are related to her, the woman who let him walk away in despair?
@@NailHeavenAshford I know a very small amount about him other than what I have found out on the internet. He apparently was my cousins great, great grandfather. I would be interested to find out a bit more about him.
My Grandfather sailed with Fredrick when he went backto sea after the Titanic disaster. His name is next to my Grandfathers on a ships manifest. To see it go to the Ellis Island immigration centre.
@@vetworker Hello Dan. As you know the Carpathia was sent to rescue survivors from the Titanic the Captains name was Rostrom. I have copies of my grandfathers sea papers with him serving with Rostrom on another ship. One of the engine room crew was a relation from Southhampton. My Grandfather was born in 1878 and after being wounded in the Boar war in 1902 spent the rest of his life at sea in the Merchant Navy. My dad told me his father was as hard as nails and walked around every where in barefeet. They were different times and the men were hard he is buried in Portsmouth.
The Titanic is one of the first things that got me into history, many moons ago (when I was eight or nine years old). I am currently twenty-two years old (I turned 22 recently, on 21 January). I have a lot of respect for Frederick Fleet. Speaking of the Titanic, it was First Officer Murdoch's birthday yesterday (28 February). I also really respect First Officer Murdoch. They are both some of my heroes. I just discovered your channel. I am glad you do these types of videos. Greetings from the U.S. (Wisconsin, to be precise).
Besides being on Titanic and losing his beloved wife, Mr Fleet also served in both the World Wars. So he really did endure more than his share of death & tragedy. What an overwhelming life, who could blame him for ending it.
I know Charles Lightoller (Second Officer on the Titanic) served in WWI and helped evacuate those on Dunkirk during WWII. Both survivors of the Titanic (Frederick Fleet and Charles Lightoller) did see a lot. I have a lot of respect for them both! They are some of my heroes!
Awww bless him, i can't imagine how his head was after the trauma of the Titanic, he was worth much more than a Paupers grave. I've seen the documentaries on this ship and it makes me unbelievably sad so i empathise with him, it's one of those things for me where i wish i could wake up and find that it never happened. He's a hero but he won't have felt like he was. Rip lovely man, thank you for saving people, it's a shame you didn't have the support you so much needed with your mental health. Xx
Thank you so much for paying your respects and sharing your day with us. When I first heard Fredrick’s life story I felt immensely sad. He was such a handsome man who went through so much pain.
How sad is that to be buried in a paupers grave and be forgotten, poor man to carry all that survivor's guilt, seeing people drowning and he would have probably known that there were not enough lifeboats and there was nothing he can do, no therapy then you just had to get on with it, once again thanks Paul.
Great series paul thanks for sharing i love hearing stuff about titanic and who managed to survive that fatefull night they must have been terrified and yes the post traumatic stress disorder they had to go through must have been horendous for the poor people Rip to everyone on that ship
What a sad story nice your telling his story no wonder he had depression after what this poor man has went through hope your at peace now god love you ❤️❤️
Thanks for his story which was a tough one and it was so high in the crows next and alot colder up there and the water was 32 degrees or less. I hate the cold so he and everyone else were so scared. Yes very interested in Titantic so saw your video about the last known survivor was gone i had to watch.
Paul, Thanks for a great presentation. I have always been interested in the Titanic and have visited Mr Fleet’s grave a couple of times. Always had problems finding it! You instructions will make it easier next time. As alway, a very respectful presentation! Bob
Thanks for featuring Frederick Fleet. I'm interested in the Titanic and you can often find me in cemeteries taking photos of Titanic graves and memorials. In West End Cemetry in Southampton, you'll find the grave of Capt Arthur Rostron. He was in charge of the ship that raced to help the Titanic
I went to Captain Rostrons grave and while I was there a large ginger cat walked over the grave. I have many many books about the titanic and Captain Rostron is said to have owned a cat
Hey Paul thanks for your wonderful videos they are so interesting... I love the fact that you actually talk to your audience and include us in your journey makes you feel that we are with you.. When i was a small boy i went and stayed with my Aunt and Uncle for a holiday they lived in a small place on Hampshire called 'West Wellows' i used to walk around the little country lanes in the morning, where i found a tiny church and in the grounds of it was 'Florence Nightngale' grave... It would be great you could find it after all these years... Keep up what you do👍
The whole story is so captivating and I'm never tired of hearing about the facts and stories of the passengers and crew, and my late nan was born on the actual day.
