Great video - this is the perfect detail for cord cutters! Do android TV boxes update their version of android? I have a Minix U1 running 5.1.1 - will it ever update to 7?
Xiaomi customers reported lots of issues upgrading the MiBox 3 to Oreo during last few weeks, but, I didn't have too hard of a time. I am running the Beta version of Live Channels 1.17.4 which is great! No weak signals or recording problems. The beta is due to be released to public any time. I prefer this linear guide to the Slice guide HDHomerun uses with are both free. I subscribe to the DVR service which adds a Cube style guide to the HDHomerun app. I love Silicon Dust's DVR, but, for users who are absolutely not going to incur a monthly fee to record, Live Channels is great free "entry level" DVR app! Thanks for the review.
Holy crap, this is EXACTLY what I've been needing for at least a year now. It even works with my old HDHomeRun, which means I don't have to buy anything new! I'm like you Lon in that I was a MediaCenter user. I originally was getting the Clear QAM from Comcast using my HDHomeRun connected to MediaCenter in the bedroom, and streaming to my Xbox360 in the living room. Worked great. Then when Comcast stopped the Clear QAM I switched over to an Antenna. Then MediaCenter went away when I went to Windows 10, and I was basically stuck with the antenna direct to the TV. From perfect solution to crap solution in 2 Company decisions. I've been trying to determine how I can still do Antenna DVR without having to buy new equipment, and still be able to watch it in the living room. Much of the newer DVR solutions that even work with HDHomeRun require one of their newer models. That includes their own DVR software. With one video, you have gotten me back to near ideal simply by me plugging my device back in. I even have the 500GB Shield, so I don't have to hook up additional storage. This is a good day. :-)
Hey Lon, love the videos. If I have an OTA antenna, a HDHomerun, and a Nvidia Shield - will I be able to use the Shield to record the OTA broadcast? Or will a NAS/Computer be required to make the HDHomerun work? Thanks!
Lon.TV that is one very impressive museum for the back drop. It was great to see the little Newton again (I helped with beta testing it many moons ago)
If I can't turn it on, select a language, enter a password, and go, no thank you. It's way too complicated for this old lady! Great information though. I learned that I don't want one. You saved me money and probably lots of frustration. Once again you have saved the day, Lon. Thanks!
Lon. Thanks for this got this update yesterday on my shield and said WHAT! Tried it out last night but was not sure were the recording was going, thanks for the information.
Holy crap, an iPod 3rd generation on the shelf back there. Loved the 3rd gen ipod. Those red glowing buttons. I wish it wasn't firewire recharging and supported USB power charging.

Lon, this looks great! I have a 16gb Shield, WD My Cloud NAS and HDHR Connect already. Do you recommend the HDHR DVR software over Live Channels since it could utilize my NAS as opposed to needing a hard drive adoptable storage?
interesting video! I'm on OTA and still using older Philips DVRs hooked up to each of my TVs. They work pretty good but downside is I cant watch recording on another TV in other room.
Good afternoon Lon! Thanks for this information. I have a question regarding adding an external drive (USB key) to the Mi Box and add it as “adoptable storage”. Now let’s just say I have some recordings and at some point I want to delete them because I watched them and Need to create space.. is it possible?
Lon, I have 3 televisions in my home can every tv watch a different channel while using homerun prime along with nvidia shileds etc or does everyone have to watch the same show ???
Lon, you have great videos. Hope you can find a workaround for the double entries in the Android tv guide//Also will Skystream 3 plus be a good android tv box to use with Channels Plus DVR??
Having problem with android live channels. The catagory sidebar to the left of the guide will not auto hide. Seems to be locked in place. Nvida shield 6.3 input ota from hdhomerun
Please help as I am tangled up in the cord cutting mire. OK, so I have an HD homerun connect, a android box, a computer and a setv account. My wife and watch shows we have recorded on our DVR through Directv. I am trying to cut the cord, but still have the same functionality: record and watch my shows with an easy to user interface (like setv). I don't really care about live tv as the only live program we watch is football and I get that on setv. Please help
Hi Lon.TV, I am trying to cut the cable, and your videos has helped me a lot. I just need to confirm which HDHomerun TV turner is compatible with the MECOOL M8S PRO L I am going to buy. I had two Android TV Box, and I returned back for issues. Thank you very much for your time!
On the left are options of Recent, and various categories,... How many recordings can remain in Recent, and, what happens to older recordings as newer ones fill in Recent category?
Up to seeing this I was considering a system on a Roku platform with Tablo. Two negatives to that are the subscription for guide data and slow response time of table. Especially with live tv. This system seems pretty responsive. I know it is rudimentary now, but I would expect it would improve with subsequent updates. Will the Hdhomerun Connect work well with this as long as the connection is ethernet?
Thanks for the videos. I got my hdhomerun working, but bought standard Nvidia Shield and it wouldn't recognize a 4TB drive so I got a 2TB drive and it formatted but only shows 160GB! ? Please Help! I've been battling this for days
My shield keeps loosing the programmed recordings. It’s brand new and I extended memory with a large premium recommended usb drive. There is no support out there with Live Channels app, sadly.
lon, help me out here. I have a Nexus player external hard drive 1tb, hdhr. and have live channels and I formatted the drive. but I go back to live channels and it says I still need more storage. do I have to pay for hdhr DVR too? can you do a video for the Nexus player? or guide me in the right direction. do I have to move the apps to the external drive? and can you do a video on hdhr DVR beta and how it works with multiple Nexus players
Lon, Have you heard about any resolution for the passthrough audio issues with this setup? The DVR i useless to those without a soundbar it appears using an nvidia shield which would seem to me to be one of the primary use cases, but maybe not? Refer to this link i receive the message 'Cannot play audio. Please try another TV.' Yet when i just play live channels from the hdhomerun channels video and audio both play fine: forums.geforce.com/default/topic/994786/shield-tv/lack-of-ac3-audio-codec-impacting-new-live-channels-update/ Maybe something to ask about for us that don't have cash for fancy sound setups currently...
