Free was one of those one off times when a group of supremely talented musicians found themselves together in the same band. Rodgers the best rock/blues voice you will ever hear. Kossoff best vibrato and so much feeling in every note. Fraser a virtuoso bass player. Kirke holding it all together very underrated drums. Hard to comprehend a band being so good so young.
You listen to Free compared to Bad Company it's a completely different Band . . became more commercialized later on . Free you hear the Raw Blues Power of the Band .
Where have you been so long, dear people? I live in a small country Croatia, 62 years old, and have been listening to Free since childhood.. They are the one of the greatest bands in the world, still adore them 💗💗 Nice regards from Zagreb, Croatia 😆
Jadranka Belancic hi from the UK 👋🏻 I’ve been listening to this amazing group since I was 17yrs old and now I’m 68yrs and still loving them, they’re often copied but never bettered 🎵🎼🎸🎶✊🏼👍🏻
Such a beautiful song. At age 64, this band remind of those wonderful years of my childhood & youth. So many talented musicians made the miserable austerity of those initial post-war years, so happy 😀
Lyrics Child you're talking of freedom Painted on your garden wall It's not there at all Child you're talking of wisdom You say wisdom is a golden rule You ain't no fool But you don't know who it is Who calls you name In the light of the golden moon You don't know who it is who brought you here And chained up your heart So soon Child you're life is a fairytale And it's not the same And the clouds You're hiding behind In your misty mind have disappeared Like a sailor far from the shores of your dreams And far from the love of your home Sailor lost on your own misty seas And the chains on your heart, baby Might be my love Might be my love It's so confusing And you feel that you're loosing yourself But, there over the mountain You thought you'd never have to climb There's a road Reaching and stretching To the corner of your mind Like a river casts aside the dust And grows and grows as it flows The feeling deep inside of you Must break like a dam So set you free So set you free So set you free.
This music is haunting to me because I took to the music immediately as if I had heard this band before. It is the music I would of chosen had I chose to be a musician , it truly feels right with my soul. Beautiful lyrics and perfect sound for me.😘🦅✌️
I met Andy Fraser and Paul Kossoff at their respective gigs in Sunderland after Free had split. Andy had a maxi length tiger skin coat on! I shook hands with Paul, he had hands like a bricky, I couldn't believe how rough they were. Needless to say I got their autographs. I could have done with a camera, but no mobile phones in those days!
What an absolute gem this was..and they were barely into their 20s, Andy being 18 or 19. A fantastic band that should have pushed the Stones off their perch if they stuck around a bit longer.
A fantastic and moving convergence of talent and musicianship. The best rock and blues singer for sure. Never a bum note. Thanks for such a great song Free
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF FREE ,BEFORE THIS YEAR ,I THANK GOD ,IN MY OLD AGE I FOUND ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS I EVER HEARD ,LIKE LOOKING INTO THE WISHING WELL ,
I don’t know how old you are Barry, I’m 53 and have caught the Free bug too. I had heard and liked All Right Now, but never dug much deeper. Thank goodness a video for Mr. Big popped up and have been on a journey the last several months.
I'm right there with you Barry !! How did I miss these guys? Just discovered them and they are on another level of fantastic. This is their best song on this album imho. It SO reaches me emotionally !! Rodgers has such a great rock voice and Paul Kossoff 's playing is so soulful. Bad Company is good in its way, but Free is SO MUCH BETTER to me !!! Spent the last week on youtube listening to everything they did.
@@barryjones9056 Truth is you will spend many more years listening to Free over and over and over again and again. Even when you stray you will find the path back to Free.

Best ever voice in Rock.!!! All the Free band members have been heroes to me for 50 years - but this song is all about Paul Rodgers. Sure - Plant, Gillan & Mercury were pretty damn good - but the No1 spot is not even close! Just for the hell of it, here is the list of MY Top 12 Rock vocalists ever in reverse order - let me know if you disagree! 12 Roger Daltrey 11 Stevie Marriott 10 David Bowie 9 Freddie Mercury 8 Kelly Jones 7 Ian Anderson 6 Jack Bruce 5 Ian Gillan 4 Robert Plant 3 Chris Cornell 2 John Lennon 1 PAUL RODGERS This is ranked purely in order of their ability to MOVE you - not in terms of power or range or attack - but just in terms of the amount of shivers down the spine. I am sure no-one else would choose the exact same dozen - and definitely not in the same order - but for me these gents are the cream of the crop. Six sadly no longer with us, Paul and 5 others still going strong.
@@martinusgroninger1875 Brad was awesome - and on any given day could comfortably break into this list …… as could Scott Weiland. It tends to vary slightly, depending on what I’ve been listening to lately!
I was 13 when I first heard Free. My older brother bought Fire and Water shortly after it was released and it was rarely off the turntable. It was my intro to Blues- Rock and what a start. I had every album on vinyl by the time I was 17, I've still got them all and they still get played.
This was always my favourite song on the album. It shows off the amazing voice of Paul Rodgers (who was born about 35 miles from where I live) wonderfully. I remember as a youth putting studs in my jeans to copy Paul; not recommended, as they scratch your legs. Maybe he used a different type of stud!
Roger's farewell to Koss? Several songs have been said to be to Roger's sending a message to the errant guitarist but there is always a bit o doubt about this. Whatever, hell of a song from a brilliant album that I have recently rediscovered. Musically, how the hell did we get from here to the nadir we have reached now?
