Where to ride off-road vehicles in the Badlands of South Dakota. Shows where to go, where to park, where to camp and where to ride your off-road stuff. How to plan. What to expect. Tips from a local rider. (ERROR: The Road out of Scenic goes West, not East, as stated in the video. )

Great video. Just a little bit of misinformation. The area is not BLM land. It is USFS Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. And the dark Green on the map is not the reservation. It is Badlands National Park. The portion to the South of Scenic is the Stronghold Unit. It falls within the reservation.

Awesome info! Always great to be prepared when planning a ride! Great video! Always wanted to return to the Badlands! Haven't been there since I was a kid! Stunning! Cheers from a couple goofballs up in Alaska!

Always enjoyed this area! The creek is fun to rockhound in but I believe it was recently designated and protected just a few years ago. There is an antique car in a gully wash area there we found and plenty of cool areas to explore on foot. Gotta watch the deep mud buildup on the far bank at that first crossing after a flood, it can look dry but be 2 plus feet of gumbo, enough to stop a dirt bike and toss the rider from personal experience.....

I always recommend that you don't ride in the Badlands unless there has been at least a week of dry weather or the ground is solidly frozen.. Also, if you do pick up gumbo, wash it off your vehicle as soon as you can as it gets like concrete when it dry. Some creek crossings have soft sand bottoms so never stop once committed because you may sink in. Best to travel in groups so there's someone to pull you out if you get in trouble.

@brian egeberg can you confirm if this offroad section presented in the video is now closed. I would appreciate any information before I travel there. Thanks.

Like your vids. Im going to black hills national park in october with some friends. I am having a really dificult time planning a route. The goal it to plan a 4x4 truck route and make camp along the way. Anyways having a hard time planning route is there anywhere that they list classifications or difficultys trail descriptions ect... any info would be greatly appreciated. One of our first big trips and we are new to planning a route.

You can get started by looking at the BHNF Motor Vehicle Use Maps (www.fs.usda.gov/detail/blackhills/maps-pubs/?cid=FSEPRD533421) which will show you which trails are open to vehicles wider than 62 inches (Jeeps, pickups, etc.) ... these maps also show the various dispersed camping area. There is no trail rating system in the Black Hills but most roads and trails open to 4x4s (except for some specific rock crawling routes) are fairly easy. As for specific routes, that is mostly up to you and will depend on where you choose to stay and I'm afraid I can't help you there. Regards, Dean
