Thanks so much for this video…we are hoping to come to the Black Hills this summer (2023)!! We are hoping to find a place to boon-dock as well as we prefer that over campgrounds! Thanks again!

Awesome thanks for all this info I didn't know that there where two trail heads that close to Sheridan lake my mom's boyfriend works there. I will definitely have to talk to him more about this area. I've been wanting to go camping and explore some of the trails up there on my dual sport

Very awesome video. I'm looking for some advice if you or anyone that sees this comment is nice enough to give. I'm planning a gold panning/camping trip this year. My main questions are what time of the year should I go and what place is the most accessible by stock 4 wheel drive truck that I can basically drive right up to and camp/pan right of my truck.

Thank You for posting this. It is very informative. I live in Brookings and am headed out there in the next couple of weeks. I don't have a ATV, I just want to boondock somewhere that is peaceful and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! It is a little early I know, but I have cabin fever and will make it work. Do you know of a place where I can get a map of all the "dispersed camping" areas?

There are no specified areas for dispersed camping, but there are areas that are popular and some even have rudimentary facilities. If you are not riding, one of the best areas is around the Wrinkled Rock Climbing Area behind Mt. Rushmore (there are only non-motorized trails in that area. Hello I came across your video. My mom and her husband lives in Hot Springs. Im coming this end of the month. I am a female and will have my 12 Lbs dog with me. I am looking for somewhere safe to tent camp that will be close to hiking trails.

You don't say what kind of trails you like to hike. The Mickelson Trail is the most popular, followed closely by the Centennial Trail. The Black Elk Wilderness has many looping trails, but there is no free camping there. You could stay at one of several USFS campground (Willo Creek, Horsethief Lake or Grizzley) which are close. Alternatively you could stay at Iron Creek Campground in Custer State Park which in my opinion is the best place. There is disbursed camping near the Centennial trail near Dalton Lake and just west of Nemo, if that's to your liking. You should be safe just about anywhere in the Black Hills. I'm not aware of any recent reports of any problems involving campers.

Lionsprings - I want very nice scenery of lake and mountain to hike to. I’ll be staying in Hot Springs where my Mom lives. So the closest maybe Custer. Thanks so much

Hi there. Im back to SD again. It’s December and I’d like to solo winter camp. Which trail do you recommend for me? Something like a short trail for hiking. also somewhere that there isnt a mountain lion. I want to experience winter disperse camping in a camp ground so I wont be too far from my car incase of emergency. I will be using tent for camping.

You mention that there is a couple of trail systems close to Comanche Park in the southern hills. Can we ride to those or would we need to trailer? I have a ranger 1000 that I transport in my toy hauler so I can't trailer. Are the trails easy, mod or hard? Thanks in advance for your videos and guidance.

Thanks for asking. I've had several emails about this video with questions similar to yours. (JM from Iowa asked if there are any dispersed camping areas I would recommend for those who are not riding off-road.) and (Pe**798 wants to know if there are any dispersed camping sites with any facilities.) So here goes. 1. A trail permit is only required if you camp near a numbered permit-only trail, for instance, a four-numbered Jeep trail. If you camp near a country road or a road open to all vehicles without a trail permit, you can camp there without a permit. An example of that is the area I mention in the video along Calumet Road. 2. If you do not plan to ride an ATV/UTV, bike, etc. there is a very popular dispersed camping area behind Mt. Rushmore called the Wrinkled Rock Climbing Area. It can be busy in summer, however. There is a vault toilet there but no other facilities. Here is a link to it on Google: www.google.com/maps/place/Wrinkled+Rock+Climbers+Trailhead/@43.8864345,-103.4726357,14.75z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x87b335505fc310a7!8m2!3d43.8871748!4d-103.4698262 also freecampsites.net/#!(43.64213,+-103.78013) lists some free Black Hills camp sites, but by no means, all of them.