Not sure about Rodgers penning other songs as a message to Kossoff, but I believe "Child" was definitely one that Rodgers claimed to have especially written for Koss when he was failing in a bad way. It's in the Free biography, "Heavy Load." www.amazon.com/Free-Heavy-Second-David-Clayton/dp/0954216903
So much still to know and we know almost nothing. Beautiful song, those first two notes are just so full of tension and melancholy, Koss was right on the edge and liable to let go, and of course he eventually did, not waking up on a flight in USA. Friends of mine have done that, I have seen death engulf me but I pulled back, three times and somehow I am still here. Out there in the future you are trying to imagine who is writing this, but I am perhaps long gone. Does it matter at all?
mark Bateman was there at the beginning still there.'Still here after all these years. The pain does not leave all those great moments and all the things that could've been.Paul Kossoff's death on Mar.:19th. will haunt me forever.
Me, grown up in Switzerland Europe found out about Free in 1980 when I was 18...soon after Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hendrix etc followed....so, all in all we were 10 years behind but not so in the biker szene of Switzerland, there that sound was spoton for a real looooong time.
They really were tremendous,to be in there company Live was Marvellous,I first see them on a all nighter at the Lyceum In 1969, they were First on.There were some good bands on that night inc East of Eden, but Free had blown me away for the Rest of the entire night ??????
Bandit, it's good to look back at what we came from, but don't forget the bad. 60's had several of our leaders killed. The nat'l guard was killing students......domestic violence was something women had to put up with.....racism was openly accepted. No doubt some things were better, but some things were worse as well.
We all were privileged to grow up with the best music ever... I started listening to FREE at 17yrs old and I am still loving them at 68yrs they keep us forever young 🎶🎵
REAL 100% Rock N Roll at it`s best!!! The Lord only knows how much I hold dear to my heart THE FREE , Bad Company and Paul Rogers Solo Lp`s. This music will live on for many a year to come! We will never hear music like this again in our lifetime sad to say. Thank you Paul Rogers & your band mates for the true gift of music that you have given us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you guys are just discovering their magic. I have loved this band since 1992 when I took a cassette with my in my Walkman to the Indian Himalayas. We drove over the high passes from Ladakh to Manali with this music on the Land Rover stereo. All was great "travel" music!
Wow. This was way before my time, but the music is so deep and introspective. This Kossoff (only know him because of the RU-vid comments) really was incredible.
Now you need to look into all the great players that played the Early Gibson Les Paul's, especially the 1958/1959/1960 Les Paul burst's, and the history behind those guitars being traded and bought and sold between the greatest rock musicians of the era. Peter Green gave his Les Paul 1959 to Gary Moore who sold it when he was taken to court for the rights to one of his most beloved songs called Still Got The Blues, the guitar is now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica who bought it for over $500,000.00. One of Eric Claptons famous Les Paul's was sold to Bernie Marsden of the Original Whitesnake, now Gibson makes a $10,000.00 copy of that 1959 Les Paul, as well as many others owned and traded through the years. The history of thos guitars and Paul Kossoff's Les Paul guitars are part of music legend. digitally recorded albums today will never have that 8 track heaven in the day and these guys was king of it !!! heartbreaker album the production on that album is impeccable raw and alive kossof and rodgers !!! bliss pure soul !!!
somewhat simpler times back then, similar problems as today, but less distractions so emotions and thoughts were more focused. Today's kids minds are distracted by tweets and face book nonsense. Shallow conversations. Those of age (I am 63) born in 57 remember how we looked forward to meeting up with our friends. Did not idle chat every day. When we got together we did more, felt more. My opine
Ive loved Free too, since their 1st appearance, seen them about half a doz times , have everything they ever played on vinyl, tape, cd, video. Loved every single song, never been a song ive ever disliked I will always love free, Always
I know right? I'm still playing this and all their stuff on my old guitars, through old amps, and STILL am amazed by Rogers, Kossoff, Kirke, and of course, the fantastic Fraser. Kossoffs tone on this and playing is by far some of his best stuff.... God I feel frickin' old....
They were slightly before my time, but I discovered them properly in 1980 when I bought a copy of 'The Free Story' at the age of 14. For me no other band has measured up to them since that day, nearly thirty eight years ago. I feel old as well sometimes; though not quite old enough to have been able to see them play live, but at least we are still able to enjoy the recordings!
Great....last days of school. That shows my age (67) and was into Free too...something in the style and lyrics. They were apart from the rest or norm...
I too was a victim of U.S. msm growing up in the 70s , cause " All Right Now " saturated the air waves but the majority of their great , artistic music was ignored like mos bands . Classic Rock Radio never grew up and still over plays the same crap over and over cause its always been about short repetitive hits from queen & floyd , I'd be happy never to hear again .
Louis. Their a blues band. Check out. Don’t say that you love me. Those of us who have followed them from. Free, to Bad Co. The Firm and beyond, realise how special this band really was. It was a coming together of 4 talented, individuals, that together took them to the pinnacle of blues music in the 70s. In my opinion. Paul Rodgers, was, is and always will be, the best blues rock singer of all time. Kossoff the best blues, vibrato guitarist. Fraser the best bassist and Ralph’s just held them all together with the timing and tempo. He did the same for Bad Company. Such a shame we all got old. However their music lives on