I didn't know that the shield could record, has a built in DVR? What do you do if you have more than 1 TV? Do you all only have one TV in your house? I had 2 TVs when I lived in an apartment and both TVs could view cable.
Lon, Please correct me if I'm wrong. Did you say that the android tv now has the ability to record several channels while watching a different channel? If you didn't, will it? Thank you.
Is the DVR option only available in the US? I'm in Canada and can't find anyway to activate it. I have the Nvidia Shield 16gb version and have a 128gb SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 Flash Drive installed as internal storage. I have the new HDHomeRun Connect Quatro hooked up fine and running. I can watch live tv just fine on the HDHomeRun app and on the Live Channels app, but the option to get DVR is no where to be found. In settings under Channel Sources there is only the HDHomeRun Input, which I've set up, (and the Google Play Movies & TV) but the Network TV Tuner (BETA) option is not there. I've looked all over the internet and can't find any help. I believe that the minimum storage size is 50gb so the 128gb I have should be enough, unless there are other storage requirements that I'm not aware of. The only thing I can think of is that this is a US based feature only, but I can't confirm that anywhere. Any help with this would be appreciated!
Thanks for the quick reply!! I've looked a bit though the forums but didn't come across anything that would help. I'll keep looking and see if I can find anything.
Hi Lon, Love your videos. I'm hoping you can clear something up which I can't find online. Can you watch a recorded show from the beginning while it is being recorded. I know this option is available on the HDHomerun DVR app / subscription, but am wondering if it is available within the live Channels app.
Oh. I missed that. Sorry. I am building this with the wife in mind. It works best for her if the experience is the same regardless of the TV she is going to . The Tivo Bolt system with minis does this well. It is just weak with the available streaming apps. In particular the lack of PS Vue, Sling TV, Directv NOW.
I have a mi box. I just updated the software and it's not working. I go to channel services and the beta version doesn't show up. I'm on version 1.13.011. Any help?
I have a question does this device need to be hardwired through an ethernet cable to be on your network or can it be connected to your network via WiFi.
the hdhome run prime live recording is horrible, I'm getting tons of distorted unwatchable videos, I've searched and search and wasn't able to resolve this issue.
Hi Lon. Can you do channel zapping on this app with a keyboard or remote? I have hundreds of free ota channels via a sattelite card and usually input the channel number on my remote. This interface looks insane with all the scrolling!
Hey Lon. In my attempts to make it easy for my wife to watch live TV (not with Plex) I am trying to get my Shield to work. I get a picture and guide and channel changing just fine but no audio. I've checked me sound settings but I can't see where I'm goig wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.
Update. Turns out the HD Homerun channels have audio but not the Network Tuner (Beta) does not. So in the end, I have live channels with audio, I just need to update the HD tuner to include the DRM channels. Thanks for your help Lon.
Why does Live Channels DVR need your external drive to be "adoptable" (internal/linked to the hardware) storage? The HDHomerun "HD" app records to an external drive and can share shows across the network (and of course you can see the files and remove/plug in the drive at will). I like the Live Channels Guide better but it's gimped as a DVR because of this.
I was just using the onboard storage. More for placeshifting then anything. I just recently got the HDHomerun (had a ceton infinitv) so I'm not used to how it should perform wireless.
Live channels does not work with my setup unfortunately some some audio code is messed up with it so all I hear is a weird god awful static noise. It is HD though, wish they would fix it!
Unable to open "Live Channels" app. It doesnt even give me an option to open ...only uninstall, full description, and flag as inappropriate. Please help
Lon, do you know if SiliconDust will release a similar version for the FireTV ecosystem? I don't have Echo but think about this: "Alexa, tune to NBA TV!" :)
I just get 'weak signal' on every channel, and no EPG data -- which is strange because the hdhomerun DVR beta app works fine (although a bit crashy). I'm in the UK using a shield TV + hdhomerun connect .
I keep getting weak signal no matter what tuner I put it on. The live channels app on the shield hasn't worked for me since the app was updated. Any ideas?
Reading around, I think it's just US only at the moment. My only hope is they enable UK DVB-T2 in the next update. Until then I'm using AuroraTv. Only problem with that is the lack of series record. Nice app otherwise.
Lon.TV I think technically you're not supposed to upgrade the hard drive inside an Xbox but people do it. So I was just wondering if it was possible, not that it was offically "allowed" by Nvidia
Lon.TV I think we found the same source at the same time. I was in middle of doing research on it. Sounds like I just gave you a future project/video idea for your next video. You better get out your ifixit toolkit and get started. I'll be patiently waiting for that upgrade. Is there any plans for you to get your own petabyte like the guys over at Linus Tech tips? I'd love to see your review on it.

Gary Norman Just the HDhomerun family of products... Connect, Extend, Prime. Seriously though HDhomerun owns the Tuner market and are compatible with all software
Any chance they sprinkled some magic Google pixie dust on the update that allows it to use the older HDHR3-US tuners? (He asked, hoping to save a hundred bucks.) Thought I saw mention in a forum that Nougat added the mpeg2 license or something. Or is it a matter of older tuner lacking DLNA?
