If anyone is watching this 2 years later, it is definitely still worth it. Nvidia has been so good about updates. I'm using the 2017 model. As far as I know, the 2015 model still gets updates. Who else updates something for 8 years?

Thanks for doing this video. I've never actually seem one of these in action so it's a real help! I ended up buying a small Lenovo PC (M93P Tiny) which I installed Batocera on, and it's a treat! For me it's better than the Shield as it can run GameCube no problem. Only caveat is setting your emulation to run at 720p. 1080p is just too much for it sadly, but at 720p it's absolutely awesome, and for the price I paid (£100 with a 250gb Samsung SSD) a complete bargain. Now, back to F-Zero GX!

There’s several important emulators that don’t have a 32bit version which to me is far more important than the onboard storage or ports of the smaller shield
@IM0001
@IM0001 2 года назад
Another bit that may be important for emulation on the Shield TV vs the Shield TV Pro, is the Shield TV (Tube) is only 32bit Android where the Shield TV Pro (And all past Shield TV/PRO's from 2015/2017) are 64Bit Android. And the only Shield TV That has a onboard HDD is the original Shield TV Pro from 2015. However the best thing to do with that model is to replace the onboard 500G HDD with a 500G SSD which greatly improves performance and completely fixes any slowdown that often seemed to happen with the original Pro. Updates that used to take over an hour now take minutes with the SSD, and overall it continues to be an absolutely fantastic TV Box that my family uses daily.

I originally got an nVidia Shield TV for the purpose of playing videos & music from my PC over the KODI app, which allows access to shared folders off of your PC through the network. KODI is probably the best app on an nVidia Shield for playing your own media & also has it's own emulator plugins, so I play most older emulators through the KODI app by accessing them from shared directories from my PC. Not all ROMs will work flawlessly with KODI, but the majority that I've tried work without any problems at all. Additionally, you can use bluetooth gamepads, which works with very little response latency if you are playing realtime games on the nVidia Shield itself, however it's better to use an input device connected to the PC itself if you are streaming from the PC to the Shield (as I've found with the Steam Link app); an additional note regarding the Steam Link app is that if you are using a keyboard/mouse that is connected to the PC (like a bluetooth or wired keyboard/mouse) rather than connected through the nVidia Shield TV, it not only reduces (or eliminates) input lag, it even allows you to FULLY remote access your PC through the Shield (some keys on the keyboard will function differently when connected to the Shield & not allow full PC functionality if not connected directly to the PC). So it's not technically necessary to have the games on the device itself, provided you are using an app that has network functionality (like KODI), nor is it necessary to attach a USB drive or insert an SDMicro card to use those games on the Shield, even transferring through the network is possible with other downloadable apps (like Network Browser) if you simply need to transfer the game to the Shield prior to using it (as I've found is the case in KODI when you are attempting to mount disc images, not being able to mount them in ISO format).

@STR82DVD
@STR82DVD 2 года назад
I've not really seen the Shield Pro upscale emulators natively however you can of course upscale your game content via the emulator itself relatively easily. I've upscaled game streaming but that's because the shield interprets the game streaming as a video. I suspect there must be a way to hook into the Shield AI upscaling API and away we go with rocking upscaling on the Shield. I'll look into it.