Hi Paul, Thank you for your tour and excellent commentary, you get me in all the time. The Titanic still, stirs deep human emotions more than any ship that's sailed the ocean's. Literally millions of words written, engineer's , all manner of programs have dissected every inch of that liner. Yet after all these year's we still shed tears for those lost soul's. I guess because as humans we are all connected and feel each other's pain. Just a small but perhaps significant point, as a diver and having dived in cold water, Hypothermia is a danger without a wet suit or dry suit, my thoughts are those in the water that night with regular clothes, would have gone peacefully. As you pointed out not all died that night but were still victims RIP.
There were binoculars on the Titanic that night. They were in a locker actually in the crows nest with Fleet. But the key was missing. Fleet always said if he had binoculars he’d of seen the iceberg in time. Poor man. His grave is on my visit list. I shall look out for the trees.
He wouldn't have done , the weather was bad that night which made binoculars next to useless and the speed of the ship caused the accident , the iceberg literally came out of nowhere ...
I mean binoculars is not going to do anything if there's no moon and the ocean is a flat calm. Its pitch black man and the only way you're going to spot anything is if an object starts blocking the stars behind it which is what Frederick experienced that night when he first 'spotted' the ice berg. He didn't actually spot the berg, the saw an absence of stars.
I watch Paul's videos when I've had a busy day and I'm a bit stressed the videos are so chilled and calm I think it's Paul's presenting style that makes the videos seem relaxed
Great video's, looking at the grave of Frederick Fleet reminds me of the story of Robert Jones who won a VC at Rorkes Drift, he also commited suicide and his gravestone is facing the wrong way round as at the time people who killed themselves could not be buried in concercrated grounds. Be a good one to visit Paul but is a long journey to Hereforshire.
Zulu may be a good film but there are inaccuracies. Private Hook who also won a VC is portrayed as a layabout whereas in real life he was a dedicated professional soldier. Fortunately we seem to be reaching a time when people realise that people who commit suicide are ill.
Hi Paul, The grave of Theresa De Simone is just further down on the same side of the cemetery. She was murdered in Southampton in 1979, her murder led to the longest proven cases of a miscarriage of justice in English legal history.
Hi Paul ! Titanic is really a tragedy 1500 people dead in a sea as cold as ice.Nobody knows who's responsible at least not yet!!!May God keep the Mister Fleet's soul!!! Very touching video!!! God Bless!! Denis from France.
Hi Paul...love the videos ....point of order....they did have binoculars on the Titanic but I can't remember if Fredrick forgot to take the key that unlocked the door where they were kept in the crows nest or if they couldn't be found for some reason. Either way they couldn't access the unit where the binoculars were kept. Another controversial point that's been brought up more than once. Maybe if they'd spotted the iceberg earlier MAYBE the ship would have missed it. Keep up the good work ....
Hi Paul I would just like to say that your channel is brilliant. And you are a real gentleman and you have no end of respect for the living and the Dead. Thank you my good friend Thank you so very much and we look forward to watching many more of your programmes online. Once again thank you and God bless you my good friend.
Just before I emigrated to New Zealand I went to say goodbye to my departed family. One was in the Old Church graveyard in West Bromwich in the west Midlands. Very close to the said grave there were a few oddly shaped graves shaped like bodies. One of them was someone who served with Horacio Nelson. These strange looking graves maybe of interest to both yourself and your viewers. I regularly watch your utube videos and find most of them very interesting. From Sylvia aston in auckland, New zealand
Im a member of the norfolk titanic society and weve had discussions about this and as ive said, I know he died by suicide but to give him a porpoise grave is disgusting. Such a shame he is remembered and famous because of this. As he said if he'd of had some binoculars he would have been able to have seen it sooner. Rip Frederick
Love this video. Had a strong connection with the titanic so was so pleased to see this video. I'm not far from you in chichester so was lovely to see a local one. Everyone on that ship deserves the upmost respect and you gave that. If possible, would love to see you do a video on my comedy hero rik mayall. The only celebrity I ever cried about. Stay safe on your adventures. Xx
So Sad.. Look for David Hunter from crossroads Buried Henley Rd Crem Reading, oh and Arthur Dailey/Gerry Anderson Cremated there too.. great uploads of the forgotten few. some little nuggets.