I mostly got it because it was capable of playing back all my really high quality media, which the Raspberry Pi Kodi setup I had been using up till then just couldn't. @@RetroGameCorps I think its sad there isn't any competition in this market (high-end AndroidTV Boxes), so Nvidia have really been dragging their heels in either the performance or the price (or both). I feel like the Shield TV Pro should be a solid USD $99 price since ages ago (max 2019 ?). What do you think? Here is my reasoning: Because at the $200 price-point you could get a Used, Refurbished, or even New Console. Such as the Xbox One S, or even the Xbox One X. Both pretty competent consoles compared to the Shield TV, and they support all the same Streaming Apps. And if you use Dev-Mode, you can use RetroArch on these and the performance is slightly better than the Nvidia ShieldTV Pro. Two limitations, first no Android Apps/sideloading. Second being that it will require a weekend to tweak everything so that it is setup, and you can get Dev-Mode sometimes free, other times from Discord channels, or might have to pay a little bit of money, but it seems worth it. Again, you can pick up these consoles for very cheap, and lots and lots of games also cheap, whilst it doubles as a Media Box. So instead of an Nvidia ShieldTV, it seems more "value for money" to recommend an Xbox One S or Xbox One X. Also a PS4 or PS4 Pro seem great, competing for the space in your TV Cabinet, albeit not quiet as "direct competitors". The real value proposition is the Xbox series S. At only USD $300, it's got more hardware than any PC you can buy for the same price. With the new Browser, and Dev-Mode, it is shockingly flexible. Not to mention it supports Xbox, 360, and One games superbly. It's also an emulation power-house. All of that for just a $100 more is a no-brainer. Skip the Nvidia Shield, grab the Xbox S-S instead, and have ability to play all new AAA-games for the next 5 years. And its a Media Box too. Really the Shield is poor value for money in comparison. If the top-end ShieldTV Pro was RRP priced at only USD $99, then there would be an argument to be made. That's my opinion, what do you think?
@valentineli305
@valentineli305 2 года назад
@@ekinteko Xbox Series S is not gonna be able to play AAA games for 5 years, at least not with the same content as X. Games have to be trimmed and downgraded to fit on S. A newer version of S will be out in a year or two. The rest is pretty true.
@ekinteko
@ekinteko 2 года назад
@@valentineli305 Well, that's not true. The Xbox Series S, has enough SSD, RAM, and CPU performance to power the same AAA-Games as the PS5 and XSX. The main difference is the big (x3) difference in GPU hardware. And that is fine. Games can scale things like resolution fairly easily. And that makes sense for their strategy (replace/phase out Xbox One/S/X out as fast as possible). The XSX has been designed as a 2160p/60fps machine for most of its lifecycle and games. Which is minimum until 2025, but more likely to be relevant until 2030. The XSS will be similar, but actually a little better performance. The shield is absolutely worth the money. It's very flexible, you can do a lot of different types of things on it. I've had mine since 2018 and never worried about the gaming aspects of it. Mostly use it for plex, streaming, movies in general...... Decided to grab a controller and take it to the next level though so I'm about to unlock its gaming potential and steam link and all kinds of great stuff. I still haven't even done a home security system set up on it but I have investigated how to and it would be glorious if I chose to pull that trigger. The right software for that is already in the Play Store, it's up to me when I want to add a few cameras around my property and get that going. Being in a small town there's not a huge need to do that though but perhaps one day. I completely disagree with the devices you claim are its main competition. It stands alone in it's category and doesn't really have good competition. All of those alternative devices are cheap Chinese boxes that are junk. Not officially supported, don't get updates, not nearly reliable long-term like The Shield is.

You forgot the two other reasons why the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the best when it comes to Android TV Boxes. Exclusive optimized GFN support and the AI video upscaler. That is what gives us the very best 4K video support on this thing for common video streaming apps. I just wish Nvidia had included a video app that could use it for local videos. @@YAHWEHBENEVOLENCIA the Shield TV Pro is still a great android tv box and will handle all of those legacy consoles and ROMs fantastically. You will want the PRO version, as it has USB ports necessary for additional storage. Now, it's worth noting that your list of intended consoles to emulate do NOT require much power, so even cheaper options may do fine for your uses. And there are of course newer similar android tv boxes that can also function this way. I still really like my Shield TV Pro. @gvanderlee2703 2 года назад
@@ChrisHaupt I think it's a missed opportunity. Emulation maybe was a niche, but since the start of retropie the retro gaming scene has really exploded. If you want a media box, for most people a cheap android box with netflix license will do, such as the Amazon sticks or the Xiaomi mi box. The added value of the shield for me is its gaming capabilities, which I think should be upgraded over time. Also from a business point of view, Nvidia should convince their customers at some point that it's time to upgrade. If you bought a shield in 2015, you still have no need for a new shield. I just don't get it.

I have my old home movies on a usb thumb drive attached for easy viewing as well. I honestly use it more for video playback than gaming but it is a great value especially since it comes with a dedicated gaming controller that feels comfortable and constantly gets updates from NVIDIA to optimize the experience. Unlike Android phones that lose support after a few years, this device remains viable. It doesn't get yearly hardware revisions so you can feel comfortable that it will last you a good while too.