You have a real talent for this Paul, thank you for doing this it is really illuminating and love the respectful way you go about the visits and narrative. Well done.
I had the honour of seeing all the Titanic graves in 2007 when i was in Halifax Nova Scotia in Canada. The 1st cemetery had a few graves from Titanic, and the second cemetery i visited had a whole section dedicated to the rest of the graves. It was a surreal experience even down to seeing a grave for J Dawson. Apparently all the dead were taken to Halifax and buried there, and the survivors were taken to New York. There is a Maritime museum in Halifax which i visited where there were so many recovered items from Titanic on display. A female child's shoe was on display which stayed in my mind. A very moving experience. I was unaware of this grave until watching this....Apparently there are graves in the Uk too..
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO PAUL I NEVER HEARD THIS STORY BEFORE NOW BECAUSE OF YOUR STORY ABOUT FREDRICK FLEET HE WONT BE FORGOTTEN SO WELL DONE R I P FREDRICK 🥀
Hi Paul. Very interesting. Have you been to Violet Jessop's grave in Suffolk? You may know she worked on the Titanic, Olympic and Britannic. Greetings from Ireland.
Poor ,Frederick Fleet . Yes.. A humble guy made famous by the sinking of the Rms Titanic . In 1965 after losing his loving wife & the thought of losing his home...why ?? Because his brother in-law wanted him out due to not being able to pay his rent. This poor old guy, goes out into the garden and hangs himself from a washing line. Words cannot express sadness /sorrow of this poor soul. Q...Did you know ?,after the Rms Titanic slipped beneath the waves The White star line ..Stopped all the crew's pay from that moment. Rip,Fred .
I sat in a physical seance some years back when a crew member of the Titanic came through. A watchman Archie Jewel. He survived the Titanic but lost his life aged 28 in another shipwreck
I went to a titanic exhibition in Orlando florida, and they had a big wall of ice, we was asked to put both hands on it, to see how long we could keep our hand on it, I think I lasted just over 35 seconds before I had to take my hands off, the guide said, you imagine being in that water, at that temperature, give or take, can't even begin to imagine.
Hey Paul I've just subscribed to your channel and going through all your videos that I can find, finding them all very interesting keep up the good work ❤❤
Hiya Paul, my three times great uncle (don't know his name) worked on the Titanic, Uncle X worked for a contractor company based in Carlisle called Cowan and Sheldon, and they got the contract to build the Titanic, Uncle X worked on the Titanic in Glasgow shipyard rather than the Belfast (Harland and Wolff)shipyard, Uncle X (and his contractors) also went to Argentina to build there Railway lines in the late 19th century, just a short story for you Paul, I hope you find interesting, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
I didn’t think titanic was ever built in Glasgow. Can you post a link to an article that says it was built in Scotland. As far as I am aware it was made in Ireland.
Paul. ! I no if you noticed but it sounded like a mans voice at 7.41 saying something, couldnt make it out. Anyway another good one really interesting as usual, yea what a sad end for him he must have been in a bad place to do that, maybe it was witnessing all those people drowning and freezing to death. !!
Could you find Officer Lightower grave. They did have binoculars but that had been locked in a cupboard and the other officer went off shift with the keys.
Such a sad ending for such a wonderful man glad he has an head stone that commemorates him hope he's resting in peace and they did have bencoulars that were inside a locked cabinet that a officer who wasent needed and was sent off the ship when she was docked in sherborge France and he axodently took the key with him in his case
A great video Paul. Glad Mr Frederick Fleet has a grave stone. Could I ask if you could find the grave stones for Pat Roach & Gary Holton who played Bomber & Wayne in Auf Wiedersehen Pet Tv Series. Also the grave of the singer -Lena Zavaroni.
